science/modern taxonomy (shit, even most classic taxonomy) says that they should be classified as a fruit

but unfortunately the american board of agriculture ruled that it was a vegetable, so technically, that is what we have to call it....

IGNORANCE AT IT'S BEST/WORST (depending on how you look at it)

No they're not. And typing out "um" is retarded.

So basically you aren't american if you think tomatoes are fruits.

Funny you say that... because "fruit" is a scientific term. So how can you describe something in terms of a scientific term (or say that it is not that thing), and then say you don't care what science says. You are an idiot.

What are you talking about? There is no controversy here or a split among scientists. "Modern taxonomy"? "Most classic taxonomy"? "Should be"? It is a fruit plain and simple.

I have explained this point on TWW at least 5 times over the past few years. 'Vegetable' is NOT a scientific term. The American Board of Agriculture is not a scientific body. There is NO scientific or biological definition of 'vegetable'. Any part of a plant which is typically consumed cooked, whether a fruit, leaf, shoot, root, flower, etc, is called as a 'vegetable' is common English. As I said, it is not a technical word.

And what do you mean "this is what we have to call it...."??? Are we mandated by law to call it 'vegetable'? Because that's what it sounds like you said. You don't have to call it anything, or not call it anything. Scientifically, it is a fruit. But since it is usually cooked, in normal language, it is called a vegetable. You call it what you want. Call it 'oogabooga' if you want.

it means that in terms of crop shares and sales, it is deemed a vegetable, not a fruit

Quote :
""Modern taxonomy"? "Most classic taxonomy"? "

modern taxonomy is the classification based on genetic markers, such as ATPase, but more commonly the 16s rRNA

classical is based on things that are more phenotypically defined

and I'm saying it should be classified as a fruit, but it has INTERNATIONALLY been deemed to be a vegetable- while SCIENTIFICALLY, that might be wrong, it is the standard of classification we have chosen

V haha to each their own

pretty much everything we classify as a "fruit" is sweet

tomatoes are not sweet

therefore, a case could be made that in a common, informal sense, a tomato is not a fruit

False. Some tomatoes, when ripe, are sweet.
Besides, "vegetable" is a general term. All fruits are vegetables.

It'd be nice and efficient if all fruits were sweet, or all cheeses would melt, or all meat had to be cooked, but we live in a complex world -- and it's one where tomatoes are fruits. Period.

(lol at this thread)

^^ how can a mathematician make such a mistake?

you admit there are exceptions to the alleged rule ("pretty much")

and then you say because a tomato doesn't fit this alleged rule, it is not a fruit.

I noticed that, actually...I just put in "pretty much" because there might have been some fruit I'd never heard of, which happened not to be sweet. Being a mathematician, I try not to assume things. But I would be prepared to argue that such a fruit is not, by according to common understanding, a fruit at all.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to clear that up...I have nothing more to add. Let's get this thread back to puns, and posting famous gay people, and things like that

I know you said you have nothing more to add... but what about lemons?

Are they vegetables in common language? I have never heard anybody refer to them as vegetables. And if you say they are not fruits... perhaps we should put them in condiments? Flavourings? But if you have to choose fruits or vegetables, what are lemons?

Not really. Vegetable isn't a scientific term, only fruit is. Tomatoes are technically/scientifically a fruit, but are commonly called a vegetable, much like a cucumber or eggplant, and are legally recognized as a vegetable by the United States.

Pears. Pears are the Fruit of Kings, thus are the King of Fruits.

Dekopon is delicious. It's the size of a navel orange, but with the sweetness of tangerines. It's what skunkworks would have made if they made fruit instead of spyplanes.
