according to http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/783113-overview 80% of the population has HSV-1 (most commonly seen as cold sores), but only 30% of significant outbreaks

HSV-1 is transmitted through infected saliva and respiratory droplets...which means a dental dam won't do jack in preventing transmission of the virus

now, assuming that the 80% figure is correct, how many of you are going to admit that you have (or might have) herpes? the basic STD tests they do will show positive for the virus, but won't tell you which one it is (where HSV-2 is the primarily genital strain)

the simple fact of the matter is that if you're part of that 80%, you shouldn't give oral sex in the first place if you want to be safest (though kissing can still transmit the virus to your sigfig's mouth)

this may be ignorance on my part, but i think that, if you already have the particular strain (HSV-1/HSV-2), and you come into contact with the virus in another location (say you get cold sores on your mouth/lip and your partner goes down on you and you come into contact with the virus), you are most likely not develop an outbreak there, as outbreaks USUALLY occur at the source of infection
