So, if they are planning an end to the Free Expression Tunnel, how are they planning to enforce it? Are campus buildings, once again, going to be target of grafitti? 2/2/2009 10:52:39 PM |

Its a fucking free expression tunnel. Of course there is gonna be shit on there that a news channel can talk about. Thats part of it. If you're harmed by what some fuckers paint on a wall enough to get up in arms about it, then thats your problem. Leave the tunnel how it is. Our administration is full of fuckups that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Why can't they just come out and say, "We support our students and their rights to uphold a long standing tradition that is the Free Expression Tunnel. We as a University, do not condone the use of the tunnel as a means of spreading violence or slurs, but as a way for students to express their views, opinions and artistry"
is it THAT fucking hard? 2/3/2009 12:55:40 AM |

unethical and fucked up sure. Yet i find it rediculous that university police are looking into the matter. This is the Free Expression tunnel.....
I do not condone what was done to honor Kay Yow but by letting the university/police regulate this matter we are destroying the intent in which the tunnel was created to allow students a legal avenue to grafiti and express themselves. Just as easily as these UNC hooligans defaced the mural; students are free as one did to repaint over this.
Otherwise we are watering down the word "freedom" much like how the US. gov't enjoys doing so.
We might as well just call it the Semi-Free Expression Tunnel 2/3/2009 10:17:43 AM |

I think the university police are just trying to find out who did it, they will NOT be charged with any crime if they do. They have already stated this.
I for one hope they do find out who did it and make it public. Just because it is free expression and they have every right to express themselves, there is nothing that says they have to remain anonymous. 2/3/2009 10:28:01 AM |

If they closed the free expression tunnel I hope they get an uproar and the entire campus painted over in response

i do not understand how this is worthy of closing down the free expression tunnel.
this makes no sense to me. 2/3/2009 10:48:17 AM |

for the same reason people were upset and demanding the police do a full blown investigation over the TP "noose" incident. Out of the two though i'd say the kay yow thing definitely is more deserving of attention.
I think this was completely classless by those from UNC. As much as i hate UNC i wouldn't screw with something honording Dean Smith when he passes. 2/3/2009 12:25:17 PM |

Shouldn't the students get a group together to guard the tunnel in the days leading up to and after the UNC game? Seems like they would have learned this after the football game. 2/3/2009 12:34:49 PM |

my point, which i think was pretty clear, was the tunnel was painted before the football game. it seems that that would have been a lesson to guard the tunnel for future UNC games. but apparently it wasn't. because it got painted again. 2/3/2009 1:10:53 PM |

i don't know if this has been mentioned, but didn't the free expression tunnel evolve because they couldn't keep kids from painting in there and so finally said "fuck it, have fun?"
As a PS -- one of the news channels this morning was scrolling "NCSU considers getting rid of Free Expression." Thought it was a shortened headline that actually offered something poignant.

"Worst People in the World..."
Quote : | "Worst people in the world deface Kay Yow memorial
By Eamonn Brennan
Gunning for "worst person in the world" honors? Really aching to be thrown in that Ann Coulter/Michael Moore/Sean Hannity/Dick Vitale (sorry) territory? Want your parents to know they've failed -- utterly, spectacularly failed -- in their simple quest to raise a normal, socialized adult? Then I've got an example for you to follow. Do exactly what these people did. Deface the memorial of a beloved, recently deceased cancer victim with the words "cancer rules." Reach for the stars! The trail has been blazed:
A mural in N.C. State University's Free Expression Tunnel to honor women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who died Jan. 24 after a long struggle with breast cancer, was defaced Saturday with blue paint and offensive language. A blue mustache and the phrase "cancer rules" were added to the painting, which shows a portrait of Yow against a pink background. The graffiti was removed and the mural restored by early Sunday morning, but the incident did not sit well with students.
As Ufford notes, this took place in the Free Expression Tunnel, so, you know, point taken. You're technically allowed to say whatever you want. Congratulations, whoever did this, on that brilliant piece of insight.
In the same spirit, allow me to say that you are the worst people in recent memory -- I'm tracing my way back to World War II, and I haven't stopped yet -- and you deserve to be found out, imprisoned, raised in the manner of a vicious dog, and then inserted into a ring to fight each other to the death. Assuming, that is, that there's more than one vandal involved here. If it's just one person, I hereby sentence him or her to sit through an endlessly looped Mike Patrick-Dick Vitale Duke broadcast. That'll teach you.
