WTF is going on in this thread? Something strange afoot at the Circle K.

this is one of those things i can definitely see both sides of, but i mean it seems a little bit obvious to me that this would happen in regards to the cartoon (black people, monkeys...not a good combo and it seems pretty blatantly obvious that it isn't, just given the history).

i think that the words on it are what push it a little bit to the racial side.

but i can see both sides. i'm not sure how i feel because while i can understand being offended, i don't understand why everything has to be turned into some big issue. everytime (and this is going to sound really bad, but i don't mean it in a negative way) that black people go apeshit (haha, ok that was intentional) over stuff like this it just draws MORE attention and like refuels the stigma that they are trying so desperately to escape. i mean i'm not saying let it slide, but when you have people like al sharpton, etc as your "martyr" or whatever, it just is NOT helping. it is making things worse.

Of course the dude is not saying that Obama should be shot and that Obama is a monkey.

But you would have to have the common sense of a doorknob to not see how that could be perceived as racist. He could have found a better way to get his point across.

I'd say the people DEEPLY offended by this are doing the same thing, since white politicians have long been compared to monkeys (and other animals) as well.

Don't get me wrong, I thought the cartoon was dumb and in poor taste and I disagree with it running, but the NAACP and the drama it is trying to perpetuate is beyond absurd.

I don't understand how any of you can see this as racist.
It actually seems to make sense that racists would tend to see this as racist, but normal people wouldn't.

I mean, come on.
Do you actually think the new york post would publish a "blacks = apes" racist comic?
I mean, really?
No, really
It's not the 1950's.
How in the hell could you imagine for even a second that this had racist intent?!?!?

Some of you are nuts."

What are racial terms for white people beside white trash, honkey, and cracker?

That's likely because you're a racist to begin with

Exactly.
It was never meant as ROFLMAO, but rather, "Ha, I get it. He tied two recent stories together. The one about the chimp getting shot, and the other about congress writing a bill."

Feel free to disagree, but it is 100% his intent that matters, and not what "could be perceived"

^ i was never arguing it was racist. i'm just saying i could see both sides.

and you are nuts if you think that blatant racism doesn't still exist. yes, in the form of comics. maybe not that one, but it does.

so you are the one that is frighteningly naive if you honestly think just because it isn't 1952, that racial undertones aren't present in the media. in any form.

and i'm not saying this is racist at all, i'm saying that it is OBVIOUS to ANYONE (or should be) that this cartoon could be perceived as racist. so yes, finding another way to get his point across may have been appropriate if he didn't INTEND to be provocative. because a rock would be smart enough to realize that people would infer things from this cartoon. so if he didn't INTEND for this type of reaction maybe he should have thought about the drawing a little more.

like i said, i can see BOTH sides of the argument. if you read my post above. and the post that i quoted (i omitted the part where it said that the cartoon was obviously not racist, because i figured if someone was going to comment, they would read the entire thread and not just one piece of something out of context)

Obviously perception does matter given all the press and this thread.

Well, I don't think that. But thanks for assuming I do. I was just saying that's there's no way this was intentionally racist.

It's like I said:
Quote :
"Even if they did "know what they were doing", it's not because they're racist, but for free media coverage."
... and I really even doubt that.

^^haha no i'm just saying that i think both sides are in the wrong and that just illustrates that CLEARLY race is still a huge problem in our country.

i mean the black people are like taking it way too far and rallying behind leaders that seriously keep them in the 1960s and reinforce stigmas

and people, like those in this thread, that think its impossible for racism to still exist (OMG YES IN THE MEDIA) must not get out of their houses. like ever. put down the WoW and take a little walk around town.

^ ok well i guess if you don't honestly think that racism doesn't exist then you are excluded from the naive people but i'm serious. and im getting confused. too big of a headache to argue

^^
Especially when, in situations like this, people scream, "racism!!" when there is none.

One time, I was telling a co-worker to not act like a child, except I said, "boy". He was black. I got looks. Then I thought, "Oh shit, 'boy' is racist, isn't it?" I mean, I did not in any way mean it as racist -- I don't even understand why 'boy' is considered racist in the first place. If you have censor yourself from innocent words like 'boy', then what hope is there?

I thing getting falsely accused of being racist for simply saying 'boy', is itself a type of racism.

BTTT People shouldn't have to censor themselves because others might perceive it as something it isn't.

The guy had a semi-witty cartoon idea to tie a couple of news stories together. Whether he realized it might be perceived as racist by a few people shouldn't matter at all. Lots of things will be perceived as racist by some people.
