Glad you posted this, b/c I have 1 lb. 93/7 beef frozen in the fridge and couldn't decide what I wanted to cook. Tacos always seems to last for a longggg time, but the sides/toppings are hella expensive.

Because I prolly won't eat a whole head of lettuce (unless I do buy some sandwich meats), I get the bag of shredded lettuce for the tacos, an onion, sour cream, tomatoes, cheese. Shit adds up when you only have $30.

Oh and the dinner kit thing that comes with shells and the salsa and mix.

^ Well, I already told you why I don't have any money, so it's what I have to deal with til' Wednesday, but then that money I get is going all to bills. So I bet I'll have like $100 only to last til' NEXT Wednesday (and that's if I get unemployment another week). *sigh*

stuffed peppers:

brown the beef, add 1/2 cup of rice, 1/2 cup water, some worchestershire sauce, and a couple cans of stewed tomatoes, simmer until the rice is cooked. top with grated cheese and dish into some bell pepper.

brown the meat. throw in two cans of tomatoes, some velveeta, and whatever spices you like. boil some macaroni and mix it in when it's done. it's like hamburger helper, but better.

I think I was only there once, and I was riding with the tanker so I think I spent as much time there as the aircrew, which wasn't much. but I can see how the officers would get a little more freedom than the enlisted. i remember hearing about one time our advance guys went through there, one of the powerplant meatheads beat the crap out of some portuguese diplomat at a bar. it's probably a good thing I wasn't on the advance party...

if you wanna go cheap, make chili. Chili beans, canned tomatoes, chips and cheese are all crazy cheap at Aldi and it'll last you a while.

There's an Aldi in Cary, Maynard and N. Harrison I think.

They have the best price I have seen on parmesan. I need to go buy 3 or 4 to go with my 12+ jars of spaghetti sauce.

Ragu buy one get one free at the teeter + buy $15, get $5 off your next purchase + $1 off 3 coupon = 6 jars of organic sauce for $4.64. Did that a couple times, second time got regular sauce and some mayo. Crazy cheap and now I have enough to last a while.

i'd say it's dependent on your shopping abilities more than your cooking abilities

plus, if you go with all the traditional toppings, it's pretty tough to come in at under $5

1lb ground beef - $2-$3
1 tomato - $1
Shells - $1+
Lettuce - $1
Cheese - $2-$3
Sour Cream - $1

Texas Pete? Taco Seasoning? a lot of people already have this stuff laying around though

But of course you'd have some of that left over after making the meal...

Sorry, Tuesday was the last day.

However Walgreens has Ragu and Skippy $2 a jar, buy 8 and get $10 back to use next time. $6 for 8, or even cheaper if you have coupons. This is until Saturday (1-24-09).

You can then use the $10 coupon to buy the free after rebate items and get your money back that way.

Swedish meatballs.

It's like that, plus tomato sauce, plus grape jelly, plus some chili powder, and they're like instantly bomb-ass.

meatloafs freeze well, and it isnt an enormous effort to make 5x the recipe like meatballs. or you could make a couple of lasagnes.

here is an unconventional ground beef recipe i have tried before and found to be tasty.
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Popeye-Special/Detail.aspx
one thing that is cool about the allrecipes site is you can infinitely scale the number of servings up or down.

Popeye Special

INGREDIENTS

* 1 pound ground beef
* 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
* 1/2 pound fresh spinach, torn
* 6 green onions, sliced
* 1/4 cup chopped celery
* 1/4 cup chopped sweet red pepper
* 1 teaspoon garlic salt
* 1/2 teaspoon pepper
* 6 eggs, beaten

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large skillet, brown beef and mushrooms; drain. Add spinach, onions, celery, red pepper, garlic salt and pepper. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Add eggs; cook and stir just until the eggs are set. Serve immediately.
