page 2yeah, my dad used to have a Niger Trigger. He had to give that away too because it tried to kill everything he put in the tank. They can get REALLY aggressive. I couldn't take the Trigger at the time because i had a lot of smaller fish in my tank and he would have probably taken them all out within 48 hours[Edited on February 26, 2009 at 9:53 AM. Niger TriggerTriggerfish are probably my favorite saltwater fish. There are MANY varieties and most of them are all kinds of crazy colors. But like I said, they are pretty agressive, so you have to be careful what other fish you have in the tank with them.
2/26/2009 9:59:10 AM
that last picture of the clown trigger ... we had one of those little guys and that SOB was a bad ass.i named him billy as in billy bad asswe had to take him out b/c even at about 2 inches long he killed 2 fish
2/26/2009 10:00:52 AM
Triggers get pretty big in the wild too. They must be pretty tasty too, because people fish for them and eat them[Edited on February 26, 2009 at 10:01 AM. Reason : a]
2/26/2009 10:01:37 AM
yeah man i've been to several places that serve trigger. i think we have 4 different types of triggers since i've been here ... they are really cool fish except when they want to dig up the tank

That's really awesome!
2/26/2009 12:12:19 PM
glad he found a good home, and that you finally realized he is a russels i'm suprised their 12 year old volitan was smaller than your guy. The volitan we've got at the shop is getting to be about as big as yours and he's doubled in size sinze we threw him in the 340 last aug and he keeps growing.
2/26/2009 12:22:49 PM
2/26/2009 12:26:55 PM
^^ Well their tank is only 180, and the NCS had 3 in there at one point and 2 for a while so I can only assume that limited their growth.
2/26/2009 2:18:51 PM
this is Ernie, our new Morey
2/27/2009 3:13:09 PM
so there was some argument over what type of lionfish it was - were you right or wrong?
2/27/2009 3:14:03 PM
dont they still take a lot of saltwater aquarium fish from the wild? that weighs too heavily on my conscience to ever keep a saltwater tank. they are cute little buggers though.
2/27/2009 3:24:45 PM
^ there have been lionfish spotted off the outer banks. they are a nuisance fish at this point. Most people think they ended up of our shores and the shores of other US states as "stowaways" on Asian ships. And damn gunzz, now I would DEFINITELY not stick my hand in that tank. That motherfucker is full of shit that will fuck your day up^^ Still waiting for an official judgement call from the curator at the NCS, but I think I was wrong.[Edited on February 27, 2009 at 3:28 PM. ^I think she's talking about saltwater fish in general, not just lionfish.
2/27/2009 3:32:30 PM
Ernie is pretty cool...you can actually hand feed these guys but you do have to be careful not to get bit.hes very shy and like to hide but lately he has been coming out of his cave late in the day and yesterday he stuck his head out of the water twice. he is about 2.5 feet long
2/27/2009 3:36:04 PM
you should probably learn what kind of fish you have. That is not a volitans lion, that is russel's lion and if he's 9 inches then I'd say he's full grown since they only reach about 12 inches max in the wild. did you also already talk to the Gboro place? a lot of places won't take fish anymore[Edited on February 27, 2009 at 3:39 PM. dude, it is way better now. The zoo is pretty badass for such a small little area. They have 2 tigers, a whole den of meerkats, alligators, several types of monkeys, and they just finished their new wolf exhibit. That motherfucker has an anteater in it, and when I was there I totally got the "FUCK YOU, I'M AN ANTEATER!" look.and according to Rick, they just got a grant for $several million to build a new aquatics center.[Edited on February 27, 2009 at 6:17 PM. yay lionfish!
2/27/2009 6:29:15 PM
we had a few tangs...they are good fish. I don't think they get along with triggers well though
2/27/2009 6:30:32 PM
I had a tang back in the day. i named him Wu

There are some real beaut's in this thread. We had a roomate who had a nice aquarium setup. There was a mini sawfish/stingray looking thing, I guess you call it an angel shark. Anyway, long story short something got into the tank and diseased all the fish and made them all turn up dead one afternoon. The owner of the tank started to cry which was funny because you rarely get to see a fat man cry. I couldn't hold back so I went into the other room out of respect for the poor guy, so he could be alone. He said he raised them from birth lol.btw, I had nothing to do with the death of these fishes. I love fishes.
2/27/2009 10:27:21 PM
^Sounds like a new fish was introduced and an Oodinium outbreak happened if it was that sudden.
2/28/2009 9:20:49 AM
I had a really nice fish only set up for about 2 years when I was still in college. I probably had close to $1000 invested in it. One night my roommate had a party when I wasn't home and someone thought it would be funny to pour a beer in the tank to "get the fish drunk". You can imagine the outcome, and yes I beat my roommates ass.
2/28/2009 10:06:28 AM
^ i've got about $2000 in Acanthastrea alone in my 75 now... if one of my room mates messed it up I'd go fucking crazy
2/28/2009 10:11:34 AM
And take into account that i was a broke college kid, so $1000 was a shit ton of money to me then.
2/28/2009 10:21:26 AM
^ i'm a grad student working 2 jobs
2/28/2009 10:25:06 AM
yeah, who am I kidding? $1000 is a ton of money to me now
2/28/2009 10:34:18 AM
it's an expensive hobby. I've had so many fish died on me and I've only done freshwater.

Way to go, man. I worked/volunteered at the NSC for years, including in the aquatics section. They'll take good care of him.The center has had a lot of luck lately, what with the new zoo (which is awesome), a large collection of animal exhibits from a hunter just got donated recently, they're getting more money thrown at them, and of course, this fish.
3/2/2009 12:59:08 AM
^ yeah, Rick told me they are getting several $million to build a new aquatic center. but it's not going to be an aquarium really, more like a center devoted to water conservation and info on our lakes and streams. he said there will be some fish there, but nothing major.
3/2/2009 5:44:53 PM
They're really good eating also, according to the article below at least. Need to go catch me some lionfish. Doing my part in saving the native species. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/health_science/story/1495524.html

I need to go take a new picture of him. It is amazing how much he has grown and how colorful he is under their lighting.
4/24/2009 11:42:23 AM
so the bigger tank gave him room to grow or what?
