downtown Manteo. there's a store there (can't remember the name but it's right next to poor richard's across the street from the old court house) that rents kayaks and it's a pretty nice, scenic, calm place to paddle around.

there's also pea island wildlife refuge, which is pretty popular.

Z is all "OH NOES OCEAN ITS NOT CALM AND STILL!"
(he likes flat, calm, almost still water, and taking things slow and easy. I'm game for getting out on the ocean, even though it'd be cold)

I already have up kittyhawkwatersports, http://barrierislandkayaks.com , http://www.outerbanks.org/activities/water_activities/outer_banks_kayaking_and_canoeing.asp , http://www.grogswatersports.com/ , and http://www.theoutdoorsinn.com/

poking around

d7, thanks.
Roanoke island is something else we're looking at. I think I'd prefer pea island, though.

Yesterday, Z and I went whitewater rafting (first time ever!) (on the ocoee, and beardawg61 was guide), and holy shit
that was fun

And now...Z is going 'hmmm...I wonder how much kayaks cost?' He saw how much fun the kayaks were having, and now seems to be reconsidering his canoe-or-nothing stance
