I'll take my android G1 one over that any day... I can't even imagine a big person using that keyboard... I really don't see any advantage this has over android or the g1.

no set date
rumor is either $149 or $199 (w/contract obviously)

^Thanks for that. I'm guessing I'm going to have to stick with the Palm Centro for now. I like Verizon and I get a discount with where I work so I'll go with a one-year contract for the Centro and maybe it will expand come this time next year...

Pre has stereo bluetooth.

Its hard to believe that G1 and iPhone do not. Hell even my cheap prepaid $40 nokia has stereo bluetooth.

I would feel gay wearing a headset so I don't have much experience with them... but how can a stereo bluetooth be that much better than a mono one with a phone call? I suppose if you listened to music or something it could matter, but arent you just listening via one ear? I dont really see the point.. can anyone explain?

Stereo headset aren't that much better than mono headset for making calls. Stereo headset are much better than mono for listening to music or podcasts. They are a lot less annoying than dealing with wired stereo earbuds too. Theres no mini cable to get tangled and eventually break.

I listen to podcasts all the time with my S9 Stereo bluetooth headphones. Also, its possible to get a stereo bluetooth receiver that you can stream music to your home stereo.

I don't think the iPhone or G1 supports file transfers or any other bluetooth protocols that are useful. They only do calls over mono headsets.

Its odd, you would think Apple would have opted to go with bluetooth stereo so they wouldn't have to tarnish the design with that ugly 3.5mm jack.

The premise of the thread is flawed. The Pre wasn't intended to be an "iPhone killer". It strives to be quality phone in the growing smartphone market. Listen to what the investors (like Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners, who i've been fortunate to talk to) or engineers (like jon rubenstein).

The Pre is aiming at the space between a Blackberry and an iPhone. Palm is simply betting (the farm, btw) that the segment of users there is large. Certain sacrifices were made for this first new device after Palm's resurrection, like the 8GB of storage that some people feel is inadequate. But there will be other devices, in different form factors, some that might lean more media-cenric.

An earlier poster pointed out the lack of a distribution method like Apple's App Store. that won't be case when the Pre is released -- a similar app store will be launched by Palm too.

it IS inadequate. plus no expandability using micro_SDHC cards. his explanation is BS. they must have run out of money.

Quote :
"The decision to include or not include expandable storage is an easy one when design is the highest priority. The physical size of the device would have been compromised if we added another physical component to Pre. Just a millimeter can seriously impact the curvature of the design in a way that minimizes the design intent. We wanted to maintain a slick curved slider design without building out too much thickness. When you look at the two parts of the product and see how thin they really are, you may be amazed that we were able to fit everything in. And yes, all the stuff does fit.

how many people (that aren't using their phone as an mp3 or media player) really need anywhere NEAR 8GB of storage?

If he has good camera and video capabilities 8gb can be justified. Maybe even use it for voice notes. But 8gb in a phone by default is quite a bit. I would 1-2 gb would be plenty default storage at the current state of the gadgetry.

Wow...by no means do I expect this to be an "iPhone killer", it looks like a nice phone for Sprint users. As much as I would like an iPhone, I'm not willing to pay the AT&T bill. $40/month SERO bill FTMFW.

Does anyone know anything about the release date and/or price range?

Well, all I can say is having worked in the hardware system integration group for iPod, I've gained a healthy appreciation for how astonishing it is that engineers can figure out how to pack what we've come to expect from mobile devices in small form factors. i'm giving the Palm engineers the benefit of the doubt.

yeah, Palm has been skyrocketing on the Nasdaq over the past few months. 4x increase. And another IPO round coming.

It's too bad the Pre is Sprint exclusive, that's going to be the downfall of the phone. Sprint has become the "also ran" wireless provider. If you don't have your phone on Verizon or AT&T in the US, forget about it.

Well the Pre is CDMA for sure, but we know there are GSM versions of it for Europe, plus I seem to recall reading that the Sprint exclusivity period was only 90 days or something. Wasn't anything stupid like the iPhone deal AT&T got.

If the phone is everything they say, Verizon would be retarded not to go after it with all they have.

OK. Just let me know when you know someone who is willing to switch to AT&T just because they are have such good coverage and service. I know they are the 'Power House' in terms of standing tall, and not going under, or have to sell out or go bankrupt, but that means just that. Jobs, also probably went with AT&T to give competition a chance, I mean how many people do you know would have an iPhone if it was on every, or at least a couple or three networks? That shit would be out of control. I am not saying the Pre is going to do so well on the Sprint network, and frankly I don't care, Verizon might be a better choice tho, but still AT&T offering the Pre would be retarded for a couple of reasons.

^ dude, gtfo of here with your long-winded subjective-ass anecdotal evidence supported shit-ass argument.

You can barely string together a coherent thought, and then expect the rest of us to take anything you have to say about technology seriously?

AT&T and Verizon are the two largest carriers in the US. Regardless of your limp-dick opinion, that is absolute and inarguable fact.

AT&T may be one of the largest carriers, but it does NOT make them the best.

I know many people with iPhones, and those people complain of random dropped calls constantly. It even happens with someone I know whom I speak to frequently and for extended times. It's frustrating to be mid-sentence and, oops, dropped call! There is something wrong with AT&T's network, even the Geniuses at the Apple store will tell you that the iPhone will drop calls and it's just how it is, nothing they can do to fix it. Seriously!?!

