Speaking of Fields...

Thursday night is Senior Night vs. Clemson - come out and support Fields if you can. She is the leading Wolfpack scorer over the past ten years and is currently third in the ACC, averaging 17.7 points per game. She is number one in minutes played, with 1,045 minutes (38.7/game), which is nearly 100 more than teammate Nikitta Gartrell, who is second in the ACC.

I think this is a really good point:

^Agreed. I think that's the main idea. Not to mention that they are going to post every position, even if they know who is going to be hired.

With that said, coaches in the WBB community know who's job this is. Everyone in that group clearly knows how much Yow was loved in the WBB community. So if someone comes in and was able to somehow beat out Glance in the process, this coach would be frowned upon IMMENSELY. I'm not saying you have to be friends with everyone to be a great coach. But any qualified, well-known, proven coach knows better than to make this jump.

For god sakes, just hire Glance. It'll make her happy, the players happy, and respect a dead women's wishes. No one gives a shit about women's basketball anyway. It's boring as fuck and makes a negligible amount of money for the university (probably loses money). Who cares if we're actually good.

^and that's lee fowler's perspective on ncsu athletics in a nutshell. and that's why i have no problem with looking for the best coach we can find nationally. unfortunately, fowler screwed up the message here by announcing to the world that he's not honoring his recently deceased hall-of-famer coach's wishes. why in god's name would you do that?

^Did you read the WRAL article? It actually makes a lot of sense he's doing it this way. By posting the job, but announcing that Glance is the chosen "successor" then no one is going to apply for it. He's legitimately handing her the position, but doing it the right way.

"the right way" would be to shut his mouth. do a coaching search and determine if glance is in fact that best person for the job. if she is, then announce that it was yow's wish. if not, then don't mention it. and no i didn't read the wral article.

I understand what you're saying, but I also put a lot of trust into Yow's decision. She probably knew womens basketball better than anyone else out there, and if she thought Glance was the best person for the job, she's probably right.

There are a few incredible womens coaches out there, but you'll never get them to leave their institutions. And the last thing Fowler needs is to instigate another round of raises for those coaches, like our last hiring fiasco.

While sometimes that might seem like the simplest thing to do, it's hard when you are required to attend events and speak (not to mention that all reporters have his cell number). So he could choose to "not comment" on nearly every question that comes his way, or he could answer the questions. Going the "no comment" route really isn't the way to go when you're an AD, at least in most situations.

Im curious to know what other coaches are putting their names in for Yow's vacant seat, b/c even if I was a good coach from a mid-major school, wanting a shot at a big name school/conference, coming in when the school, avid fans, former coach wanted someone else would be an enormous amount of pressure to deal with-beyond the normal pressure of collegiate coaching.

He hasn't hired anyone yet, so he hasn't announced to the world that he's not honoring his recently deceased hall-of-famer coach's wishes. That would only happen if he didn't hire Glance.

Do the search, hire Glance, and then it announces to the world that he's honoring Yow's wishes and that Glance is a good enough coach to be hired on her own merit instead of just because Yow wanted her to get the job.

ETA:
You also get to sit down and talk with a handful of young coaches out there who want the job, and if Glance decided to retire in five years or something, then you've got a list already of people you might want to call.

The story about Yow wanting Glance to get the job was already common knowledge. Fowler didn't do himself any favors by bringing it up, but it isn't like he's the original source of the story.

Here's an interesting perspective: http://www.wralsportsfan.com/voices/blogpost/4673408/

Quote :
"
Wolfpack faces tough decision on Glance
By Dane Huffman

North Carolina State faces a much harder decision on its women's basketball program than you might think, and that's why athletics director Lee Fowler has been cautious in deciding who will follow Kay Yow.

Many believe the Wolfpack should simply give the job to Stephanie Glance, the dedicated and able assistant who has been the interim coach since Yow stepped down. Even Yow, long before she died, pushed Fowler to name Glance her successor.

Fowler refused, believing the school would be better served by a search.

Glance may well get the job, but this is no easy choice. The weight of Fowler's decision on whether to hire Glance, or go a different direction, was obvious when State lost at home to North Carolina.

UNC athletics director Dick Baddour sat on press row at that game, dressed casually in a light blue sweater and watching from across the Carolina bench as Sylvia Hatchell's more talented team wore down N.C. State.

Diagonally across Reynolds Coliseum, in a corner behind the Wolfpack bench, was Fowler - blue jacket, red tie, standing alone with his hands in his pockets and watching as the game unfolded. After a Carolina fastbreak basket with less than three minutes to play, Fowler turned and left the gym as if he'd seen what he needed to see.

There is much at stake here on several levels. Yow's death cost N.C. State a national figure, a Hall of Fame coach whose program was consistently competitive.

That's not the case across the board at N.C. State, where ACC championships are few. The football team hasn't won one since 1979, the men's basketball team since 1987 and the baseball team since 1992.

State won the ACC men's and women's cross country titles in 2006 and the wrestling title recently as well. But N.C. State is not one of the ACC's elite athletic programs. The Wolfpack was ranked 56th in the country - and 10th in the ACC - in the final standings for the 2008 Director's Cup, which ranks athletic programs across the board.

State needs its women's basketball program to be strong. It has a great tradition and a fine facility in Reynolds, but faces some real challenges. North Carolina and Duke are entrenched as elite national programs and other ACC programs - most notably Maryland - have made huge strides in the sport. UNC opens renovated Carmichael Auditorium next season and Duke made a smart choice in Joanne P. McCallie as head coach.

