I'm not looking for realism here. This is a video game about interplanetary warfare. I want the controls to be fun and responsive.

I've shot a pistol in real life, but I've never shot a shotgun, SMG or Assault rifle, and I probably never will.

So I'm not looking for it to mimic real life. I'm looking for it to let me shoot someone from 15 feet away with better than 15 percent accuracy.

And thats not happening in Killzone 2.

I agree with all of that.

Its pretty sad that you shoot better when you don't use the aiming system and just shoot from the hip.

once you come to terms with this not being call of duty, you'll realize that the game is well made and that the only problem is your playing strategy. Apparently the person on the other team has no trouble figuring out how to kill you from 15 feet away. Also, it's not hip firing, it's shoulder firing without tucking your head down onto the sights. It's perfectly fine for shooting at something 25 yards away with enough accuracy to hit it. It's not realistic for COD 4 to be carrying the weapon around their hip anyway unless it's a light machine gun.

After playing this some more this morning, I'm realizing that this game improved on all the unrealistic aspects I hated about Call of Duty. You don't have to worry about being sniped out from 1000 yards with a assault rifle or submachine gun anymore. hand to hand combat is much more intense than a simple stabbing, usually involving bashing someone's head in 2-3 times with the butt of your gun after you've ran out of ammo. The shotgun obliterates people at close range, instead of having to pump multiple rounds into some asshole with juggernaut on. the submachine gun is better in close quarters than an assault rifle for a change. people can no longer be spinting down a street and just spin around to make a perfectly aimed shot. the guns overswing just like they should when you are pivoting around. you are no longer the trained marine who for some reason got his fat ass out of breath by running 9mph for 10 seconds and had to slow down to a brisk walk.

I also find very few little kids talking shit during the game; most people actually talk strategy for a change. I think the 18 years and up rating might have helped dramatically improve that aspect.

I don't think this game strains my eyes as much as COD4 did when switching between normal view and the sights, and I'm hoping it will be easier to play while I'm on the treadmill as well.

the complaints about this game make it sound like everyone complaining only plays halo

i shudder to think how badly they would have failed at something like BF2

never gave much credibility to anything you have to say anyway.
i want a party system, you know, that crazy idea that so many other successful multiplayer games have nowadays.

This game gives me a headache and makes me feel nauseous.

The menus and the in-game actually make me sick.

the halo comments were for the people bitching about not being able to spray and pray, but yeah, I guess that works for the "party" system as well

I've been playing multiplayer games forever and have 1) never had a "party" system in any game i've played and 2) never had a problem playing with friends

as far as the menus, who the fuck cares? do you really spend hours on the menus? if the menu implementation is one of your biggest gripes, get over it

not really sure where your whole lack of credibility with me comes from, but maybe you should just go back to hip firing halo sniper rifles at 5 ft for insta kills

what games have you played on PC? half the time you can't even pick your team in KZ2, you're forced into the auto-select. on top of that is the fact that since the menus are so slow, half the time a game is full by the time you can get a friend in one.

ok so, i beat the game yesterday....under stats it says i did it in 6 hours and 33 minutes....that was a major letdown. i didnt think i flew through it, half the time time run and gun and half the time taking cover and aiming...rather disappointing that its over so quick

so i tried online....im not so sure ill be keeping it. i tried playing and while i did finish 3rd in points, i didnt feel like i was killing anyone, it was more everyone runs to the same spot on the map and just shoots at eachother. all the games i played were like that. im just not so sure that this game type is a good online game. i dont know what it is

After playing a lot over the weekend, I've begun to come around on this game

You just have to accept the fact that its plays different than other shooters and not treat it like COD and the like

I've become fairly proficient in close range combat and am working on my mid and long range game

My KD is still shit and it will probably be a long time till I'm in the positive, if ever

but I'm actually enjoying it now, which is more than I could say 24 hours ago

Just beat the campaign. Did it all on Veteran except for the very last area/boss. That shit got absolutely retarded, could only take so many deaths before putting it to normal and just beating it. Overall though, I really enjoyed it. Some of the environments and set pieces they put you in look absolutely mindblowing. The weapons are all excellent too (<3 flamethrower) and the enemy AI is some of the best I've seen in a video game. They use cover extremely well and are very aggressive with grenades. I'll be online later for some multiplayer, taking a little break for now.

the AI works together better than any other game I remember playing before. They seem to know how to flank you on both sides and use grenades to flush you out or when you step into a small room. I generally don't play FPS games single player more than once, but this one is fairly entertaining.

