I haven't read the thread or honestly even the whole OP, but Luciana Alana ____ ____ sounds great to me. This would definitely depend on the last names, but as long as the flow is maintained I would go with that.

The big problem with Luciana Alana is that there are two A's back to back, so either the two are going to blend (lucianalana) when spoken, or there's going to have to be an awkward, unnatural pause between the first and middle names. Obviously the same goes for any other middle name beginning in "A."

I'd also suggest staying away from names that are affiliated with commercial brands (Allegra, Seiko).

Marie is a pretty common middle name for girls in America. Where you currently live or plan to live in the future, obviously, I can't say, but if you're looking for something a little more unique that won't fly in the estados unidos.

My personal vote is for Sophia/Sofia or Zara.

---

I have to admit a certain degree of curiosity about a lot of the name choices. The kid is already mixed between Middle Eastern/South Asian and English (I'm assuming white, could well be wrong). She's going to have a mixed last name. Just feels to me like throwing a Spanish/Latin/Japanese/French/Russian middle name into the mix is just going to be...confusing.

Percival Mutobo Yamamoto-Nguyen might face identity issues growing up. Same could happen to Luciana Yoshiko Wellington-Mustafa, is all I'm saying. (Just throwing out stereotypical examples with the last names, I don't actually know what 0EP or his lady are called) A person's name is tied inexorably to their identity.

Sorry if I'm coming off like a dick, I promise I'm not trying. I'm also very proud of the wolfweb for not having suggested "bin laden" already. Anyway, congrats on reproducing. Remember: when you introduce her to the wolfweb, don't prepare her for it at all. They have to learn to sink or swim on their own.

Personally, I'm a fan of Isolde, plus its a pretty cool story that she can read about later in life. Although I think it's french, so it might break the spanish/italian thing you've got going on there.

And these I like just for the sounds they make:
Vera, Valeria, Soleil, Verona, Vivienne

Alright, so we have 4 weeks to name her. I was under the impression that you are not allowed to leave the hospital until you name the child, because it has to go on the birth cert, and the birth cert has to be issued before you leave.

Maybe it is like that in the US? I saw it in the movie "The Namesake", with that Indian Kal Pen dude from teen movies. And the UK being the dad of the US (), I though the rules would be the same.

So anyway, I am relieved. Keep it coming, and when I travel on next Sunday, I will review the whole thread again. Some good suggestions and advice in here. That's the reason I made the thread... I mean, for example, we might still go with Allegra, but at least I will know full well that it is a medication (I knew it already, but it had slipped my mind... mostly because AFAIK it is not sold under that brand name in the rest of the world, only in the US).

It seems like some trolls have crept into this thread. That's expected, cuz it is chit chat, so I will just ignore them completely. Some comments:

Quote :
"All of those are horrible."
Quote :
"I didn't read all the choices."

I see.

Quote :
"I don't know if this means anything OEPII1 but my best friend, who is due in June, is naming her kid Luciana."

Wow... that's a pretty cool coincidence. Even though that's not a 'weird' name, it is not common at all. Maybe in Italy/Spain/South America it is, but not in the US or outside of those regions.

Quote :
"just think that whatever you name your kid, take into account that it may be a name they hate.

a few of my friends & myself HATE our first names, so you gotta factor that in.

i always tell myself that i will not give my kid a name that he/she will hate when they get old enough to think for themselves"

So you can tell the future? Can I enlist your services?

Quote :
"go with alana and tell your kid you named her after me"

Ha! I just looked it up, and it is actually the feminine version of Alan... I didn't know that! It is of Celtic origin.

Quote :
"I had a friend who was calling people from the hospital announcing his new son, "Nicholas Richard ...", when someone said, "Oh, yeah, Nick the Dick" ... They quickly changed the name."

Hahaha... funny story. We are aware that some names can be changed into derogatory or sexual words, and definitely excluding those.

Quote :
"Imogen?? Is that a hard or soft "g?"

