I'd put Say It Ain't So and My Name is Jonas ahead of El Scorcho. But something by Weezer should probably be #1.

it's really a toss up between sebastian tellier's 'la ritournelle, Tom Petty's "mary jane's last dance" or "Pumps and a Bump" by MC hammer

Three of the best--all by U2:

"Vertigo" (just a great rock song)

"Beautiful Day" (and it is beautiful)

"Elevation" (uplifting )

U2 is disqualified on the grounds that I can name five U2 songs from the past 15 years that are better than those three

1. Your opinions are irrelevant.

2. Yet, you didn't name those five U2 songs that are allegedly better, did you, bandit?

3. STFU.

"Vertigo" is a great rock song. If you don't understand this, you simply don't understand songcraft in the rock genre.

NUMBER 1 RIGHT NOW IS Lady GaGa Featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance.

THEY ARE THE SAME LEVEL OF QUALITY AS U2 I GUESS.

BECAUSE CHART PERFORMANCE EQUALS QUALITY.

your favorite quote is from bono. you are a fanboy. the only songs you mentioned as the best in the past 15 years are by U2. there is no sense in arguing with you.

i'm pretty sure that the song that i'm currently writing, loosely titled "hooksaw is a redneck asshole," is better than your average chart topper by U2.

these are all good

I'd probably pick a different Mountain Goats song or a Radiohead song as the overall "best," but I'm way too indecisive for these kinds of threads

So, to be fair, I went back and looked at the U2 catalog.

I realized that hooksaw is right, and that there aren't five better U2 songs since 1993 than the ones he listed...because everything U2's released since 1991 is shit.

Joshua Tree is great for sure.

As far as contributing to this thread...Its too hard for me to compare bands like this across all genres. But if I limited myself to some of the general "rock" bands that I like and that are generally well known to choose from, off top of my head some of the nominees would be:

The Mars Volta - "Viscera Eyes"
Dismemberment Plan - "The City"
Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
Radiohead - "Let Down" or "No Surprises" if I had to pick one this instant
Weezer - "the good life"
Nirvana - "All Apologies"
Jimmy Eat World - "For Me This is Heaven"
.hopesfall. - "end of an era" (yea doesnt really deserve to be here in the grand scheme but its hugely important/influential for me personally)

After thinking for a good while, I think my answer would either be "Emily" or "Cosmia" by Joanna Newsom.

Oh, or "Vertigo" by U2. I mean, "Uno, dos, tres, catorce"?!? It's like Bob Dylan fucked William Butler Yeats and Alan Ginsberg at the same time and the lyrical genius that sprang from the union of their loins crafted the greatest song ever written, an unstoppable force so powerful that it blinded Bono when first he read it, scarring him forever, leaving him with the terrible curse of having to wear gigantic fucking sunglasses until the day he dies. Yeah, man. Vertigo.

i love this song (and the entire album). and i realize that it is better than milk-eyed mender. but in the same way that i listen to spank rock more than beethoven, i enjoy "inflammatory writ" more than i do "emily" (or anything off of ys). it's just more fun. and i like to try to imitate her ridiculous enunciations in that one.
