"Hell, the graduate school canceled a payment I made to them, then turned around and threatened to throw out my graduate school application for failure to pay. You know what happened? I had to pay the fee, again, plus a late payment penalty."

Tangent: When I lived on campus the rent and tuition were all on the same account. One semester the rent and tuition came up at about the same time. When I paid the tuition they applied it against the rent. Rent was paid in full and the tuition charge against my account was short by the amount of the rent.

By the time the rent check cleared to pay off the balance on the tuition charge it was like a day overdue - which caused them to cancel my registration. I had to re-register and I didn't get most of my classes/sections back.

---

I was going for 2 minors and I also tested to place out of about 12 hours of credits. I didn't learn about this policy until right at the very end. Luckily I graduated before the hammer came down.

ok so whats the deal, i have 157 "thp" and 150 "gpa hours"...15 from summer courses...have like 15 hours that counted toward my minor as well

i assume since 157-15=142-15=127 that i'm good?

yeah, part of my problem was that the English department (and like only two other CHASS departments) requires up through 202 of a foreign language

so I still needed to take 201 and 202 based on my placement test

if you want to avoid that surcharge, then instead of switching majors you should add your new major as a double major. Tracks give you a significant number of additional credits for an extra major, and you don't have to finish your original major.

I have a double major in business and engineering and I can have up to 199 credits before the surcharge, but luckily I will only have 185

Now that several of us had to stay in school for more than 4 years and pay tuition surcharges because we changed our major, ncsu is finally changing the undergraduate programs to make it easier for people to graduate in 4 years even if they change majors. It starts in summer 2009 I think. All the good things happen now that I graduate...

I don't know if its just a COE thing or what, but I've never had any problems with the administration, I've also never needed them so it helps.

How is this going to help you? They still count as hours.

"1.2. Credit hours to be excluded:

1.2.1. NCSU summer session courses

1.2.2. advanced placement credit through AP, CLEP, or credit by examination

1.2.3. NCSU off-campus extension courses"

when i went to my transcript i counted 6 E classes

looked on the transcript key and it say e were online classes which after looking at which courses had an 'e' next to them i swiftly realized those were most def online classes

therefore

when it says off campus extension classes i assume that would be an 'E' imo

plus i have 0 in my bill so dat must be co-rect

so like 15 for my minor which may or may not count, and 18 for my online classes which i'm pretty sure dont count...out of 157 "thp"

in conclusion

wtf

You can appeal the surcharge, according to the infinitely helpful wolfeee. Go talk to your adviser for advice.

^ you have to remember that alumni $$ goes to make new golf courses and such.

so i do graduate this may, and the reason i have so many hours is that COE does not allow electives (cause you student teach for a whole semester), so i didn't get to transfer a lot of courses from my previous major, psych. also, COE only lets you student teach in the spring (for my concentration) soooo i could have graduated in december BUT there was that pesky student teaching thing. which is 12 hours. and the 12 hours isn't even spent at NCSU. and those 12 hours put me over the top.
fuck you state

COE= College of Engineering

COE =/= College of Education

[Edited on December 10, 2008 at 9:24 AM. Reason : j/k I was confused for a minute because you were talking about required student teaching.]

I graduated with 183 hours and paid that surcharge for 3 semesters.
I did 5 semesters of engineering, switched out, then I double majored in Technology Education and Graphic Communication. Nothing mattered to them. I was paying that surcharge no matter what, and I fought it for a while.

sooo today i called R and R (in search of loopholes) and i was prepared to be like wtf is wrong with you, charging me all this money for ONE extra semester. but thennnn i got the nicest guy on the phone and he said that it is not an ncsu thing, it is a state legislature thing and ncsu doesn't really have wiggle room. so i asked him who i should send my strongly worded email to, and he said erskine bowles, which is too bad, because he is a pretty nice guy
/end story, sorry
