update:

Quote :
"Despite forecasts for sub-freezing temperatures and numerous e-mails from concerned parents about safety concerns, organizers decided Wednesday to keep Campout outside on Lee Field.

...

"There are a bunch of rules for students who are going to attend Campout," Donnelly, senior in political science, said. "Volunteers will be checking campers as they come in to make sure they are properly layered and have all the necessary equipment with them."

Donnelly said students attending Campout must wear three layers of clothing and also bring other items, like hats, gloves and scarves, to keep warm.

...

If weather conditions make the Campout difficult for students to complete, Donnelly said there are plans to shut it down early and send students home.

"We have set plans in place if we need to shut Campout down early," she said. "It will be over at the point things start to go wrong. If we get to two checkpoints, that's where it ends nobody will be penalized." "

^ I would say that from the tone I am reading they are almost PLANNING on only have 2 checkouts, just not telling us that so maybe they can cut some numbers then get us out of there before it gets too bad

i agree.

i think thats a good idea anyways

it gives credit to the people that actually want to be out there but doesnt penalize and yet still takes in the safety aspect of it.

still should be fun

three layers though? wtf haha

haha, sweet

Good to hear that they will be keeping it outside, it should be a crazy campout.

Quote :
"...

Donnelly said students attending Campout must wear three layers of clothing and also bring other items, like hats, gloves and scarves, to keep warm.

Another addition to the Campout will be 13 heaters spread around Lee Field. Donnelly said students will have to remain at least three feet away from three of the heaters because of the high temperature they emit.

...

Donnelly said SG will provide hot chocolate for free until 11:15 p.m. and will be selling hot chocolate and pizza throughout the night. She also said there may be hot soup provided by University Dining.

If weather conditions make the Campout difficult for students to complete, Donnelly said there are plans to shut it down early and send students home.

"We have set plans in place if we need to shut Campout down early," she said. "It will be over at the point things start to go wrong. If we get to two checkpoints, that's where it ends nobody will be penalized."

Stafford said he is confident the plans put into place for Friday will make Campout a success.

"Based on all the plans Morgan and her team have put in place, I think it will go well," he said. "But it will definitely be cold. It's extremely important for everyone planning to camp to take all the precautions to stay safe.""

Just got an email

- Here are some tips for staying warm

o Avoid alcohol

o Use a sleeping pad to help insulate you from the ground

o Eat foods high in fat and calories to help keep you warm

o Warm drinks, stay hydrated to maintain good blood flow

o Know the signs of hypothermia and watch for them in yourself and others;

§ Mild: mild to moderate shivering - get warm, foods & fluids, more clothing

§ Severe: no longer shivering, fumbling, mumbling and stumbling - Seek medical attention immediately

We look forward to having you at Campout and sharing this tradition with you! If you have any further questions, please contact Morgan Donnelly at NCSUCAMPOUT2009@gmail.com.

Go Pack,

Bring a battery-powered space heater or something... Or chill in the Sullivan computer lab until near the time for tent-checking comes.

If anyone does choose to stop by the sullivan lab, drop me a PM or something and I'll drop downstairs to chill with ya.

I still have not received an email saying whether or not we were assigned a camp out spot. If it were not for this thread I would have absolutely no information about when the camp out starts. Even if we did not get a spot it seems like they should email me to inform me.

^^ I had the same problem as you.

I registered the same as i have the past 4 years. I didnt get an email, so i emailed the campout people, to which i got a response saying that i didnt register.

Adam Compton also said he could not add my group because it "was already set up" and there was nothing he could do.

This pisses me off. It was much easier and less error prone when we filled out and turned in the forms manually.

hahah, when i was a student we had a couple of really really cold camp outs and everything was fine and nobody died

but, we had fires lit in trashcans and generators and shit. i remember one time we had this really huge bonfire and it started to catch one of the big trees on fire that is in front of the bookstore. that fire got so hot it literally melted the side of a jeep that was parked to close and the paint bubbled up

they called the fire dept to put out the bonfire and everyone was pissed. public safety came out to put the smack down so a good friend of mine filled up a beer can with lighter fluid and some public safety person took the can away from went to pour it out in one of the trash can fires and lets say it didnt end well.

Yeah they called out to pack it up at 2am, and then mostly everyone was gone by 3am.

I wore a bunch of layers, I never got uncomfortable. I spent most of the campout walking around with friends.

Very grateful for Fountain being open, the free hot chocolate was nice.

Duke students stay in

The cold weather prompted Duke University officials to stop students from camping out on campus Friday night for tickets to the school’s upcoming game against UNC.

I was wondering why the campers were gone from the sully parking lot when I rolled in a few minutes ago... So, they called it mid-way through due to super-cold weather? Anyone have problems getting confirmed for tickets (or however they're doing it)?

We don't really know about tickets yet. They're suppose to have everything tabulated from the checkpoints and have tickets distributed by Monday I believe.

Yeah, apparently they'll be online and we'll have to claim them like any other basketball ticket. Dunno about the time fame though.

No idea why they decided to end it. A friend and I talked to some chick who apparently was Dawkin's girlfriend, and she said it was a decision reached by the student organizers. Some wanted to stay out, but they basically said 'fuck it' and pulled the plug.
