so if you in any way criticize the actions of a police officer/department you don't deserve their protection and help?

I mean, dude was going to get pulled over for running the red light regardless. A traffic stop is going to take some time...Let's say 6 minutes or so. The dude wasted the other 7 minutes himself by having such a shitty attitude.

Is a hospital "Home Base" for criminals now? If I run from the police can I park in front of a hospital and run in for safety?

So, it's okay for him to endanger other citizens by blowing through red lights and stop signs without any warning? The cop was an ass later on, but when he ordered everyone back into the car he was just trying to control the situation. When you pull over a car, you don't want 5 people jumping out of the car, that is a 5 to 1 situation and the officer quickly loses control over it.

If the dick driving the SUV had simply quickly pulled over at first, explained what was going on, this probably would have been avoided. Instead, he ran from the cop, continued to violate traffic laws, thus endangering the general populace, and then sits and then doesn't listen to the officer's instructions.

Now the cop got out of control after the situation became clear, but he was just doing his job at first, and if the people in the car had acted like reasonable adults then this wouldn't have been an issue. Yeah, I know his wife's mother was dieing, that doesn't give you the right to break laws and act like a lunatic.

Dude breaks the law and didn't stop when the cop tried to pull him over. He ran several stop signs and made several turns with the cop car right behind him.
He and several other people jump out of the car which was parked across a handicap spot.
He starts yelling at the cop. Two people walk away against the cop's orders.
Cop asks for insurance...He tells the cop to find it himself. He then tells the cop he doesn't have insurance.
He's uncooperative and confrontational about everything.
Basically, he's a dick to the cop and he got treated like a dick in return."

quoted for pg2

the cop did nothing wrong. he was pretty calm and rational as he did his job.

if at all possible, yes... never have and the most likely scenario I can see for calling them is a situation where an offical police report would be needed for insurance claims, or something of the like.

its pretty telling that the other cop on the scene and the department seems to think he was in the wrong...not to mention the cop blantantly lied to the guy. The dude even asked to have the ticket, just get it over with quickly.

fyi david glenn is having an interesting conversation on this topic...

I can agree with arguments on both sides of this incident...

The cop's side - Yeah, the guy ran from him breaking traffic law after traffic law and then when he stops, 5 people jump out of the car and run towards him. Suspect to me. But afterall, he went to a hospital. not saying its a safe-haven, but who's going to RUN to such a common area?

The dude's side - AFTER HE FINALLY STOPPED, the cop should have said "Okay, I'm coming with you." or something of the like. But instead, douchebag cop decided to show off how much power he has by constantly asking "You know what I can do to you?" and rubbing the guys face in his stupidity. The guy asked the cop several times to please just hurry. But the cop insisted on showing his power over him...

Quote :
" “Shut your mouth,” Powell told him. “You can cooperate and settle down, or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.”

There was more back and forth.

“If you’re going to give me a ticket, give me a ticket.”

“Your attitude says that you need one.”

“All I’m asking you is just to hurry up.”

Powell began a lecture.

“If you want to keep this going, I’ll just put you in handcuffs,” the officer said, “and I’ll take you to jail for running a red light.” "

case in point there.

The driver, whose family member was dying, acted emotional. This is reasonable. What is the officer's excuse for not being able to calmly take control of the situation? That is, after all, his job. He could have easily escorted the driver and family to the hospital room, handling ticketing, etc. later. He choose to act like Rod Farva.

Just another pig on a power trip.

I'm on the side of the cop for this situation. Traffic laws aren't optional depending on where you are going. You can't just decide to NOT stop when a cop pulls you over and not expect it to take a little bit longer.

In fact, this cop cut him a MAJOR break by not arresting him for refusal to pull over. This guy needs to thank the cop.

if ryan would have struck and killed another person, would you care if the police officer said "Don't worry, since you were rushing to the hospital, this isn't really your fault....free to go"?

You can't just ignore laws that directly affect others' lives simply because you're in a dire situation.

