how dare you be held accountable for the bandwith you use!

it makes perfect sense for a company to jettison the high-bandwith users, or at least make them cover their share of usage.

no such thing as a free lunch, EVEN HULU OR NETFLIX!!!!!!!!1111111111

at least for one month, until customers get smacked with a $600 cable bill.

their addressing a symptom not a problem. this is something that will become increasingly more common, and what appears to be an individual outlier currently will sooner or later be the status quo.

which is why they are preparing for the new status quo by instituting pricing structures now that will more accurately reflect the service they will be providing when that status quo arrives.

I don't doubt the trends, but the people using Hulu/Netflix/downloading ISOs of Xbox 360 games/bluray rips/etc are still the outliers for now.

TW is just making them someone else's problem, and really--what loyalty do you think these type of people have anyway?

it makes perfect sense until you realizing that they're not offering a reduction in cost for people who use minimal bandwidth. All they're proposing is additional costs for the bigger users, even though their price structure had already taken these bigger users into account in past pricing schemes.

Also, 40GB ain't shit. AT&T and Comcast are offering 150gb and 250gb, respectively.

Well they almost have a monopoly in many areas because of the phone lines being owned mostly by them.

I think its extreme bullshit.

that's not true. with the advent of hulu and netflix, high bandwidth consumption has moved from the tail of the bell curve further towards the center. used to be you could only use that much bandwidth on bit-torrent or downloading linux isos. now your grandma can do it watching desperate housewives or whatever.

it's just funny how TWC wants to go backwards from the rest of the world

in south korea, you can get gigabit connections to your ISP. most people in the US don't have gigabit networking in their homes, let alone to the mothership

So... I'll take an average packet size of say, .001MB (roughly 1024 bytes). Extrapolate out from my current network usage that puts me at (on 30 day time frame)

13572.75MB upstream
23490.26MB downstream
-------------------------
37063.01MB total

That's just from normal browsing... no HD videos or anything out of the ordinary. I haven't had any contracts to develop for this month either, so no huge file uploads to the server. One good video project can push 100GB, and that all has to filter through the server for backup... 40GB is stupid.

It's been mentioned many times in other places about this, but going in on a business class connection is not a bad deal from TWC if you live in an area where 2-3 dwellings can piggy back. When I lived in a town house we did that. Had a fast connection and had a router that would quota the neighbors internet use (they were paying ~25% of the bill). They were just browsers and never even came close to the monthly quota. With their portion it worked out to be just a few dollars more than the standard roadrunner and we got the business support when things were not clicking instead of the 45 minute wait on the consumer lines.

Are they also improving their infrastructure or just screwing over their customers?

precisely. If this was truly about how much bandwidth was being used by outliers or extreme users then the simple solution would be to charge by the gigabyte instead of creating 3 pricing streams which have concrete ceilings and as such provide no elasticity for their greater consumer base.

preparing for the new status quo would be increases in infrastructure that would ultimately provide the available bandwidth to all customers instead of targeting a class of 'bandwidth hogs' that will no doubt fit everyone sooner as opposed to later.

what they are really doing is sticking it to people who have removed their cable because they can now watch their favorite shows online. If you were paying for cable but only watched the networks and comedy central and amc then you could go online and watch all your favorite shows in high definition without the need for time warner's cable package. In an economic downturn, such as the one we're currently experiencing, such an option becomes clear to customers and many take this. TW wants to make this as cost inefficient as having the cable package so less people will switch. Their purpose is so transparent its aggravating.

Well if they were a company who had to compete and wasn't a monopoly, then they would to update their infrastructure to account for all this 'new' bandwidth.

It's all the people canceling TV to watch stuff online.
