That would be funny as shit if Calipari plays Kentucky the way he played us. Of course, the funniest part is that the school getting played the most is Memphis.
I'm all for renegotiating and getting as much money as you can, but there is something to be said for some basic loyalty and not shopping offers every two years.

I would agree with that. I think that UNC actually might be the #1 job in all of college basketball simply because their fans aren't total nut jobs like Kentucky's are...
It's crazy how they made such bad hires in Doh and DUI Billy...3/30/2009 7:09:30 PM |

Carolina doesn't have nutjob fans because they usually win. Once they start losing, if that ever happens, look out.

What do you think Roy does, ask nicely for them to hustle?
You can't really believe that UNC ever backed Doh. It was just used as a way to get Roy back to UNC. I wouldn't be surprised if Roy didn't orchestrate the whole thing himself. The only thing going on behind-the-scenes was a big paycheck to Doh for him to disappear. 3/30/2009 11:35:53 PM |

do you really think they would have given a shit how good he was at "interpersonal relationships 101" if he had kept winning? I've said this before and I'll say it again, the whole "he didn't get along with so and so" or "he pissed off the wrong people" type stuff you read in the media is all a clever cover story for firing coaches that underperform. It's a smart PR move for the schools to save face but it's mind-boggling that so many people buy into it, the NIT is just as unacceptable at UNC as it is at Kentucky and that is the bottom line.3/31/2009 12:28:35 AM |

"And in college basketball news today, John Calipari was hired as the new head basketball coach at UNC. He signed a 5 year deal worth $80 million, making him the highest-paid basketball coach in the world. Sources closes to the deal said that no price was too high for the public ivy school located in Chapel Hill."

that is why I think he is probably leaving. Calipari is a good coach, but probably one of the biggest dirtbags in college bball. He is all about the money, period.
I think he is going to Kentucky, taking Cousins with him (and probably Henry) and will have them back in one to two years. And I honestly think he will have them back on probation if he is there long enough. He has too big of an ego to think he will get caught again, or that what he is doing isn't that big of a deal. 3/31/2009 8:37:22 AM |

Marcus Camby was being paid off by a sports agent unbeknownst to Calipari.
Quote : | "...a subsequent NCAA investigation found that Camby illegally accepted a total of $28,000 from sports agents that were attempting to lure him into the NBA Draft after his Sophomore season, and the school was forced to vacate its Final Four appearance as well as return their 1996 NCAA Final Four trophy. Camby eventually repaid the school the $151,000 in lost Final Four revenue that came as a result of the NCAA's ruling. While a Final Four banner still hangs from the rafters of the Mullins Center in defiance of the NCAA's ruling, the appearance is marked with an asterisk in official record books, even though it was noted that there was absolutely no institutional wrongdoing." |

There is no doubt he is a phenomenal recruiter and coach. His success speaks for itself. We would have probably been in the sweet sixteen this season if we had landed him a few years ago.
On the other hand, I'm not all that disappointed we didn't land him because some sketchy shit happens at his programs and I don't want to go through another Les Robinson-like dark age of NCstate bball. 3/31/2009 10:05:27 AM |

So he is just posturing to get Memphis to pay him more or will he go to Kentucky? Conference-wise its not much of a step up 3/31/2009 10:19:03 AM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
eh, its easy to say that this year, but the SEC is still light years ahead of conf USA. If calipari went to UK, I think he would have them at or near the top of the college basketball world in a few years and CUSA would be an afterthought on the national scene again.
Are you trying to troll Jaybee again? 3/31/2009 10:36:05 AM |

^^^ I would say he is a phenomenal recruiter (probably the best in the country) and a decent coach. There are plenty of guys that are better at X's and O's but talent wins games.
^^ CUSA to SEC not much of a step up? Do you realize CUSA has such powerhouses as Marshall, Tulane, Southern Miss, ECU, Rice, and SMU? This was a down year for the SEC, but you take Memphis out of CUSA and it might not be in the ten best conferences.

So apparently what happened is after UK's initial offer to Calipari, the Memphis AD gave him a counter offer that Cal considered insulting. That's when all the quotes from the players and such came out that it was a done deal. Afterwards the big Memphis boosters (FedEx CEO, some other billionaire), basically told the Memphis AD to stfu and had a private meeting with Cal where they offered him what amounts to a retirement package. He'd be getting paid an unprecedented salary for any level of coaching, be given a private jet, etc.... That happened late last night so I guess he's making his decision now. The word out of Memphis though is that he's probably still going to UK. 3/31/2009 11:22:47 AM |

He was also banging hookers in his on campus dorm room while said agent/pimp guarded the hall. In fact, it's well documented (google Bob Ryan Marcus Camby) that he and another UMass player (no, not Carmelo Travieso or Edgar Padilla) had a nice little threesome with a hooker under the agents watch.
