to answer your first question. All our 'wealth' was equity. As you are aware, as with a home, equity is the increase in value of an item since purchase before selling. As the faith in certain goods fell (e.g. home values) this equity fell as well. Since equity isn't accumulated wealth (since it hasn't been sold at the higher value) and merely perceived wealth the money can fluctuate. Rises in stock prices work out the same way. The money in there was equity and now its gone. There is no real money being lost, only faith in value.

I have never experienced this, but I am sure that almost any website could be considered sketchy technically.