Yeah, definitely give it a run through on Veteran. It really does give a decent challenge. Your health regenerates a lot slower which makes running and shooting out in the open basically impossible in most areas.

As far as the multiplayer, yeah the 32 player games can be a clusterfuck of people just running around. It's easy to rack up points in games like that though, just find a good sniping point on higher ground and have at it.

When you do get a group of people together who concentrate on completing the round objectives though, it's a lot of fun. I absolutely love the multiplayer map design, tons of verticality and multiple routes through areas. The fact that the visuals don't take much of a hit at all in multiplayer is amazing. Fuck saboteurs though, I can't wait to unlock that badge.

this game is fucking awesome. Love it. Yes the controls are different than COD4 and its hard as balls to get used to if you have played COD4 a lot, but this game is different. Is is supposed to feel heavy.

That said though, Guerrilla has already stated that they are going to look into doing a fix. Probably would be something like being able to change the x/y acceleration sensitivity. This would be nice. Check out the following thread:

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=killzone2&thread.id=206918&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

Quote :
"But...even after several hours of gameplay...the accuracy of the controls needs a major overhaul. It is very difficult to be accurate in its current state. Yes, this is perceived by most people as lag (and I can easily see why as what's on screen often lags behind what's in my hand)...but I don't think it's "lag". Rather, it seems to be that the acceleration of the x/y axis is way off. I have noticed this in several second rate FPS's before, but was unsure exactly what I was feeling until I played SOCOM Confrontation and it allowed me to not only adjust the sensitivity of the x/y, but also the acceleration of the x/y. Once I was able to do that in SOCOM, the controls became much more responsive and I had my control back. I was also able to tweak the size of the "dead zone"--ie: the amount of movement that is allowed for the analogue stick before it registers a movement. The dead zone in KZ2 is enormous--WAY too big. Sadly, KZ2 lacks the ability to adjust anything besides x/y sensitivity. A couple years ago, we might not even be having this conversation--but the problem is that COD4 came along and absolutely nailed the precision/sensitivity/acceleration of the x/y axis. We all now know what a FPS on a console should be like (especially those of us raised on a keyboard/mouse). It's not that I miss the "controls" of COD4 at all--I'm perfectly happy with the KZ2 controls. The issue is that the analogue sticks are tuned completely wrong...and I don't seem to be alone in this issue."

All this aside though, there is so much going on during a multiplayer map that its just awesome. I actually played a round of COD4 after a day off Killzone and it just seemed so tame. All the dust picking up, explosions, environment crumbling, its just so bad ass. Can't believe there are so many complaints.

But yes, Its much easier to get a head shot in COD4.

^ Just curious what are you doing, like an exercise bike? That's gotta mess up your aim, haha. Good idea though doing cardio and gaming. If you've got a nice system like that going you should do it more than once a week.

I have a decent treadmill in my living room, and I don't think it messes up my aim that much. I'm more of a run and gun type of player anyway, so it's not like I need pinpoint accuracy anyway. This game fits my style better than COD for that reason. I struggled trying to play socom with the controller tilt controlling the player's lean and stance while on a treadmill, but that game had other serious issues that made me stop playing it.

I usually set the treadmill to 3mph and 5% incline and go at it for an hour. The time simply disappears doing cardio that way.

So once you get to the higher ranks online the games you auto join get pretty ridiculous. Both teams putting spawn points in the same places near objectives gets pretty crazy with everyone spawning in the same place and what have you. It seems a little unbalanced to be honest. My kill/death ratio went way down last night due to this I'm sure.

Yeah I changed my to alt 2. I understand that default is probably great for single player, but probably not so much for multiplayer since there is no cover system.

^ I concur with this. How difficult is it really? Street Fighter II did it way back in the day for SNES.

