in person, it's kind of a blobby, nondescript, not particularly-very-interesting car. Unfortunately for the genesis, the hyundai dealer here is also a mazda dealer, and next to a mazdaspeed 3, new miata, and rx-8, the genesis looked very "looks fast" in the same way a celica used to. Sure it's got a lot more sheer muscle than those 3, and I have to admit its not a bad drive at all, but those cars are just a lot more fun in general. And I don't even really like the restyled rx8 that much. Even the MZ3. They just... at least look PURPOSEFUL.

I remember when I was in elementary school and middle school, one of the notions that all the car rags would throw around ad nauseam was the idea of a car looking SO much better in person than even in pictures. Now, I was in 5th grade in 1992, and when I first saw a Dodge Stealth Turbo at Al Smith Buick-Dodge-Mazda, that was exactly what I thought. And when I first saw a ferrari 512TR on the beltline a year or two later. That seems to have worn off, and maybe that's just because my sense of perception got better or something, but I can honestly say that the hyundai genesis is the first car I can ever recall thinking, "man, that just looks fantastic" in print, and then TOTALLY yawnworthy in the metal. Kind of a neat trick, hyundai. like a muffintop on an anorexic chick.

^^^I hadn't really heard about this, so I looked it up... there is no change in engine specs, which i figured would have been a part of the deal (along with the wheels and seats they throw in there...)

also, didn't realize the mpg was so bad for those things (supposedly 16/22...)

Car & Driver did a sports coupe comparo last month and their RX8 averaged 14mpg for the duration of their test. There is no excuse for that, not even close. And it isn't fast by any means. The Mazdaspeed 3 and Mazdaspeed 6 (to a lesser extent) smoke it. Not to mention in that 4 car comparo it was the slowest car, but far.

I'm going to have to (respectably) COMPLETELY disagree with you. I saw one at the NY Auto show last year and it was fucking sweet. It wasn't up on some pedestal, it was right there I could walk around it and touch it (but not sit in it). It's a good looking car. Just a giant shame its not 2-300lbs lighter.

The problem is that, under Ford control, Mazda had to put that engine in a very heavy chassis relative to the older nonturbo Rx cars. The new 09 models are even heavier, and so their final drive ratio is something like 4.5:1 or so to make up the acceleration. So they turn a lot of rpms all the time which hurts gas mileage. I have typically gotten about 16-17mpg in 2nd and 3rd gen turbo Rx-7's from moderate driving, and around 12 if I'm beating on it all the time. Highway is usually about 23 on those cars.

The new Rx-8 or Rx-9 or whatever they plan to call it should be noticeably more fuel efficient due to a lighter chassis and direct injection.

Anyway, saw a comparo between the Genesis Coupe, Mustang V6, and Camaro V6 (and Challenger V6?) in one of the mags and they crowned the Genesis... that's pretty impressive considering the other 3, especially the Mustang, have been in production for decades.

I see them in person regularly, and they look pretty hot.

What they need to do is drop the Genesis V8 sedan's V8 into the Coupe for 400 hp!

It's especially surprising the Genesis won since it's 2-3 years old now. Although, the lack of IRS on the Mustang and how heavy the Camaro is might have something to do with it.

429 hp V8 Genesis? They originally kept the V8 out of the coupe to make it exclusive to the sedan. It would be nice if this ends up being true. Competition is good.

I was going to mention the rumors about the coupe getting a 5.0 V8 to compete with the Mustang GT. I also wonder if they'll consider putting the uprated 2.0T engine in and phasing out the 210hp version. Seems like it'd make more sense to use the 274hp unit. That'd be a tempting car given the lower weight and price.

Hyundai just released their Sonota sedan with a direct injection 2.0 liter inline 4 turbo engine. 274hp and 35mpg apparently.

Since the Genesis coupe comes with a 2.0 liter turbo four I can see them tossing it in favor of the new engine (though I realize they'd need to make some changes since the first application is FWD and the coupe is RWD).

The 2.0 model is such a waste. I'm not spending that kind of money on a car that pulls a 6.8 second 0-60. Like, really?

While they've done respectable against the field, I can't see getting the v6 over a CPO 370Z or 135i.

My beef with the car is that it is too heavy. Of course it has a rear seat while the 370Z does not. As far as the 2.0T base engine, you can crank that baby up to 300hp with hardly effort at all (but would throw away the car's 100k mile warranty, blah).

seriously hyundai is making some nice cars... is it the best nahh not really but its in the 90th percentile and when you factor in how cheap they are they're doing good...

not to mention you can get brembos on both the 4 banger and the v6


and you could always throw the rear seat and spare tire away... that doesn't void the warranty

^ and its heavy cause they've been toying with the genesis sedan's v8 from the start which means the chassis will need its strength later.