The emotion of the recent months involving Yow doesn't hide the fact that State is in a tough spot. Hiring Glance would continue the link to Yow and the family atmosphere Yow developed at N.C. State. But even the best programs can lose altitude quickly after promoting respected assistants, as UNC found with Carl Torbush and Bill Guthridge and State learned with Mike O'Cain.

I went to several Wolfpack women's games this year, and the atmosphere wasn't what I expected. The Wolfpack averaged 2,292 fans this season, sixth in the ACC. But that total includes the 8,560 who came for Hoops for Hope after Yow's death. Take out that total and you have only 1,844 fans at an average Wolfpack game.

Duke, by comparison, averaged 6,655 and Carolina 3,979.

In watching Glance, I saw an engaged coach who worked with players, explained strategy, and dealt with the media with grace.

But can she lead over the long haul? Can she make State competitive with Duke and Carolina? Can she produce teams that draw fans to Reynolds Coliseum and get fans excited about Wolfpack basketball?

And most importantly, can she recruit the players State will need to be an elite program again? Even the Wolfpack women haven't won the ACC since 1991 and this team finished the regular season 13-16.

Perhaps Glance can. But the risk here is great. Yow's mystique will fade. The choice here is not just about honoring the past but preparing for future seasons in which the Wolfpack faces real challenges in women's basketball.

The wrong decision on a coach, however well-intentioned, could leave State with an empty gym and fading memories. Fowler is wise to be patient and not rush the decision on the next leader for a program with a great past and uncertain future."

I agree. But at the same time, brings up some good points. Sure, UNC, Duke, and Maryland are powerhouses of women's basketball. But why can't we be? We've had arguably the best coach, and we're still not performing as well as we could. But then again, you can ask that for all of our sports. Why can't we expect to beat the powerhouses? I do agree with the premise though, Fowler's got a tough call to make, but I hope Glance can build the program, and satisfy Yow's wishes.

While he makes a decent argument, I can tell you Dane has never been around that team. During the past 5 years or so, I don't think he has ever been to a game. Maybe after Yow's death he's attended a few, but I seriously question his credibility on knowing what's right for the program when he hasn't watched this team AT ALL throughout the past few years.

Not going to happen

per WRAL

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/4924361/

Quote :
"N.C. State has decided not to promote Stephanie Glance to the position of head women’s basketball coach, WRAL has learned from a source in the Wolfpack athletics office.

Glance served as coach Kay Yow’s top assistant and was named interim coach after Yow could not continue as coach. She continued to coach the team after Yow died.

Glance had expressed strong interest in the position and Yow pushed to have her named. Glance was out of the office Thursday afternoon and could not be reached for comment.

Wolfpack athletics director Lee Fowler was travelling and could not be Thursday afternoon. Fowler has told WRAL he expected to make a decision by the middle of April.

Well she's married now and named Kellie Harper. Her coach is actually on WCU's staff. I wonder if that is weird having your wife as your boss also. She went to Tennessee and while there she played point guard. She led the Vols to three straight national championships. So you know she's got a good pedigree. She's also not too bad on the eyes. At little old WCU she made the NCAA tournament 2 times in 5 years (2005, 2009). She won the Southern Conference tournament in 2005 and 2009, as well as finishing first in the conference in the regular season in 2007. She has also been in the Southern Conference Championship game 4 times. She was the 2007 SoCon COY. She has an overall record of 97-65.

My only hope is that this leads to his being released/fired/whatever. I honestly cant imagine how he can be retained after this fiasco. First of all, it wasnt public knowledge that Kay wanted Glance to be the successor until he opened his big mouth (I mean, I think we all knew that was probably the case, but we didnt know it for a fact). Why on Earth would he even mention that, unless he planned to give her the job? He is a walking PR nightmare...which is magnified when your media relations people suck ass too.

Thing is, the hiring was going to have a divided fanbase regardless...but if Glance was hired, then you have a segment thats disappointed we didnt get a bigger name. However, hiring anyone from the outside will result in having the other segment pissed the fuck off, and that segment includes most of your former players and big supporters, some that will very likely stop coming to games/giving money/etc. It doesnt matter if he manages to sign a big name coach, it doesnt matter if they win a championship in year one...the way he has handled this, it goes down as a fail for Fowler regardless.

What's that? Fowler publicly announced that we aren't hiring Grace?

First I've heard of that.

Seems what I read was, "North Carolina State University has decided not to promote Stephanie Glance to the position of head women’s basketball coach, WRAL has learned from sources within the university."

Quote :

How did he handle it incorrectly?
He conducted a wide search and included the fan favorite as a prospect. He announced that a hire will be made by mid-April. Currently, he has apparently either made a decision or narrowed down the search.
That's it.
There has been nothing further that can be attributed to him. How on earth is that considered a failure, and what could have been done to make it better?

^^^ at the red/white football game? i'm not a PR expert or anything but it seems like announcing a head coach not named stephanie glance at the kay yow spring game has bad idea written all over it.

i don't know anything about women's basketball so i'm going to see how this plays out in a half-interested way. to me though, it seems like fowler is going to come under fire regardless of the decision he makes. (hire glace vs. not) i'm sure he realizes this and feels that there are significantly stronger candidates out there than glance. that being said i do think this is one of those situations where he could make an emotional hire and not take too much heat if it didn't work out.

State fans would give the new coach a chance. They aren't going to boo her/him. Now they might boo Fowler, but they usually welcome coaches with open arms and give them a chance. I think Harper would be a fine hire actually.

Kay Yow died in January. You think a competent AD could have lined something up in 3 months. Not to mention the obvious candidate was Stephanie Glance. You think Fowler hasn't alienated a lot of people, especially those close to the WBB program?

You think this coaching search is going well do you?
