Just got of watching our print and this is fantastic. I can't believe The Reader got a nomination for Picture and Director over this. The fight between Necrobutcher and The Ram is fucking brutal. Rourke got the role of a lifetime handed to him. I would have loved to have seen Nicolas Cage star in this as originally intended.

Yeah, but at least Foley has a life outside the ring. I'm trying to think of a good example but it's different because if Ram had been a wrestler in the late 90s, like when I was following wrestling, he probably would be a millionaire and wouldn't have had such a shitty life.

This movie gave me a perspective on somebody like Terry Funk, I guess, even though I don't think he was as popular as Ram was supposed to be in the movie. Or any of the ECW guys like Sandman or Dreamer

I meant more along the lines of what's involved in removing thumbtacks from your body, but your point is well taken.

I have not seen it yet, but I don't agree with it being called the resurrection of Mickey Rourke. That great resurrection film was called Sin City.

it seems that every aronofsky film i've seen boils down to battling addictions

the ram loved the crowd so much nothing else mattered to him

So one of the guys who's on the first show in the movie, Paul E. Normous, died last week.

He was 33.

The ending was reminiscent of Thelma and Louise. So while it was very depressing (we can only assume Randy died) at least he went out the way he wanted, under his on terms, still wrestling with the entire crowd behind him.

wow

heart breaking

i mean, the closing 5 minutes are basically the best moment in any sports movie ever

and yes, i'm now on board the mickey rourke bandwagon

although the scenes with his daughter were kinda creepy to me, since he's now fucking the hell out of the actress

[Edited on January 25, 2009 at 11:45 PM. Reason : btw, casting nic cage would have ruined this movie, it would have been dreck with him in the role]

this is tangential to the thread

but there's always a celebrity angle at wrestlemania

last year it was floyd mayweather vs. big show

two years ago it was trump vs. mcmahon

the rumor right now is that this year's angle is a match between rourke and chris jericho

yep

fuck vince mcmahon

and in a way
fuck mickey rourke for going along with this

i may be off the oscar bandwagon now

if he wins and turns around and does wrestlemania, it will be on par with jamie foxx doing his ray impression for kanye west

That's exactly why it was so depressing. He didn't have anything left and the one person in the world who was willing to give him a chance was right there, but he went to wrestle because he just couldn't stop. He sacrificed everything he had physically, mentally and emotionally for the high of getting out in front of the crowd and wrestling.

Great movie. I knew it was going to be good...just didn't know what to expect.

Could they have gotten anybody to play that role even as close to as good as Rourke played it??

I was reading an article where Aronofsky was bitching about how you can't get funded unless you have a big name actor in your movie

i'm sure he's right - it seems when brad pitt left the fountain it devastated the project

"The Budget for The Wrestler was about $7 million, but the budget was a whopping $19 million when Nicolas Cage was attached to star. We’ve talked a little bit about this in our Toronto interview with Aronofsky, but he does say that “two days after we won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival [Nicolas Cage] sent a text saying that ‘The Ram was always Mickey, congratulations.’ He is real class.” … “I thought Nic could have done it, but I had worked so long working with Mickey that it was just the Ram in my head was Mickey.”"

Unfortunately, the element of Rourke's character that put him in the position he's in today and made him the perfect man to portray the Ram is also the element that's resulted in a match at WM.

The interesting part about this proposal is that Rourke can probably go just fine, especially with a good partner like Jericho (he certainly can't be any worse than Hogan or Honky Tonk), but I'm concerned about how the booking will treat him. Celebrities usually go over in their WM appearances, but with Vince's opinion of the film, I could see some real bullshit going down.

what would be so wrong with Iron Man 2? - the first one was decent, Downey Jr versus Mickey Rourke would be pretty cool. you have to have a little fun

i'm not familiar with the expendables

evan rachel wood looks way better as a blonde

the wrestling thing is stupid though - i guess aronofsky has not commented about it yet

as the dark knight snubbing showed us

its still commonly accepted that comic book movies are comic book movies, not movies featuring comic book storylines/characters

so yes, following up what may be an Oscar winning role with a comic book movie is along the lines of following up an oscar winning role with Stealth and/or a Kanye West song

or following up an oscar winning role with everything cuba gooding jr has been in since jerry maguire

imagine, if you will, if john travolta's first movie post-Pulp Fiction was Battlefield Earth

[Edited on January 28, 2009 at 12:49 AM. Reason : and you should check out the expendables, stallone is going to deliver (or embarass some talent)]

you still have to put in the work even on those things

if you take steroids and don't work out, you don't just magically sprout biceps like that

and again - he's 61, he sells his own brand of supplements

if i had stallone money, i'd be on HGH and steroids too

-------

and i'm so glad he's not doing wrestlemania...

haha

yeah, i liked the passion of the christ reference. i fell in love with marisa tomei after my cousin vinny. caught her on a leno rerun tonight. i love free-spirited women like that. but the movie, it's so tragically beautiful. i hate hyping up movies like this, but if i had to summarize my sentiments for this particular movie in one word, it would be: fuck

man i don't think i could watch it again for at least a couple months

shit, just the way he's always taking out the earpiece, that alone is enough to crush your heart for the guy - but add in the thumb scene, the last scene with his daughter, the confrontation with marissa tomei

man

the movie really has an amazing design to its decomposition of one man's life

and none of it is as over the top as requiem for a dream now seems

there's no "ass-to-ass" moment

its just a pitch perfect collapse
