I know absolutely nothing about Andrew Brackman the baseball player

Does he throw a straight curve, like 12-6, or a slurve-type pitch like Randy Johnson

A big hook from a guy his size would be nasty

Anyone else here listen to Up and In, the Baseball Prospectus Podcast?

They were really pretty down on Brackman on Wednesday's show when they released the top 10 Yankee prospect list. Apparently his control is way off right now.

Quote :
"Curveball: Throws both a 12-6 and knuckle curve, when he commands them (a big "if") both can be devastating strikeout pitches. However, this year, the break on his CB's has been inconsistent. While his knuckle curve normally sits 78-81, he has thrown it as low as 73 with little tilt, probably as a result of arm fatigue and resultant faulty mechanics. However, in Hawaiian league play, Nardi Contreras said Brackman "showed a great curveball.""

I know nothing about him in the minors, but the knuckle curve was supposed to be nasty in college.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2011/09/07/2011-09-07_happy_ending_to_tall_story.html

Quote :
"Andrew Brackman, the Yanks' 2007 first-round pick and the former hoops player at N.C.State, was among the five players called up Tuesday from Triple-A Scranton. The 6-foot-10 righty struggled mightily with his control for much of this season and admitted he considered walking away from the game after an embarrassing start at Durham in July.

"That was definitely the lowest point in the season for me. It was tough to get on the bus. Very hard," the 25-year-old Brackman said. "I had some conversations with my dad, talking about what to do after baseball....But we didn't come up with any Plan B's. He yelled at me and told me to get on the bus.

"And I decided I'm not going to just hang it up. I'm going to go to the end and see what happens. I just stuck with it. I told myself I had to get better, and found a way to do it."

With a 2-6 record and an unsightly 8.10 ERA in 13 Triple-A starts, Brackman was shifted to the bullpen following another rough outing - a nine-walk disaster in Buffalo on July 29. But he made a mechanical adjustment with the positioning of his hands at the start of his delivery, and allowed just three earned runs over 20-1/3 innings in nine relief appearances thereafter.

"It was a rough season, but I've been throwing the ball well lately," Brackman said. "I was at a point in the season where something had to change and I had to do something to get better....It's a funny game, something so small can help you out so much. I'm just glad to be feeling the way I do now.""

He hasn't been doing so hot in Scranton. Control has been way off for 2 seasons now, mostly. I guess they think this might break him out of his funk and let them determine whether he's worth the long term attention?

^^^ Did you even read the quoted text from above. Yes he was having control issues and then made a mechanical adjustment that has made a difference. The Yanks are calling him up because they think he can help the team, not to experiment with his control.

^^ no chance, but he's been able to give the Yanks some spot relief which gives their pen some extra rest heading into the post season. Hopefully Brackman can make the 25 man roster in the spring.

^^^^ yeah i know he won't be on the playoff roster. if you don't think he'll be on the playoff roster, and since he didn't throw an inning for the yankees until the day after they clinched the division, i dare say that he was called up to work on his location.

Quote :
"NEW YORK — The Yankees severed ties today with former No. 1 draft pick Andrew Brackman, releasing the pitcher instead of picking up the option on his contract. General manager Brian Cashman announced the move, which comes after Brackman regressed badly in the minor leagues.

The 6-foot-11 right-hander entered spring training with a chance to impress coaches, only to be slowed by a groin injury. Brackman, 25, struggled so badly with his command that the Yankees moved him into the bullpen, where he finished the season as a late-season call-up.

Once a highly touted prospect, Brackman made just three appearances for the Yankees, allowing no runs in 2 1/3 innings.

The Yankees took a chance on Brackman out of North Carolina State, where he also played basketball. Despite needing Tommy John surgery, the Yankees chose him 30th overall in the 2007 draft and gave him a four-year major league deal and a $3.35 million signing bonus.

They hoped they had landed a high-end starer. Instead, Brackman struggled after surgery, rediscovered himself with an impressive 2010 season, and then faltered.
In 33 appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, most of them out of the bullpen, Brackman went 306 with a 6.00 ERA. He issued 75 walks, or seven per every nine innings he pitched."

He got a $3m signing bonus.

Even if he does absolutely nothing for a long, long time, he'll be just fine assuming he didn't do anything ridiculous.

the option on his contract was too much ... but he'll definitely sign somewhere else for much less than the 3.3 mil he got before - way to cash in on potential alone

Brackman is now a Cincinnati Red

Quote :
"A person familiar with the negotiations says 6-foot-10 pitching prospect Andrew Brackman has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the agreement had not been announced.

Brackman, let go by the New York Yankees, would be paid $500,000 if he’s in the major leagues, The 26-year-old would get $480,000 if he’s in the minors.

New York signed the right-hander for a $3.35 million bonus in 2007, knowing he likely would need elbow ligament-replacement surgery. He made his major league debut on Sept. 22 this year and had three appearances, all against Tampa Bay. He allowed one hit and three walks in 2 1-3 scoreless innings."

Yes, he's from Cincy.

Baseball America still had him at #3 on the Yankee's prospect list last year, he still might have something left. Too bad the Mudcats lost their Reds affiliation last year.

Didn't know that, I thought they were always high-A

But still, not like he would be spending any time at AA, either. AAA with a cup of coffee and then it's on to a career as a high school basketball coach.

Stephen Strasburg spent a good chunk of last year in AA on his way back. I have no idea why the Reds would do the same thing, but if they want to develop him more, he might start in AA and move up to AAA by season's end.

But yeah, for those who don't know, the Mudcats are now the Indian's high-A club, which is more fitting for their ugly stadium in the middle of nowhere.

He pitched six innings at AA, and his time in the minors was rehab

Brackman is damaged goods who spent an entire season at AAA and is already 26. He's not going back.

Good lord. This shit just blows me away. Sports teams have so much god damn money that guys can retire after having done literally nothing productive in the sport with more cash than what, 98% of Americans will ever have? Unreal.