Soft g, as in genetic. And being into cars, I know what you are going for with "Imola Red"... but perhaps "Imola Rouge" would be better Believe it or not, Imola was on my original list, but not on this revised one, because I didn't find the name anywhere (for a person's name), so I dropped it.

GrumpyGOP, your post deserves/needs a separate response, so I will do that tomorrow or day after.

Thanks to ambrosia for the following site... it is amazing:

You can tell.

Names like Matt(hew), Ben(jamin), Jason, Andrew, Christ(opher)...these will be fine for a very long time. Names like Aloysius, Ernest, Donald, Gerald...not as much.

The fads in male names change much more slowly than in women's, so a 'bad' name is much worse than a 'bad' female name.

My name - Christine - isn't so common in younger women...but it's not a bad name. A name like Signe might raise some eyebrows (in the US), but it's not as bad as, say, Helga.

Just think about the most worthless, cruelest people you've ever met. Would they have made fun of the name in middle school?

^^^ I get your point, and her point as well, but still, it doesn't say much.

Even if no one makes fun of Helga bc of her name, she might still hate it because of the way it sounds or what it means (don't know what it means, just saying).

And on the flip side, someone might be called 'dick' for half their life bc their name is Richard, but they might love their name dearly for whatever reason (history, heritage, meaning, sound, etc).

So, it is hard to predict.

Yes, for some names you can pretty much say that they will hate it and/or will be made fun of, with a high degree of certainty.

But for a lot of names, it is hard to tell. Argenta? Avellina? Blanca? Consuela? Fiorenza? Imogen? Kimama? Midori? Mirabelle? Pinquana? Soleil? Ursula? Verona? Yoshiko?

Can you (or anybody here) tell if a child would hate it if they were named one of those, for example? Or if they would be made fun of, or their name mutilated/distorted?

I can't.

^^ Thanks.

You do not have to name your baby before leaving the hospital. If you do not name your child in a certain amount of time, the birth certificate will be recorded as something generic like "Baby Girl" or "Baby Girl Smith." It is nice to have a name before you leave the hospital because the hospital can file all of the papers for you. But you can go home with a nameless baby.

I have a friend whose mother took nearly a month to name his little brother.

Don't waste time trying to pick names that are impossible to mock or mutilate. A lot of kids are assholes. They're going to make fun of her about something at some point, it's impossible to stop. All you can do is not make a choice that's so incredibly easy to make fun of that people are guaranteed to do it her whole life.

Most of those names don't seem to lend themselves to such ease of mockery, so you're probably safe.

Haha, you have a Japanese middle name? How come?!

Anyway, I like it, but your point is a good one and it is valid. I am not up to speed with video games at all, and half up to speed with movie and tv program characters, so that's the advice I am looking for.

Some people are giving that advice (as you did), but others are simply saying stuff like RAWR RAWR THOSE NAMES ARE HORRIBLE... or, THOSE NAMES WILL BE MADE FUN OF... or, you get my point.

If you make an assertion, back it up, like Fgkukhawgades did

Which is why I like Marie. My middle name, and my mother's, btw

First son: William Thomas (first name of each paternal grandfather; lots of nicknames available)
First daughter: we haven't really decided. William Thomas is just such a no-brainer

Names I do want to use for our children: Michelle, Elizabeth, Sarah, Anne, Abraham, Elise, Britta, Katherine, Adelheid, Caleb, Daniel, Kevin, Jacob.

My name is long and formal. They are all family names, and my last name doesn't fit on most credit card receipts, and barely on a credit card.

I was at a gas station or something recently, and the cashier was making "polite" small talk. "gosh you have a long name!!" "you must not be from around here....?"

"my family has been in the area since the mid 1700's...."

"ooh? You don't sound like it!?"

"Not all southerners have a deep drawl ..."

"Well your name is awfully long for a southern name. A good southern name would be Jimmy Matt Roberts (or somethign)."

"Those are all nicknames, and short for other more formal names....."

"Oh, well you just have a long name!"

"ok."
