I have NO problem with the Yankees spending their $$$ on players.

I have a HUGE problem with the Yankees asking for an additional $300M in bonds from the city to help out with their new "privately funded" Stadium after spending $400+M on players this offseason. Fuck the Steinbrenners. If you can't afford your stadium, tone down your fucking spending.

Maybe blame those who vote to approve the bonds?

[Edited on December 24, 2008 at 1:05 AM. Reason : Also curious as to how the finances for the new Mets stadium breaks down]

About equal in terms of city financed bonds... however, the Mets didn't go back and request an extra $300M... we'll see if it gets accepted... I can't imagine it will after the latest spending spree.

via Baseball Think Factory:
Quote :
"It's not surprising that people are crying "salary cap" right now, given the dollar amounts and the fact that the Yankees signed the top 2 biggest-name free agents (and #3 was signed by the Mets). But if you look at it, this offseason is really just an anomaly. The Yankees' 2009 payroll is still going to be lower than 2008. They just happen to have a phenomenal incentive (missing the playoffs) and opportunity (all those expiring contracts) at the same time that most teams are trying to cut back or are hesitant to make major commitments. It looks bad, but it's not part of some systematic problem."

this is bullshit. regardless of the Yankees' recent signings BASEBALL STILL NEEDS A SALARY CAP.

How are fans in the smaller markets supposed to support their teams knowing that they cannot compete for the the elite players in the free agent markets? One tier of the league then becomes a farm system for the other tier.

I don't blame the Yankees, I blame MLB and Selig for letting this shit get out of hand.

I agree there should be a salary cap in baseball, but as a Yankees fan I am happy they have whored themselfs out again and bought every good player out there. Until they change the system the smaller markets like Pittsburgh do not have a prayer of winning anything.

Haha, the Royals have an owner who is far richer than the Steinbrenners, but he just prefers padding his pockets further by keeping profits for himself rather than making an attempt at putting a competitive product on the field. If thei is bad baseball, explain to me the Marlins, Rays, Brewers, Dbacks, As, & Twins being competitive the last decade? Sounds like a lot of people on here need to get a better handle on baseball finances & history.

**From 1936-1964, the Yankees won 22 American League pennants. During a 29 year stretch, the Yankees were the AL representative in the World Series 76% of the time**

You're right, competitive balance used to be much better

Meanwhile, the NBA has a salary cap (& floor) and still has the least competitive balance of any of the major sports

Homer much?

The Brewers have hardly competitive until 2 years ago, not a decade, they were bottom dwellers. The Rays have had one good season. The Marlins win with young players and then basically give them away. The A's are the best example.

The point is when these teams develop great young talents they have to trade them away when their contracts are up because they cannot afford them ALA Giambi, Tejada, Ortiz, Johan, Penny, Burnett, Beckett, etc.

Are you seriously going to tell us that money doesn't matter when it comes to winning? With the current salaries, the Red Sox and Yankees will never have a losing season again unless they put a cap in place.

Homer? My team makes it to the playoffs once ever quarter century, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna cry about it.

My point is what evidence is there that a salary cap will increase competitive balance when some teams clearly show no interest in putting a competitive product out there to begin with (see: royals, pirates, nationals)?

Again, look at the balance in MLB before free agency & since, there is little question that free agency has led to more balance

Maybe we should have all the MLB owners consult you with how they are to run their teams since there certainly seems to be a set way you believe all teams must act and run a team?

i was screaming for a salary cap after sabathia got signed, but after reading some other forums and doing some research it became pretty clear that baseball doesn't need a salary cap, nor would a salary cap even work well in the first place. i don't feel like typing everything about why it wouldn't work, so this is a pretty good article to read if you're interested:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1345

it's from 2002, but i don't think any of what the guy says is irrelevant 6 years after the fact. and that's certainly not the only thing you can read on the topic either. but i do understand why people throw a fit whenever the yankees do stuff like this. and yes, it is easy to point to the teams that have won the world series every year since 2000 or the fact that so many different teams have made the playoffs in the last 8 years. although the rays and rockies have proven the last 2 years that a team can make it to the world series with a very small payroll, it is disheartening every year to see that the yankees already have a 90% chance of winning it all right out of the gates. but really all you can do is hope your team gets smarter and can enjoy some long term success eventually. the worst thing about the MLB is the draft. if anything should be fixed, it's the draft. but that's a whole other discussion.

Andy Pettitte and the Yankees agreed Monday to a one-year, $5.5 million contract that brings the left-hander back to New York.

Pettitte can make an additional $6.5 million on performance bonuses and bonuses based on time on the active roster.

I think every players contract should be performance based, and active time based....

^That would be awesome. And if I were a player I would probably do that. Give me the league minimum and pay me extra for every W, Sv, all-star app, etc. Just have to decide which stats are actually important to each position.

Alex Rodriguez will attempt to play this season with an injured right hip, hoping to avoid surgery and a four-month rehabilitation period.
