What I gathered from the article is that we have the equivalent of a grandfather clock's carillon in one of the nearby halls (Peele?) and just play it over the PA. This is more than I expected, thinking the chimes were completely electronically synthesized. What's the estimated sound amplitude to be produced by a full carillon in the tower itself?
3/23/2009 11:10:11 PM
while I don't know the exact answer to your question:The current speakers throw amplified tiny rod sounds (called semantra - that are hidden in Holladay Hall in a coat closet) several thousand feet. There are two vector based speakers (klaxtons) facing 30 degrees off axis in each cardinal direction (8 total). Therefore, if you are standing near the base of the tower the chime sounds are several times 'softer' than if you were 300 feet away because the speakers "throw" the sound over you, per se. A real bell carillon's sound would envelope a sphere around the belfry and fade proportionally with distance. The distance the sound travels depends on how hard the bells are struck. I have been told by the foundry that the carillon's sound will travel just as far, if not farther, than the current system - just more uniform. Keep in mind, also, environmental variables: vehicle sounds, wind, weather, time of day, etc. Wake Forest Univ. has a carillon in Wait Chapel done by the same foundry. On a clear morning at 7am, I've heard it from 2 miles away. Also, as stated ^, the chimes (rods) are 'played' (kicked rather, from below) live each time they sound. Only amplified thousands of times over. It's actually a pretty cool thing to see/hear. If anyone's interested in seeing the system, I'd be glad to take you into Holladay and answer questions. We'd have to go during the business day and around an hour so they ring. PVT if there are any takers!

So my 491t classmates and my dad all think it is a waste of time to put bells in there. My mom thinks it's a cool idea and some people on packpride think it is a waste of time too. Does no one really care about this?[Edited on March 26, 2009 at 6:16 PM. Reason : .]

Here is an idea, sell bricks by the tower. Alumni are able to have their name engraved in the bricks outside of the DH Hill Library and many of the halls. Why not do the same by the bell tower and charge $250 like they do at Carter Finley for a brick on the Dail Plaza. The money could go toward fixing the bell tower.
3/26/2009 6:20:21 PM
or they could carve their names in the columns of a parking deck on west lot
3/26/2009 6:32:51 PM
and if ncsu treated their students worth a shit the alums might actually be willing to donate some money
3/26/2009 6:33:38 PM
^fair enough.. students DO get treated like shit
3/26/2009 10:23:31 PM
yes, very true
3/26/2009 11:03:12 PM

We are selling shirts for 5$ in the brickyard from 11a-115p all week. Come check everything out. There will be renderings, old photos of campus, old documents, and questions answered. At this time we are documenting every person who purchases a shirt (or makes at least a 5$ donation equivalent) with intentions of casting those names into the master bell of the system, of course with a large block S. The remaining bells will be used to perpetuate those in various conflicts and battles since WWII (since the Old Alumni Memorial Bldg was a memorial to WWII State College men in 1956) who have also given their lives in service and were a part of the Wolfpack Community. For example: Men and Women from NCSU who were involved with the conflict in the Gulf (since we didn't officially declare war). Statements along those lines. It will be very hard to acquire every name of every student (of at least 1 semester) who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We don't want to leave anyone out. So, by the nature of these things, we will most likely use statements like the aforementioned. Are there any other ideas anyone could contribute to the project?

check out an aerial shot of both NCSU campuses. The main axis of centennial campus was purposefully set to align with the Memorial. most students don't even know that
4/21/2009 3:57:49 AM
Might have to get me one of the shirts

Hey Matt, we worked together in the CHASS lab awhile ago and had a spanish class together with that Dutch guy. Good luck with the project, I'm sure you'll get the fundage.
4/21/2009 3:25:09 PM
So the shirts are sold out, but they have a second order coming. You can put your name on the e-mail list and reserve a shirt.
4/23/2009 12:10:47 PM
Any word on when the next round of t-shirts will be in?
4/28/2009 12:24:59 PM
i most certainly do not give a fuck about the bell tower
4/28/2009 12:44:12 PM

^ Yes... it's with donation money.
4/28/2009 6:19:32 PM
Just fyi, Matt and his crew have never mentioned getting money from the University. All of their money is from private donations so I don't see why people keep bringing that issue up -- they're smart enough to know the school is in a lot of danger right now financially, k?[Edited on April 28, 2009 at 6:19 PM. 4/28/2009 6:19:43 PM
^Exactly. It's starting to get annoying. We KNOW the economy sucks. Maybe we should be bitching about Mrs. Easley getting $1g for teaching one class...
4/28/2009 6:21:37 PM
i didn't say they did and i never asked if they were. i was just explaining why some folks don't feel it's important.[Edited on April 28, 2009 at 6:24 PM. Reason : i'd donate $5 for another parking deck]
4/28/2009 6:23:12 PM
I know, but you're helping perpetuate the bandwagon effect. People read that part and go YEA STUPID PEOPLE, QUIT USING NCSU FUNDS. Like on the "No, Do Not Fix the Belltower" facebook thing.I think they should build another parking deck behind the gym...fucking 28 parking spaces or some crap.
