Have you ever noticed it's only open on Veteran's Day??

^^ Is it like the Washington Monument, constructed from two different materials (or time wore some of it down while a war was going on or something?)

It was originally designed in 1920 as a memorial to alumni killed in World War I.
Three years after the end of the war the dedications and corner stone laying were held, and the first 10 ft. sections of Mt. Airy granite were added in 1924,1925 and 1926. However, the Great Depression caused fund-raising efforts to fall behind, and the tower could not be completed until 1937 with the aid of the federal WPA agency.

Still, at this time, the clock had not been installed in the tower. The student honor societies and the Class of '38 provided for the clock, while the Class of '39 gave the floodlights.

Finishing details were delayed during World War II, but with funds from students, alumni and foundations; the chimes, shrine room and memorial plaque were completed. It was dedicated November 11, 1949.

you do know marines are part of the navy right?

although this is not quite as true as it used to be navy commanders were promoted solely on merit, as a incompetent commander can cause your ship to sink while a army commander would be hard pressed to be so stupid as to march his off a cliff.

thus the navy tended to have more competent commanders than the army, historically speaking

currently, however technology diminishes the differences.

How about when compiling a list we go by rank then alphabetical order. All branches are equally important for their various specialties in my eyes. Each branch has its badass, each branch has its grunts.

yes, technically speaking

i wouldn't recommend trying to position yourself or make yourself out to be superior to anyone as a midshipman, though.

yeah, in any and all practical terms, regardless of how things fall out on paper.

I know I would fucking crush a midshipman for trying to pull any semblance of highness and/or mightyness over one of my Marines.

I cannot stand this idea entrenched in the Navy that officers are like royalty, and enlisted are second-class citizens. I've seen it over and over again with the Navy personnel I've worked with (and sometimes they've even directly said as much), and here I see the seeds of this bullshit weed starting to sprout again.

Allow me to stomp on it and grind it into the dirt before it grows:

In the Marine Corps, you can ask most any officer or enlisted Marine--there is no question who the boss is. As a Marine officer, I get treated with noticeably greater respect by enlisted Marines than do my Navy peers and their sailors (can't comment on Army or Air Force--I've worked with their officers, but never with their officers and enlisted together). This is in large part due to Marine officers generally having genuine respect and admiration for their Marines, and treating them with the respect, dignity, and care that they are due. I can't even guess how many times through OCS and TBS (another thing that officers of other services are shorted on, but I digress) it was hammered into us that troop welfare comes second to only one thing: mission accomplishment. Their needs and welfare always come before yours. Officers eat last, only after every subordinate has been taken care of.

The other part of the equation is that our officers aren't pampered through their training. We are expected to PT harder, sleep less, work longer, take the blame for shortcomings, give credit for the successes, etc. That's why you're paid the big bucks.

So, in short, (1) Hold yourself to a higher, harder standard, and (2) take care of your subordinates before you take care of yourself. Don't lose sight of who's in charge, and don't take any shit, but treat your men with the respect that they're due. They will return the favor.

Or do it the way most jackass fuckstick Ensigns do it, and get treated like a jackass fuckstick Ensign.

[Edited on November 29, 2008 at 10:55 PM. Reason : ^^ yeah, couple months back]

[Edited on November 29, 2008 at 11:00 PM. Reason : Apologies in advance for the good Navy officers who aren't like this. ]
