"I personally believe that masters degrees are the least cost-effective of the degrees, and PhDs are where it really pays off. If you can find a program that bypasses the masters degree program and goes straight to PhD, monetarily-speaking, it's a sounder decision. That won't stop business undergrads from getting their MBA's, but I think master's programs are a waste of money."

Actually, this is wrong. A masters takes 1 extra year to get and counts as 3 years experience. PHDs take 3+ and maybe count for five years experience. People have a real problem giving a PHD with no experience that much credit.

The delta in salary between someone with zero experience and 3 years experience is huge. The delta between someone with 3+ years and 5 years is not as big.

Furthermore, many companies will pay for you to get a masters, making the masters extremely cost-effective. If you stay in school to get the masters, taking more than 1 year to do it is foolish.

Getting the PHD right after bachelors IS a good idea, though, because that shit is fresh in your head.

And yes, masters is the new bachelors.

On the original topic, I think it is harder now.

skokiaan, could you elaborate? You're the first person to say that it's harder now. I'd like to hear the dissenting opinion.

meh

I've known people to take 4 years for their masters
and I've known people that got it in 1.5 years (they didn't have to do a thesis though)

I've been quoted from 1-1.5 years (typically online, but not necessarily; no thesis; business/humanities/social sciences) to five years (residential, thesis, biology and chem majors) for a Master's degree.

I got my Masters in a year at state and because NC State tutition is a fucking bargain, it will pay for itself in one year of work by the increase in my starting salary alone.

Did YOU get into Harvard?

those kids in Cambridge are still stupidly brilliant... the stupidly part comes to things they interact with in daily life that they don't particularly care about...

Nah, the grade inflation is way worse in the Ivy Leagues than it is here.
