That quote should've concluded this thread. If you don't like your job, quit. I suppose you also think everyone should bring a bottle of 409 and some rags into the McDonalds bathroom with them to clean up after themselves too...

do your job or let someone else who actually needs one have it

If someone took a dump on the floor of the McDonald's bathroom instead of in the toilet because they felt the toilet was too far away, then yeah, they ought to have to deal with it.

I'm saying, nobody is bitching about people that put their carts where they are supposed to go.

It's okay to litter because it's someone's job to pick it up.
It's okay to dump chemicals in the water system because it's someone's job to clean it up.
It's okay to perform animal sacrifice in the Brickyard because it's someone's job to clear away the blood and guts.

The argument is you don't have to do something because someone gets paid to do it. So I'll just litter rather than taking the 10 steps to the trash can next time. Someone gets paid to pick it up right?

I'm glad I don't a) shop where you people shop and b) don't have a car that will get hit by your shopping carts.

-If you're at a McDonald's, you're supposed to clean your own shit up. Leaving your try at the table is shitty.
-If you're at Bennigan's, you're supposed to leave your plates on the table. Putting them on the floor or something would be a shitty thing to do.

Nobody is bitching about people that put their carts up like they are supposed to. You're gonna be hard pressed to find an example where being a lazy jackass is the accepted norm.

For the people that don't put the carts back...

Where did you grow up? I've never been to a town where people just leave their carts any old place and expect the store to corral them up for you. Of course I might just be projecting my upbringing onto every place I've been.

I'm accustomed to at least putting them in the designated area. Of course the employees should go after the strays, there are always lazy people, but when the 'strays' become the norm - man I feel for society.

Maybe I should scatter the dishes in random seats throughout the restaurant instead of leaving them on the table where they belong.

I don't think the employees are being lazy...they do send people out to collect the stray carts every so often. But with the volume that store does, plus the number of lazy shoppers who leave the carts any old place, unless they paid someone to basically patrol the lot and collect carts, you're going to get more lying around pretty quick after the last sweep.

Quote :
"If I feel that the store has overpriced merchandise then I will not help to bag my groceries, nor will I go out of my way to return the carts. I will certainly make sure that the carts are not rolling around in the parking lot, though."

I won't help to bag the groceries either, usually...I think that's the cashier's or the bagger's job and is built into the price of the merchandise. However, I think it's more a common courtesy to return the carts, just so they're not getting in people's way or running the risk of damaging cars. Making sure they're not rolling around is a step in the right direction though (I presume you're doing this by putting them up on one of the islands at the end of each aisle or something?)

I guess it boils down to this: you think it is the customer's responsibility to return carts. I do not.

Nothing you can say will convince me to the contrary and nothing I can say will convince you.

^ Yes, that's right. I just pop them up onto the little island area. Obviously its not courteous to the other customers to leave them rolling around. I don't care about being courteous to the employees... I'm paying them to run around and collect the carts, after all.

1. i don't often use a cart, but the many times i've been at the CV HT i've seen the people who come out to collect the carts tell people pushing them back in to leave them there and that someone will collect them later. I suppose they consider it an offered service. I think this is akin to asking people who go to bojangles why they leave their trash on the table?

2. No its not that hard, but if the employees are going to go as far to tell you to stop doing it, then why should you. You could state decency, and I wouldn't argue that point, but if they're suggesting you shouldn't then one who leaves it out isn't doing anything wrong.

3. parking spaces are incredibly retarded spots to leave carts and those people should be drug out to oberlin and whipped.

the prices at harris teeter really aren't that high...

also, you can be even nicer by actually taking your cart back inside... i always do this (and grab any stray ones you lazy wankers left that i encounter along the way) and i've had lots of baggers thank me.

it doesn't matter if it's your "responsibility" or not - it comes down to the fact that leaving your cart in the parking lot (which in turn possibly hits someone's car or prevents someone from parking in a particular space) is just plain impolite and lazy.

if you think you have an argument to the contrary ("this is ammrukah! we don't gotta take our carts back! FREEDOM!") then i agree with khcadwal: that says a lot about your character, in my opinion.

Jesus you people are nuts. It's not lazy to leave your cart in the parking lot. That's why they have those corrals, so you don't have to take it back inside. That's why employees collect the carts and bring them back in. Rarely do I see carts in the middle of a parking space.

There seems to be some confusion. Nobody is arguing about taking your cart inside the store instead of putting it in the corral.

The Harris Teeter at Cameron Village doesn't have corrals in the parking lot since the lot is like 30% of the size of a standard grocery store lot. But they CV HT also apparently provides a per-person cart-retrieval service. SO they're a special case.

The point here is not to leave your cart in some random place in the parking lot.

well i just disagree with you. i think it is similar to being an asshole to the waitstaff. i do not think the "its their job argument" applies here. i just think that it is an asshole move to take the cart out and not return it to the store. it doesn't take a lot of effort. why wouldn't you return it? so you don't clean up after yourself if there is someone else around to do it? i mean the baggers are also doing other things...like bagging. i just don't get why its so hard to understand why i think it is an asshole move to do this. i don't like lazy motherfuckers who think the world owes them shit. get over it. i'm sorry if you are offended. clearly i am not the only one that thinks this though, as evidenced by the thread. i get that you think it is trivial. but that is the point, like i said before, i don't. i think its lazy and inconsiderate and i don't care to associate with people like that. its like littering. i think that "trivial" things like this DO show something about a person.

agree to disagree.

This just strikes me as a petty generalization. Are you claiming that you have never littered before in your life? If so, then you have a point. Otherwise, what I was trying to convey was that the vast majority of people have probably left a cart in the parking lot at least once in their lives or littered. Just to give you some perspective, I used to be a bag boy in high school, so I know what it's like to have to collect the carts in the parking lot. It was a part of my job and yeah it pissed me off when I found carts pinned against curbs and sitting inside parking spots. However, I didn't always think these people were being inconsiderate or lazy, per se. Sometimes when we were really busy, there weren't enough bag boys to help people out to their cars, and single moms who brought their kids often left their carts because they couldn't manage the kids in the car and return the cart at the same time. I understand what your saying, about the people that just don't care and feel like it's not their responsibility. However, the act of leaving a cart does not always equate to someone being an asshole.

sure there are exceptions to everything. no i've never left a cart before. i don't litter. and i've only not tipped ONCE in my life and i had the absolute shittiest service of all time.

i'm sure there are single moms or elderly people that maybe CAN'T put their carts back. but just observing people in the parking lot (almost everytime i go somewhere that has carts, target, grocery store, etc i see someone leaving a cart somewhere) it just doesn't seem (to me) that there are THAT many exceptions. for the number of carts that are always out in these places i mean. there are always tons of carts in grocery store parkings lots and it is hard for me to believe that every single one of those people was a single mom or an elderly person.

so yes it is a generalization. but people in this thread seem to help prove my asshole point by saying "i will leave my cart wherever i please" "it is someone else's job to clean it up"

i'm pretty sure MOST (again a generalization) people that have posted stuff about not returning a cart in this thread are well and capable. and i'm willing to go out on a limb and bet that a big portion of the people that don't return carts are repeat offenders. like a single mom with kids might not return a cart once or twice. but it seems like, based on comments here, that there are people who routinely leave their cart in a parking lot.

so i get your point, yes it is a generalization. so i will rephrase: habitual cart leaver outers - i do not care for you.

better?
