well there is a slight bug in your logic, but i definitely get what you're saying.(i.e. terminal velocity - frictional losses to the snow - wind friction.....)
5/28/2009 2:45:27 PM
Decreased drag because of the thin atmosphere is a plus.
5/28/2009 2:46:03 PM
if i was gonna climb that shit i would take a hang glider.LONGESTRIDEEVER
5/28/2009 2:48:21 PM
This thread has gotten me interested in looking at photos of dead climbers. Weird.

how do cavemen last 10,000 years relatively well in snow/ice and these guys are down to the bones?
5/28/2009 6:41:48 PM
5/28/2009 6:55:47 PM
It just depends on how long they were exposed to the elements before being frozen. Also, sometimes the body moves and thaws and refreezes.
5/28/2009 6:57:35 PM
5/28/2009 7:02:37 PM
It depends on the exposure. George Mallory's body was very well presevered when it was discovered 80 years later.

The death rate for Mount Everest climbers is, 1 death for every 10 successful summits ... If I remember right, about 5% of all people that attempt it die.
5/28/2009 7:16:22 PM
^from your math, it sounds like 10% die, not 5.
5/28/2009 7:30:01 PM
i read earlier that last year 513 made it and only 7 died
5/28/2009 7:33:27 PM
those pics are surreal
5/28/2009 7:35:41 PM
The stats improve from year to year as people have a better understanding of what kind of gear is necessary.
5/28/2009 7:36:16 PM
^4 Or half of the people that attempt it turn back and aren't "successful".V he got it. [Edited on May 28, 2009 at 7:37 PM. Reason : .]

^^^^^successful attempts =/= all attempts^[Edited on May 28, 2009 at 7:37 PM. Reason : late]
5/28/2009 7:36:49 PM
If you're stupid enough to try to climb a really tall and dangerous mountain for no damn reason, you're the only that knowingly put your life at such a risk. At that point it's not up to one of the other dumb assholes trying to climb the mountain to save you.
5/28/2009 7:37:48 PM
^^^ I wasn't clear. 10% deaths to successful summits ratio. 5% deaths to attempts ratio.

How come not one of you nasty bastards thought that one dead guy was jerking it when he died?
5/28/2009 8:54:46 PM
I'd assume that one can fight of hypothermia by jerking off hard.
5/28/2009 9:25:46 PM
That would suck, it would be like getting a handjob from frosty the snowman
5/28/2009 9:40:54 PM
all of those pics look like escapable situations. they aren't even buried deep.

Maybe Mount Everest is haunted?
5/29/2009 3:07:55 AM
or maybe the Nepalese government doesn't feel obligated to have a fleet of helicopters on standby to rescue dumb ass foreign tourists from their own stupiditysadly it seems a New Zealand avionics corporation is designing an unmanned drone for Everest rescues, thus eliminating yet another satisfying source of Darwinistic realization in today's increasingly dull world[Edited on May 29, 2009 at 3:23 AM. jesus man, did an everest climber steal your girlfriend or something?
5/29/2009 3:43:32 AM
I'd love to see an escalator and observation deck (with food court) installed at the summit in my lifetime.
5/29/2009 3:56:27 AM
and a gift shop too

bttt.i picked up a hardback copy of Into Thin Air this weekend at the local Goodwill. The book was in mint condition, as if it never got read. I'm about 80 pages in and hooked. Its great.
6/1/2009 9:48:31 AM
I've been meaning to read that at some point.I was amazed that I manged to burn through Into the Wild in barely two days.
6/1/2009 2:24:41 PM
i'm a tv junky, but with the primetime season over i can actually devote more time to reading. I imagine i'll finish ITA by the end of the week and then i've got 2 more in my queue
6/1/2009 2:31:06 PM
^^Yet another story about someone who died trying to do something that they were completely unprepared for. Had the dumbass brought a map and compass, the first two items on any wilderness excursion packing list, he would have survived.
6/1/2009 2:37:44 PM
^ Agreed. What's the point of going to Alaska to "rough it" and then setting up camp a few miles from the highway?

But still leave the mountain open to climbers. That way I can hang out at the Sbarro and talk shit to all of them as soon as they reach the summit.
6/1/2009 2:46:52 PM
someone like you wouldn't go there, even if it was that easy