I switched the controls to Alt 2 for matching COD4 before I played the game the first time. It must have helped, because I can consistently finish in the top 3 out of 32 almost every game, and I was a mediocre to below average COD player. I was still doing just as well last night even on boards where half the people were flying around on hovercrafts or dressed up as saboteurs.

I still have a lot of leveling up to do.

Quote :

since the aiming stays on just by tapping L1 once, all you have to do is roll your finger down the pad from L1 to L2 and you can go into a quick duck and snipe mode. When you're ready to take off running again, just tap square twice really quick and the scope comes down.

I'm loving the tactical light on the shotgun. It definitely makes it easier to identify when you're aiming center mass on someone when turning a corner in a hallway really quick.

I wonder if it whitewashes the opponents screen when you shine it at them at close range?

Head's up, patch up today. Seems like mostly minor/major bug fixes, no actual new content.

Quote :
"Below is a list of fixes included in this patch. There is no new content or new features, but the list is pretty expansive. Check it out:

Stability issue regarding randomly named games resolved.

Stability fix when rapidly tapping (X) can cause crash on spawn-select.

Stability issue regarding Saboteur’s disguise ability resolved.

Stability fix on ‘Creating game’ with a blank name.

Stability fix for repeatedly entering exiting game.

The Ignore list functionality corrected.

Unlock of “Frontrunner” Medal now functioning correctly.

Fix for incorrect award of win to clan not showing for game resolved.

Battle Replay for Corinth Crossing not appearing correctly on http://www.killzone.com.

Issue with not being able to defuse the Search and Destroy objective resolved.

HUD issue correction during Assassination mode when playing as a Medic.

Controller input tweaks and modifications.

Fix for auto-lock on of shotgun exploit.

Fix for D-Charge issues in Campaign mode."

The bolded could be a big deal. Some people on the forums are saying it feels much better to them, others are saying it feels exactly the same. It's only been out a couple hours so I'm going to say placebo effect until more people get their hands on it (including myself). I have personally gotten very comfortable with the controls. Aiming from medium to long range feels fine. I still have trouble with close quarters combat, but I've never been able to aim worth a damn with a controller anyway.

Yeah I'm interested to see what about the controls have been tweaked, but I seriously doubt its anything significant as I would imagine it would take a whole lot of testing and balancing before releasing. GG even stated this when talking about this patch earlier:

Quote :
"Controller Issues -- We have not stopped looking into the complaints and will see what we can do about it. Any possible changes will have to be carefully implemented and tested before being deployed though."

I just found out about the shotgun glitch yesterday. I definitely enjoyed it yesterday, but I am glad that its gone and everyone is on the same level. I knew there was something up with those guys killing me with shotguns so quickly.

I hope they don't change anything about the actual gameplay of the controller. The only thing I'd like to see changed is the delay between hitting the buttons to join a game or switch to the different home menu tabs and the actual occurance on the system.

I wouldn't call KZ2 spray and pray at all. The online gunplay reminds me a lot of Counter-Strike, but with much better hit detection and netcode (which are the two things that made CS unbearable to me). Recoil is very prevalent on all the weapons so firing in short bursts is necessary to have any kind of accuracy. And then you throw in the class system and it's really a different experience then any other shooter I've played online. There are definitely balance issues but they've got a good base. The only thing that takes getting used to is the "weighty" feel to the aiming, but after a while you barely notice it anymore.

6 Yeah I agree with a lot of that. I don't know what you mean about poor netcode in CS though. That game seemed like it was perfect when playing online and damn was it balanced. Still my favorite online multiplayer game ever, but probably has a lot to do with just how long it lasted. I played that game for years.

Killzone is really growing on me though. After playing it for a long time and then playing COD4, COD4 just looks so bland in comparison. Gameplay has always been the most important factor to me, but I think this is one of those games where graphics actually affect the gameplay. Terrific game, I'll be playing it for a long time I'm sure.

Picked it up yesterday and I'm impressed but Gears of War has already blazed most of these trails. Very pleased with the AI. The pistol seems pretty worthless to me thus far, sluggish with a small capacity. With the cover based gameplay and close quarters combat combined with a less reliable long range accuracy of all guns vs other fps I am loving the shotgun.