I have -never-, apart from leaving a coverage zone, had my Sprint phone randomly drop a call, and I've been with them for 10 years this year. Tell me what you want about how much Sprint sucks, but I love their call quality and I like knowing that when I have signal, then I have signal and I won't drop a call. I have signal in every city, no roaming, no "home" coverage area, etc. Sure I don't get it way out in the middle of the wilderness, but when I go out there, I'm going out there to get away from everyone anyway. And digital roaming still works if I have an emergency.

Not only that, but I have a severely grandfathered plan that is mega cheap for lots of options that they tacked on for free just so they will keep me, including unlimited data, etc. No other carrier, and even Sprint, cannot match my current plan.

At one point I almost switched carriers for a phone ... but now I don't care for any other carrier since the Pre is coming out, it looks like my patience is paying off. I just really hope the phone is all that it looks to be, because I'm excited about it.

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE IS ONLY GOOD FOR THESE THINGS:

"I have"

"I don't know ANYONE"

"It's been my experience"

OBJECTIVE, RESEARCH-BACKED EVIDENCE IS GOOD FOR THESE THINGS:

I have been with Alltel for seven years, and they have MAGNIFICENT coverage and service, but I am switching because they have never given me anything for free, and their data plans are about 30/month more than any acceptable competitor's plan. Can't wait to get this Treo Pro tomorrow. I would get the Pre, but its not a Windows Mobile phone Several Apps that I use heavily are WM only.

God you guys are dense.

Guess what? In reality, each carrier has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Let me spell them out for you:

AT&T:
Strength-Far and away the best 3G DATA network in the US. Light years better and more reliable coverage than any other US carrier, especially in major urban areas.
Weakness-Awful rural coverage, most dropped calls of any US carrier (notice their commercial claims are based on global, not US coverage). I don't understand the technical nature of it, but because of their 3G efforts, the rest of the network is pretty shitty.

Verizon:
Strength-The best, hands down, nationwide VOICE coverage. Even with the shutoff of their analog spectrum, they have much more widespread, reliable coverage, especially in the mid-west and rural regions.
Weakness-Inconsistent high-speed data coverage, proprietary data network access, awful carrier branded software platforms. This is getting better (the last 2 point) with the BlackBerry Storm, but you are still tied to Blackberry (proprietary data network, just not Verizon's)

Sprint:
Strength-PTT with the merger of Nextel. Great coverage in specific US markets, both data and voice. Lots of tethering options.
Weakness-blackout markets. There are entire regions of the US where Sprint has ZERO coverage, or uses 2nd-tier access roaming on other carrier networks. Their phones have traditionally been very very basic, and lacked the data/web capabilities of major competitors.

So please fools, quit with the anecdotal shit. And Alltel, like it or not, is a tiny regional carrier with almost all leased network access. They don't even count (and I had Alltel for years and their service was terrible).

dang... ya'll get pissy over your phones huh.

I started my smartphone experience with the 700p. Loved it. Was very reluctant to give it up for my current WM (ppc6800) but I started to see how customizable it was so i made the jump. Since WM6.1 and unlocking the GPS chip on the 6800 it does everything I want my phone to do. I have pic mail, GPS, mp3 player, streaming music (online radio/sirius/pandora), chat style text, AIM and all the other PDA functions. But I soon grew tired of the landscape keyboard... Have you ever tried to hold a drink and text with a landscape keyboard?? its fuckin annoying!

So i'm anxiously waiting for the Pre to come out because i'll be damned if i'm gonna give up my $40 phone bill that has unlimited data text and insurance.

And as far as it ONLLLLLY having 8gb.... learn to stream music and you dont need a phone with 100gb hdd. I have a gb or so of music on my microSD card and the rest is for pictures. After a year and a half of use I still have almost a gb free still.

That's roughly the price on mine with Sprint ...

400 Anytime (+$5 for every addtl 50 mins)
1000 Text Messages
Unlimited Picture Mail
Unlimited Data (and my phone allows bluetooth and cable tethering too)
6pm Unlimited Nights & Weekends
Unlimited Sprint to Sprint

$47 total after taxes/fees

Right, I didn't mean to infer you could get a plan like that now ... I've been with Sprint for 10 years, they just keep adding stuff onto my account every time I renew.

I'm really hoping that they'll let me keep my plan when the Pre comes out, they should since their only restriction is having a plan with Data. Although I'll be getting the phone regardless, I'm sure they'll be as willing to work with me on this as they always have been. They like giving me things.

That's the thing with Alltel, they have never given me anything. Well, I take that back. They gave me an extra 250 anytime minutes once, and like 3 months later they were gone. I was back to 500 anytime minutes a month. Probably because I did not use them, but still how are you going to give me something hen take it back?

only problem with everyone coming out with an app store is that the apps don't transfer from brand to brand. I'm pretty much locked into my iphone now because I've spent probably 150-200$ on apps. not that I mind being locked in with the iphone love it, just something to think about. apple has a lot of people that if they switch phones they're going to loose a lot of $$$ in apps.

^^ Ah, that's a good point, I never thought of that way, which I probably should have, but when you are running WM you don't have to think about such things That's the main reason I am going with the Treo Pro over the Pre, as I expressed in a previous post that apps that I use heavily are WM only.
