You can test drive a 911 anywhere...

The C4 does not have wider track, and is NOT faster than a C2. The C4S is the one that's got more goodies, and was available 02 and up, with a decent increase in price (figure about $30-35k starting out), used w/today's market. C4 (99 through 01) is AWD and slightly heavier than my car. It also has stability, ebc, etc. standard.

Drove the M3 again, fixed the check engine light...

So easy to work on, gobs and gobs of oversteer on demand, so easy to drive fast. I feel stupid for getting rid of it. Now that I have a deposit at a negotiated low price, mofos are popping out of the woodwork who were offering more. Where were these people before the deposit, the car's been for sale for a LOOONG time...

I too, would like to drive Ahmet's 911. I've driven a '97 911 Convertible but thats been my only experience. Plus it was some girl's car thus automatic I didn't push it hard obviously.

I consider myself a damn good driver, but I'm easing into the whole RWD mindset. 95% of my autox/track experience is with FWD cars so you won't find me bombing around driving the S2000 like an idiot I plan on testing those limits off public roads come spring

but for reals, I wanna drive your 911

I will let any and everyone drive my modified car, the most expensive one I've owned ever... Yeah, I'm afraid not. You bitches can come check it out, and talk to me at length, ride in it, etc. however. I particularly encourage that on track. I'm sure I'll take it to VIR soon. The bunch I go with generally includes a GT3 driven by Rex (Wrecks) who's an advanced driver also, as well as other somewhat modified 911s, for an enthusiast I feel this ought to be a worthwhile experience, take me up on it. Good times.

Are you in the U.S. Dan (or when will you be). I am almost positive I'll hit up VIR in the next 6 weeks. Date has yet to be determined. I'll be instructing, but I should have plenty of time to give rides to people, particularly towards the end of the day Saturday, or Sunday. If I can hit up Chin, there'll be more free time of course.

As for the e90, owner is not on TWW. I have driven it many times, he will probably put it on track also. If you have anything to ask, shoot. I'll say a few words on it;

I want a good balance of feedback vs. noise. I don't want the pedal effort to be unnecessarily high for example, nor the steering too heavy. The M3's steering is a lot heavier (and weighed very well), but it ultimately doesn't convey as much information as the 911. It's a relatively small step up from the e46, which was a giant leap up from the e36 in feel IMO. The e90 is how a sport sedan should be built, it would do great as an only car. The engine tone is seductive, the power band is great. It's a great package as a sedan. I would never buy a coupe.

Things I like about the e90: Engine response, tone, power. Lack of play or in the brake, clutch take up, shifter feel (M3's had great transmissions for decades, but lacked a good shifter, now they've got one), steering feel, perceived solidness of build, styling.

Dislike: Weight, isolation/lack of feed back. It's not a lively joyous car, it'll get sideways, or do what you want it to, but it shows it's weight.

Overall though, I'm quite impressed with the e90. Impressed, but currently not my cup of tea.

Well it's not the most "personal" vehicle. I think that'd be hard to achieve in a 3500+lbs vehicle. It's just really good for the weight, but.. the weight is still there.

As for your qualifications... I think if you've touched a Ferrari, you're automatically qualified. :p

My favorite 911 is the C4S. I've driven just about every flavor of them hard and that was the one that seemed to make me feel the best flinging it places a civilized person would say it didn't belong.

It feels a tad heavier than an e46, but it really does mask it's weight well. If you're that interested, you should drive one. I'm sure dealers are willing to negotiate a decent amount nowadays also. I have not driven the new DCT.

Hahaha. It's not that bad, but it'll definitely weed out the sissies. Ahmet has driven it too... I'm sure he could testify that there are cars out there where the steering requires more effort than what I've got.

The interesting thing is, the e46's transmission is actually top notch, and it really is the shifter/linkage/bushings that makes the feel so bad. As for the "nothing feels as good as an S2k" thing... try a late model 911 Cable shifters go a long way towards isolating the shifter feel from accelerative forces, be it under braking, turning, etc. This is funny, because Porsche shifters used to be notoriously bad through the 80s, my how far they've come. :'(

As for my exhaust, what you see are just the tips, the car has a full fab$peed set up. It's obnoxiously loud, and very light but I can't hate the loud (though the tone is great), so it's in the process of coming out of the car. I will probably keep the tips though, I don't think they look so bad.

UUC has some solutions.

I've used the ERK with the DSSR on the E36 and it helped a ton.

Yeah, switch out the shifter, the linkage, and some people have reported a smoother tranny with after market fluids. Personally, I just deal with it.

Just saw that you actually wanted to buy an e46......if you buy in warranty stick with the OEM fluids.

Easiest to replace is obviously the shifter (some difference but not a lot).
More $$ and time is definitely the linkage. (biggest difference)

That IS a sunroofless e46, with manual seats, and a lightweight battery! It's for sale at $20k obo, owner has replaced it with a 996.
