I used to live about 5 minutes away from New Belgium Brewery (or a 2 minute ride on your cruiser bike). While their beers are excellent (1554 especially), there are much better colorado beers. If you can get your hands on anything brewed by Odells, you'll find its infinitely better. New Belgium does contribute a lot to the city of Fort Collins, their brewery is amazing, so i love them.

nobody that actually knows anything about beer is going to tell you that New Belgium is the best brewery in Colorado, and Colorado isn't even one of the best states as far as local breweries are concerned (Michigan, California, and Oregon come to mind), but New Belgium wasn't available here before yesterday so there is understandably some hype and anticipation regarding their beers even if they aren't that great.

I think the New Belgium beers are great beers. I will admit that it may have something to do with the nostalgia associated with going out to Colorado on snowboarding trips to Breck, and drinking Fat Tire out there. But I also remember the first time I had it years ago was in San Antonio and I remember thinking how good it was, and I had never heard of it at that point.

1554 is still my fav. dark beer of all time, especially on draft.

I never said Fat Tire or any other New Belgium beer was the best beer of all time. It is good though, and I'm happy it will be a part of my selection here in Raleigh now.

My dad lives in Fort Collins.

had it last night at the saucer here in raleigh. it was the debut night for it, got to keep the bottle too.

im not a fan of IPAs but this beer was pretty damn good, it was $8 but its in a 22oz bottle, i must say it was kinda worth it for all the hype and hell its almost the size of two beers.

would drink again, going again tonight to get the pint glass

Thursday is the release party @ the Charlotte Saucer... show up at 5, be one of the first 100 or so, and get a free glass

i can relate. i guy with whom i work has been best friends with the guy since youth and used to ride fat tires with him around CO state during college.

Perhaps he just got a lot of requests from people a few degrees of separation and decided to distribute here rather than just keep sending random boxes.

ha

I bought 22oz bottles at the grocery store for like 3 bucks. (I got to keep the bottle too!)
Not an IPA, but i'm sure it was a brainfart.
Wednesdays are pint nights.

This is kind of like when Coors was only available in Colorado and people used to fly out there with empty suitcases to bring it back to the east coat, it's decent beer but no better than half of the other thousands of brands already on sale in NC

That said, I fill my trunk to the brim with 12 packs of Sweetwater 420 everytime I go to my lake house in the mountains

Saucer just made some big fuss about it a few weeks ago, and I think I might've seen it at the Harris Teeter @ 49 and Harris

^that was for a 22. and Flying Saucer is overpriced on a lot of their beers. (but they do have good prices on some of their other beers)

if you had actually read the post you are referring to you would realize that it was a 22oz bottle and not a pint, big bottles are always pretty expensive at a bar no matter where you go.

I've been wanting to try this, but not sure it will be my thing. I had the sunshine wheat before but I can't get into those wheat fruity beers, and I think I had the 1554 on tap once but my beer palette wasn't very sophisticated at the time and I couldn't get into it. I'll give it another shot.

Ugh, I know that... I like the Sierra craft brews better than New Belgium (I should have obviously written the brewery rather than just Fat Tire -- I didn't look at this thread again though) is what I meant...

you should try Avery's stuff if you prefer hop-heavy breweries

they had one of their owners/creators come to raleigh for a private beer tasting, and I got tickets to it- they are very heavy-hop heads... they had some stuff I really liked (more of the higher % alcohol stuff) as well as some stuff that I didn't like too much (it was good, but I prefer a milder hop taste). They even brought some stuff in that was technically illegal to sell here in NC that put me on my ass

all in all, a good brewery, and I'm sure they will have something that will be of great interest to ya
