3/22/2009 9:09:06 PM
well, mainly because I like coarsely ground pepper. and the shit that comes out of a shaker is generally fine as hell.
3/22/2009 10:02:00 PM
pepper SHOULD have more holes, but doesnt always
3/22/2009 10:03:42 PM
^^ and when have you ever seen chefs cook with anything other than fresh ground pepper?
3/22/2009 10:11:28 PM
...you arent in the culinary profession
3/22/2009 10:14:08 PM
but I do enjoy cooking and good foodand obviously if professional chefs use fresh ground, then it is betterand i prefer fresh ground pepper[Edited on March 22, 2009 at 10:20 PM. Reason : a]
3/22/2009 10:19:55 PM
its because they know people like the words "Fresh" and "Ground"so of course they would spend extra money on buzz words
3/22/2009 10:22:09 PM
Coarse pepper sucks, why would I want to be chewing my pepper
3/22/2009 10:23:42 PM
^^ peppercorns for my grinder are in no way more expensive than the pepper you put in your shakerand the flavor is definitely better. it is like saying that dried oregano is the same as fresh.[Edited on March 22, 2009 at 10:31 PM. Reason : a]
3/22/2009 10:30:38 PM
it is the same just a lil less water
3/22/2009 10:32:54 PM
and a lot less flavoryou can't seriously make an argument that dried herbs are just as good a fresh
3/22/2009 10:39:36 PM
why did this thread get so long?
3/22/2009 10:49:35 PM
my salt and pepper shakers are two halves of a fish. each has two holesthe pepper is in the tail because i was trying to decide and i decided the black/brown should come out the ass end

3/22/2009 10:58:46 PM
come on bighit, use your brain. the pepper flavor comes piperine and various terpenes which are released when the peppercorns are ground and can evaporate and are otherwise degraded by exposure to heat, light and moisture. so cracked pepper has a lot more flavor gram for gram.
3/22/2009 11:02:49 PM
use your brainthere aint no difference, pepper goes on steak....STEAKput some dry pepper and some fresh pepper on two diff steaks and feed em to me and i wont know the differenceBUZZ WORDS

steak au poivre is only made with cheap cuts of meatand it is definitely better when it is made with coarse, fresh cracked black pepper

I am amazed no one has posted this yet
3/23/2009 9:14:48 AM
salt flows easier than pepper, therefore there should be less open space for it to flow through. pepper should have more holes because it is harder to get out of the shaker.I don't use a salt or pepper shaker. i sprinkle salt by hand, and grind pepper.
3/23/2009 9:19:09 AM
3/23/2009 9:22:08 AM
The absolutely historically correct answer is that the salt shaker has more holes.(The further back in history you look, the more likely the salt shaker will have more holes)That being said, it makes much more sense for the pepper to have more holes. It's a "stupid tradition vs. what makes sense" debate.
3/23/2009 9:26:01 AM
i use a salt grinder and a pepper grinder
3/23/2009 9:27:04 AM
^^ That doesn't make any sense if you know the history of salt and how expensive it once was.[Edited on March 23, 2009 at 9:27 AM. Reason : .]
3/23/2009 9:27:22 AM
I prefer the pepper shaker to have more holes. The reason being, salt can ruin food quicker.
3/23/2009 9:30:09 AM
i have always put salt in the one with fewer holes. this is how my entire family does it. and it's because salt comes out easier than pepper, and we all like a lot of pepper on our food, but not much salt (both for taste and health reasons). but apparently we're doing it wrong...
3/23/2009 9:30:34 AM

3/23/2009 11:20:47 AM
might be something you dont want to tell ppl
3/23/2009 11:22:24 AM
i just put the salt in the shaker that i like the best b/c i never use pepper. i have a set of white porcelain koi shakers and they're in different positions.

Clearly they need an ISO 9000 standard. No more of this proprietary shaker nonsense.
