i like how you and pretty much everyone else in this thread hasn't said a word about pure-breeding of dogs. this is the point that i said is decent. pure-breeding of dogs is often quite less healthy for dogs. they risk major genetic defects for their dogs just for some aesthetic benefit. that is shitty.

but as i said. because peta uses such extreme (and frankly stupid) methods, people aren't even talking about the issue at hand. they're talking about how stupid peta is.

the problem is not "pure bred" dogs.

the problem is "inbred" dogs.

which is what unscrupulous breeders resort to when they don't want to pay stud fees.

inbred dogs are certainly worse. but pure breeds have plenty of problems too.

ask my parents' dog's congenital spine problems. (and it was an akc dog)

Hit the nail on the head.

The purebred dogs that are having congenital issues are from breeders that only breed within their kennel and only care about money. Most of the people at these dog shows are also part-time breeders with have huge desires to improve their breed of choice. I went to one dog showing here in Raleigh last year and one lady has semen shipped from another breeder across the country so as to improve her gene pool. The best breeders are often the ones not making any profits off the puppies.

^^maybe you guys are right. and i'm sure that plenty of breeders have the best intent. but most people who purchase dogs don't know the first thing about whether their dog was inbred or not.

anyhow, my main point is that there is a point to be made about pure-bred dogs. an argument could be made against the practice that isn't outrageous. unfortunately, peta tries to make everything as outrageous as they can (likely to detriment of worthy causes advocating for the humane treatment of animals). it actually seems pretty selfish of these people.

I hear what you're saying; the problem is that the issue isn't as black and white as PETA is making it out. There are plenty of responsible breeders out there that take good care of their animals and use extensive networking with the community to ensure that their animals are purchased into capable families rather than euthanized. The act of breeding itself is no more evil than a couple deciding to conceive if they've been tested to have a chance of passing a congenital defect to their infant.

And their "same thing, different species" comment is silly. Should all of our laws be applied to animal activity as well? If we're just animals, surely our natural environment isn't air conditioned homes, automobiles and grocery stores. We should be able to walk around naked and fuck any woman we're strong enough to take. Jesus, these people stick in craw almost as much as the Scientologists.

i think im gonna go home tonight and beat my dog for no good reason.

and then i'll tell her, "because i have opposoble thumbs, that's why."

and then make her eat dry kibbles instead of canned IAMS for a week.

and then i'll dress her up in pink ballet tutu with an umbrella and a hat, send a picture to PETA and tell them to take me off their email list.

^ dry kibble is better for their teeth than canned food, anyways, so there you'll be doing her a favor.

Despite the info in the thread, I'm going to ask my ANS professor (Ange) what her opinion of PETA is. Should be at least more interesting than the (lack of) response from my classmates.

"Biden's Puppy Breeder: "Never, Never, Never Again"
Woman is vilified for selling a pedigreed pup to the Bidens.

By KAREN ARAIZA , Fri, Apr 10, 2009 Philadelphia News

Fifteen minutes of fame turned into four months of bitter remorse for the Chester County woman who sold the Bidens their adorable little German shepherd puppy.

Linda Brown's been investigated, scorned and had her life threatened.

"I thought when Joe Biden bought a puppy from me, what an honor," Brown told the Daily Local News. "Out of millions of breeders in the country, in the world, he picked me."

That was December.

When the story got out, Brown faced backlash from pet lovers who thought the Bidens should have opted for a shelter over a breeder to find their new puppy.

PETA seized the moment as an opportunity to blame the killing of shelter animals on people who buy from breeders. The organization's TV commercial, "Buy One, Get One Killed" ran in Delaware after the Biden puppy story made headlines.

Dog wardens from the state showed up at Brown's Wolf Den kennel, repeatedly, for inspections.

"I was cited for a piece of kibble on the floor and five strands of dog hair. They took a picture of that, they walked around, snapped pictures and don't tell you why," Brown told the newspaper.

She was found "not guilty" for each citation, but hiring a lawyer for the court hearings has cost her $4,000 so far in legal fees.

Brown says she and Biden both received death threats from animal activists.

"Never, never, never again," Brown said about selling a dog to anyone with a high profile.

Her advice to breeders who've called about the Obama's puppy search: Don't do it!

"It's been horrific since December," she said."
