yeah, my dad used to have a Niger Trigger. He had to give that away too because it tried to kill everything he put in the tank. They can get REALLY aggressive. I couldn't take the Trigger at the time because i had a lot of smaller fish in my tank and he would have probably taken them all out within 48 hours

Niger Trigger

Triggerfish are probably my favorite saltwater fish. There are MANY varieties and most of them are all kinds of crazy colors. But like I said, they are pretty agressive, so you have to be careful what other fish you have in the tank with them.

Triggers get pretty big in the wild too. They must be pretty tasty too, because people fish for them and eat them

FOR PAGE 2!!

Quote :
"Many of you know that my Dad passed away this past September. Well, about 2 years before he died he gave me his 1 year-old Lionfish because it was destroying his reef tank. I have had him ever since. He has since outgrown his tank, so I decided to donate him to the Natural Science Center in Greensboro in memory of my Father. My nephews and neice go up there at least once a week, so I figured it would be so nice for them to show all of their friends "Pappy's Fish".

I dropped him off today, and he now has a permanent home in their Aquatics exhibit as their ONLY Lionfish. There will also be a plaque placed on the exhibit that reads: "Donated in Loving Memory of Rick Stine" (My Dad). If you are from Greensboro, live in Greensboro, or are ever visiting Greensboro, please go by and check him out!

glad he found a good home, and that you finally realized he is a russels

i'm suprised their 12 year old volitan was smaller than your guy. The volitan we've got at the shop is getting to be about as big as yours and he's doubled in size sinze we threw him in the 340 last aug and he keeps growing.

^^ Well their tank is only 180, and the NCS had 3 in there at one point and 2 for a while so I can only assume that limited their growth.

dont they still take a lot of saltwater aquarium fish from the wild? that weighs too heavily on my conscience to ever keep a saltwater tank. they are cute little buggers though.

^ there have been lionfish spotted off the outer banks. they are a nuisance fish at this point. Most people think they ended up of our shores and the shores of other US states as "stowaways" on Asian ships.

And damn gunzz, now I would DEFINITELY not stick my hand in that tank. That motherfucker is full of shit that will fuck your day up

^^ Still waiting for an official judgement call from the curator at the NCS, but I think I was wrong.

Ernie is pretty cool...you can actually hand feed these guys but you do have to be careful not to get bit.

hes very shy and like to hide but lately he has been coming out of his cave late in the day and yesterday he stuck his head out of the water twice. he is about 2.5 feet long

you should probably learn what kind of fish you have. That is not a volitans lion, that is russel's lion and if he's 9 inches then I'd say he's full grown since they only reach about 12 inches max in the wild. did you also already talk to the Gboro place? a lot of places won't take fish anymore

I maintain that aquarium. We are going to be trimming the puffers teeth tuesday if anyone wants to watch, lol.

I'll get some full shots of the tank up sometime since I redid it.

dude, it is way better now. The zoo is pretty badass for such a small little area. They have 2 tigers, a whole den of meerkats, alligators, several types of monkeys, and they just finished their new wolf exhibit. That motherfucker has an anteater in it, and when I was there I totally got the "FUCK YOU, I'M AN ANTEATER!" look.

and according to Rick, they just got a grant for $several million to build a new aquatics center.

hahahahhahahah that made me laugh.

a friend of mine in college used to work at a pet store and i would go visit him. they had this angel fish who my friend thought was retarded and missing half it's brain because it swam upside down. my friend used to try to get me to buy it because he said the fish reminded him of me

my best friend has a couple of freshwater fish and one night i decided to name all of them. well the only names i remember were of 2 of the fish who looked pretty much identical. they're names are "mary kate" and "ashley." naturally, the mary kate fish is the skinnier one

and back on topic: djeternal, that is really cool you donated the fish. i'm glad to hear he's doing so well!

There are some real beaut's in this thread. We had a roomate who had a nice aquarium setup. There was a mini sawfish/stingray looking thing, I guess you call it an angel shark. Anyway, long story short something got into the tank and diseased all the fish and made them all turn up dead one afternoon. The owner of the tank started to cry which was funny because you rarely get to see a fat man cry. I couldn't hold back so I went into the other room out of respect for the poor guy, so he could be alone. He said he raised them from birth lol.

btw, I had nothing to do with the death of these fishes. I love fishes.

I had a really nice fish only set up for about 2 years when I was still in college. I probably had close to $1000 invested in it. One night my roommate had a party when I wasn't home and someone thought it would be funny to pour a beer in the tank to "get the fish drunk". You can imagine the outcome, and yes I beat my roommates ass.

Way to go, man. I worked/volunteered at the NSC for years, including in the aquatics section. They'll take good care of him.

The center has had a lot of luck lately, what with the new zoo (which is awesome), a large collection of animal exhibits from a hunter just got donated recently, they're getting more money thrown at them, and of course, this fish.

^ yeah, Rick told me they are getting several $million to build a new aquatic center. but it's not going to be an aquarium really, more like a center devoted to water conservation and info on our lakes and streams. he said there will be some fish there, but nothing major.
