why would you use a beta os as your primary?

seems stable and it's apparently faster than xp or vista.

thinking about giving it a try for a week or so.

so how does this fit in with Vista? I realize this is really Vista 2.0, so is MS going to support both OS's or are they going to scratch Vista after 7 gets going for a while (similar to XP)?

I am. I usually format my computer about once every 6 months and it had been a while, so I gave it a shot. I don't see any downsides (yet) so I figure I'll keep it until it is time to format again. Hell, this beta is more stable and quicker than Vista. It actually makes me not hate this computer again.

^Because an expiration can be removed:

^^^^Wait, they scratched XP after Vista got going for a while? Like scratched its back and extended its life cycle? Maybe you meant Me vs. XP.

I'm sure they would support both, as Vista has been out for a while and 7 is probably a year out. Personally, I'm looking to leapfrog Vista, maybe even 7 depending on the reviews.

^ i don't think you're going to want to skip 7...by far, XP is better than vista, but win7 is vista minus the pre-SP1 crap, plus boatloads of improvement

i can't say i'm surprised that win7 is just vista SE...just pissed at m$ for not sticking to winfs and releasing vista as it should have been (though i understand that they determined the time gap between XP and a new OS to be too big to wait if they did it properly)

^^MS is going to stop supporting XP.... sorry, I didn't mean that XP is currently done for, but that's what MS has planned (at least they were planning this) to do in the near future

I think you're getting confused. MS isn't going to stop supporting XP, they're just trying to stop selling new copies.

They've promised to support it through at least 2014.

no they just REALLY want people to be forced into Vista when buying a new computer.

But support for XP will go on for a while.

I'll stick with the one that can be already cracked to work long term

when is microsoft going to figure out their taskbar needs to work like ultramon makes it work? i'm really getting annoyed by that little fact

That's a shame. I had to abandon Ultramon when it started causing some serious buggy behavior on my system. If my system went to the screen saver it would come back with the task bar at the top of the screen and the system would just lock up completely.

Too bad. Ultramon would have been awesome.

your only problem was with the screensaver? just don't use a screensaver or have the monitor turn off instead or something..

and is anybody else having weird problems on windows 7 when opening networked files in excel or word?? when i try to open something off the fileserver it hangs for 2-3 minutes then opens fine..but i can copy/paste it to my desktop in under a second and open it just fine from there (and i dare say it opens faster than in XP or vista...) works fine from every other OS with the same settings for everything i can find..

gah

Can't turn off the screen saver it's set by a group policy.

I've thought about writing a mouse wiggle app that shifts the mouse over by a pixel every 29:59 so it never goes to a screen saver.

k..earlier problem of slow file opening was fixed by turning windows firewall off.. d'oh.

more like that + adding the file server to trusted locations in excel.

now it's as fast as any other windows OS i've used

..still working on bluetooth mouse issue.

i'm gonna run it on my macbook pro w/ 4gigs of ram. should i try 32 or 64bit?

also i'll probably play with it in vmware fusion 2 first. which would be easier to virtualize?

I don't give a fuck about the media. I want my live account to be tied to a legitimate beta key.

^not trying to disrespect the post by any means, I'm actually using the link. I meant that all day I've just been trying to sign up for a key, I figured I would be grabbing the dvd from usenet anyway because of snail like transfer speeds from MS.

I was able to get to the final step earlier in the day. The URL actually consisted of "productkeys/x64/default.aspx" or something to that effect. Of course it error'd out before I was successful. I wonder if anyone got a key today?

i don't get this, this is THE biggest software company in the world and they can't get a freakin' product key distribution to work without their infrastructure being too busy. if anybody should have the infrastructure in place for this it's microsoft... i mean learn from Mozilla's mistake a couple months ago.

I really hate that it finally made it to slickdeals front page. I kept checking this morning thinking it was the reason for the busy servers.

I can't remark too much on this, other than to say the demand for this beta is retardedly higher than anyone expected. And it wouldn't matter what infrastructure was used, it wouldn't be able to meet the instant demand. I would very very highly recommend you guys just wait till Sunday or Monday to download / register. It's funny how angry people get when they are surprised that the entire world can't download the same thing at the same time without problems.

however given the huge amount of interest, I wouldn't be surprised if they just leave it open.