Also, did his mother-in-law just "come down" with fatal breast cancer? OR was she in the hospital for a while? Why was he just then rushing to the hospital? (Before I get flamed, I realize this isn't entirely relevant to the cop issue, but I wonder anyways)

^x7 Up to the point in time at which the officer understands that there is no longer a threat to person, property, etc, whatever. I agree. You need to pull over for flashing blue lights. You need to remain in your car after pulling over. Where the officer really screws up is after the potential for further illegal activity is reasonably neutralized - i.e. the car is pulled over and no one is doing anything threatening. If anything, the officer escalates the situation by immediately pulling his firearm. Passengers moved quickly out of the vehicle and into the hospital, but the driver remains, standing in a non-threatening manner, explaining himself and answering questions - even admitting guilt and requesting a ticket, if done as quickly as possible. This is just another asshole cop who got picked on so much as a kid that he confuses respecting and obeying the law with respecting and obeying him.

They received a phone call saying that the mother was in 'code blue' which indicates that 6 minutes could make the difference between saying good bye and spending your time on the side of the road. If it was anyone about whom I cared, I too would do all in my power to snatch up one of those precious remaining moments. I wouldn't have stopped outside and would have walked in. Not doing that is the only thing I think the driver did wrong.

Quote :
"it's okay for him to endanger other citizens by blowing through red lights and stop signs without any warning?"

I'm not sure if you payed full attention to the video or if you made an assumption and looked for reasons to support the officer, but the driver didn't 'bullet' through. The officer even acknowledged that he came to a full stop, waved on any traffic and then passed through when no one was coming. The amount of danger posed by the driver's actions were next to none and definitely is misrepresented when described as endangering the general populace.

exactly. and this is something that any reasonable adult who doesn't see the world in extreme black and whites should be able to acknowledge.

Quote :
"if ryan would have struck and killed another person, would you care if the police officer said "Don't worry, since you were rushing to the hospital, this isn't really your fault....free to go"?"

Yes, then I would have cared, because that is a completely different situation. However, the driver did utilize care and such a travesty did not take place. One has to be able to evaluate the mitigating circumstances objectively. Please refer to what I said above.

Quote :
"SOLUTION: Stop at red lights"

He did stop, and merely continued to go at an opening. I'm sure we've all been to a red light where no one was coming, but it lasted for many minutes. While the time required would likely not have been as long as the stop, it still could have been the hair line difference between saying good bye and not.

Personally i think the mentality of the officers there can be summed in at the point in the video where they are discussing chases and the charging officer says "we do not chase for something like this" and the other officer says "i know, i was hoping it was something better"

Also the officer lying in front of people and suggesting had the driver merely explained the circumstances when he got there that he would have moved on is truly despicable.

There are some good points in this thread as well as some bad points. Some things the officer did were reasonable, some not so. Its really easy to MMQB a cop and its extremely difficult to rationalize their actions to people who aren't in LE. Oh well.

I'm just saying, without realizing that (^^^), you don't really understand that the cop was threatening Moats in a round about way.

The cop was basically saying "you're going to sit here and listen to me ramble on. If you don't, I can arrest you for something that you didn't do. That thing is resisting an officer, blah blah blah...."

Show me the case where someone pulls over when the cop turns on his lights and respectfully tells the officer that his mother-in-law is dieing and I'll have a lot of sympathy for them if the officer doesn't let them go immediately or at least expedite the ticket process.

This dumbass ran a bunch of stop signs that you can clearly see in the video with a cop car blazing his lights right behind him. Then he jumped out and started yelling at the cop. When asked for his registration he told the cop to go find it himself. You're a fool if you can't see all the ways this guy fucked himself over.

That cop had no way of knowing who Moats was. He could have just as easily been some random thug transporting illegal substances who told his girlfriend to run into the hospital and dump the evidence down the toilet.

I've been dealt bullshit by the cops, but I was never stupid enough to bring it on myself by ignoring them or jumping out of the car and yelling at them when they pulled me over. If you have a good reason, and I agree that Moats had a damn good reason for what he did, then the best thing you can do is be respectful and honest. If you're not treated with the same respect and urgency then I'd agree that there is a problem, but in this case I just can't fault the officer.

^^ the only problem is that when he was TOLD that the mother in law really was in the hospital dying he continued to delay the dude from going in. Its the officers job to deal with emotional situation and to minimize distress, when he knew the full situation he kept acting the same way, which makes him a dick. Had he told the guy to go when they told him for sure that he was telling the truth, problem solved imo
