What are you talking about? America has quite a few distinct designs to call it's own and we contributed to the types of designs you see in places like Ikea. We bred some of the greatest designers of the modern era. Florence Knoll? Charles & Ray Eames? Eero Saarinen (ok, he was born in Finland, but moved to the US as a child and studied here)?

i'm also a +1 in the "ikea is awesome" category...sometimes you can find some good frames (not necessarily pictures...i mean like furniture-type frames) and replace the particleboard with wood 2/17/2009 11:22:37 AM |

My TV sits on a Knoll Credenza. My end tables are Knoll and Lehigh Leopold. My office chairs are Eames aluminum group. I gave my girlfriend an Eero Saarinen design chair by Knoll International for her birthday. And I've probably moved over $10k in modern furniture on eBay in the last two years. It's amazing what people in NYC and CA will pay for some of this stuff. I'd say my credentials will stack up against anyone on this website.
I did wiki Eero since I couldn't remember his home country if that makes you feel better.

We have 2 end tables, a dresser, a desk, and a rolling drawer thing for the office all from Ikea. All were purchased over 5 years ago and have been moved from the west coast to NC and within NC twice. All have held up very well. I did lose a large corner desk in a move but that was my stupidity, I packed too much stuff on it and it cracked in the middle.
We've started to amass some "real" furniture but I foresee a trip to Ikea sometime in the near future... 2/18/2009 11:08:02 AM |

With a name like that, you had to look up where he's from?
I have no idea who any of these designers are. I don't know who made ANY of the furniture in my house. If it looks good and it's comfortable and it's reasonably priced, I don't give a shit.
Come to think of it, I barely know who any clothing designers are either, and the ones I do only because the wife watches those shows and reads those magazines...2/18/2009 11:13:37 AM |

Eero Saarinen was an architect. He designed the JFK terminal in NY and the gateway arch in STL among other things.
Also, if you're a fan of designer chairs (e.g. Eames) and you can't afford them, you can check this out: Blind box vinyl replicas http://kidrobot.com/products2.cfm?ID=5422&cfid=12161630&cftoken=86469675&nav_chooser=&dept=TOYS&typ=BLIND%20BOX

^ You know he was supposedly heavily inspired by the roof of Dorton Arena. You can see the influence in some of his buildings like the terminal at JFK. 2/18/2009 1:07:01 PM |

I got one of mine at a yard sale in Louisburg for $70. Hand built in High Point in the 60's and then it sat barely used in a living room for 40 years (the house had a den that saw all the actual use). Almost mint condition with no fabric wear whatsoever. It's pretty sweet. Also picked up a 20's Lane Chest and a nice craftsman style cherry dresser (dated 1917) from that yard sale.

I do not like it when people outfit their entire apartments with cheap, new shit they don't need. And Ikea seems to readily satisfy those consumerist urges. 2/18/2009 1:52:20 PM |

Quote : | "When white people envision their dream home, a key part of the fantasy involves a least one piece of furniture designed by a famous architect from the 1930s.
Architects like Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier designed iconic modern furniture that has inspired virtually everything made by Ikea and Design Within Reach, both of which are key suppliers of furniture to white people.
But as with all things, white people will do whatever it takes to secure authenticity including paying thousands of dollars for a small piece of furniture.
If they are able to acquire this prized furniture, they will forever refer to it only by the designers name. “I spend hours in the van der Rohe, just looking through these beautiful books of his work.”
Referring to a white person’s expensive chair as a ‘chair’ is considered poor form and will likely result in a loss of trust and/or respect.
The best strategy for avoiding this faux pas is to look for the most uncomfortable chair in a white person’s home and ask “who designed that?” If they say “Ikea” or “Design within Reach” you can call it a chair, otherwise refer to it only by the name they give you.
It should also be noted that many white people are unable to acquire this furniture, but that does not mean you cannot use this information to your advantage.
In situations where you need to improve your connection with a white person, just mention how you hope to be successful enough to one day afford an original piece of furniture by <insert obscurely named architect>. If they have heard of the designer they will nod in agreement, if they have not, they will also nod in agreement and make a note to look it up later.
In either case, your status will rise." |
