The government runs a deficit EVERY YEAR (save Clinton's years). Obama says he'll cut our excess spending in half within four years. My question is so what?
If I run up my credit card debt every year, but never stop overspending (regardless of amount) then eventually I'll go bankrupt.
How is the federal government different (other than the fact that to a degree they can control their "income")?

Here's the answer, which you already know... Running a deficit impacts our ability to borrow in the immediate time frame which has political consequences for the current politician. Running up a debt has long term consequences which won't come due for a long time, maybe not even in our lifetimes, but if the current politician doesn't spend that money then he/she will face immediate political consequences.
End of story. There's really nothing else to be said on the issue so don't expect anyone else to comment.

You're pretty much right. The problem with Obama is he tried to make people think he had what it took to do what was expedient for the country, not just his political career. A lot of people didn't buy it, but the truth is coming out in plenty of places now. Even the media can't totally sugar coat what he's doing. 3/3/2009 10:26:53 PM |

^^so basically (as I've always thought), a day will come when we're fucked from spending all this money we don't have. But it could be 100 years. 3/3/2009 10:51:27 PM |
