Why CAN'T the schedules be made a month after the previous season ends? College basketball teams routinely schedule 10-15 non-conference games on less than a year's notice. You're telling me football teams can't figure out 4 a year? Especially when 90% of games in September are nonconference, so you're not trying to plan around a conference schedule?

^ I think part of the issue is that basketball is more flexible as to what days can be played. With football there are 2 days a week that you can ever play on and each team only plays 12 times...so to schedule good teams they have to start early and set up deals like we did with the gamecocks. I'm sure you could schedule everything after the season ended but you would end up with a bunch of teams like Murray State. 2/12/2009 10:06:34 PM |

Or maybe they schedule stuff years and years out just for shits and giggles. I'm kinda sure that nobody here would be able to do anything but guess about the why's and how's of football scheduling.
Mine is that if you say "shit...basketball teams do it all the time, it must be really simple, why don't they do it like that", then you've overlooked one or more important items. 2/12/2009 10:17:15 PM |

GIVE ME A BREAK. That is an awesome time to have the game. Make our fans actually show up for once on Thanksgiving. I think we could be 7-4 or 8-3 going into that game and they could have the exact same record so it will be IMPORTANTE! 2/12/2009 11:45:46 PM |

^That's assuming the only (2) wins are the cupcakes. If we lost to one of the cupcakes, we could mathematically go to a bowl at 6-6, lame as it would be. I don't know why I'm bothering to write this nonsense though, it's moot, we're going to win 9. 2/13/2009 11:02:21 AM |

I am optimistic for a good bowl game next year seeing this schedule
But losing RW, Eugene, Baker, Bowens, and a half dozen defensive players to season ending injuries right out of the gate would quickly phuck it all up.... and be some classic NC State shit.... 2/13/2009 11:49:01 AM |

looks like 8-9 wins is pretty feasible, but this is all dependent on injuries. if RW stays healthy at least, we should be in good shape! 2/13/2009 12:52:26 PM |

^Good job...I had two different friends that scheduled their weddings the weekend of the State-Carolina game in 06 and 07. To be fair, before 06 the game had been played in late September-mid October as far back as I could recall though. Another friend got married in 05 and was smart enough to look out for us and get married the weekend of a Thursday night game .

It's not like Toney is just sitting around playing Madden all day. He's lifting and doing rehab workouts to make his knee stronger. Sure he couldn't practice, but he is trying to stay in shape. The only thing I would worry about with him is his cardio conditioning. In that case ease him into the rotation where he's only in for like 5-8 carries a game, then gradually give him a normal load as the season goes on, provided he's showing something out there.

I did forget that Pitt was ranked at the end of the year. So I guess we hit 3 of the 4 criteria I was hoping for (I-AA, BCS team, ranked team), and scheduled another I-AA game instead of a non-BCS team (which ECU will have filled).
As for saying that everybody would schedule cupcakes all the time if we scheduled on 1 years notice ... well, everybody still has to schedule 4 games (3 if you're the Pac-10). Why can't everybody play each other?
On that note, Statefans listed all the teams that are still looking to fill their schedule. Those teams include Clemson, South Florida, Wisconsin, Kansas State, Missouri, Akron, Air Force, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Florida Atlantic. Shoot, Louisville, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Arkansas State still need to schedule two non-conference games. Why couldn't we grab one of those teams (other than Rutgers, since we just played them)?

I've noticed a lot of people picking Pitt to beat us, but isn't McCoy leaving for the NFL? I was not at all impressed with their QBs last year, especially not in that terrible bowl game. Seems like they might have serious trouble putting points on the board without McCoy. 2/13/2009 6:40:42 PM |

Well of course Clemson is in our conference and we play them already. We already have a contract with South Florida and will make a return trip to Tampa in the future. Wisconsin and Missouri would have been great matchups, but a lot of our fans wouldn't be able to travel for those games. K-State would have probably been an easy win b/c of the transition that will be going on. Same for Syracuse. Mississippi State probably wouldn't want another game with an ACC opponent b/c they play GT this season. Kentucky would have been a good matchup. The one I would have liked the most would have been Rutgers b/c of the bowl game. Russell Wilson and company could have gotten some revenge. Also whenever the away game would be, our fans could travel pretty easily to it, and maybe make it into a vacation to NYC.2/13/2009 7:00:10 PM |

That list from SFN is shit. Clemson has 12 games. Wisconsin has 12 games. I stopped checking after that.
They just linked to an outside website that didn't have complete information. It's like they asked me who the Offensive starters for Duke were, and then ran a "story" headlined "DUKE DOESN'T HAVE ANY OFFENSE STARTERS".

Obviously a healthy Russell Wilson will partially determine our record next year but I'm not as concerned if he goes down as I was this past year.
We will have a much better backup than in recent years. None of us have seen Glennon play in a college game, however, I think most of us can agree that having him as a backup will be 1000000x better than Evans or Beck. 2/16/2009 9:37:05 AM |

Toney Baker was in Nelson a couple weeks ago - and the guy is still huuuge. Granted if he isnt seeing the holes develop and hitting them hard in preseason then TOB wont play him much. You cant argue that a guy that size is still a solid goal line back that we have been missing....
Also it wont matter that they took "our" thurs night game against FSU away from us this year. We will be getting a primetime spot when we are 6-1 going to FSU on Haloween 2/16/2009 11:56:39 AM |
