I have no idea what people are saying when they are saying it a difference between rap and hip-hop, hip-hop is a form of rap, just as west-coast music and down-south music are also forms of rap, and in addition to this gangsta rap is a form of rap. There are many forms of rap. Get it right people.

fuck off.

you couldnt think of that shit, and even if you did, you couldnt put it to a beat and make it sound good. its sad that people cant even respect what is good about rap/hip hop whether they like it or not. yeah theres a bunch of commercial shitty rap music but you can say the same for EVERY OTHER GENRE.

^ i consider a group like tribe called quest "hip hop" and someone like biggie smalls "rap."

^hahaha

I love that, yeah I must just be misinformed about rap, must've missed it's eloquence and more subtle nuances somewhere along the way. Or perhaps I'm just not 'real' enough to have discovered the secret, hard-hitting and TRUE rap that's out there.

I mean, we can't all be as genuine and thug as you

yeah. Outkast is an exception. all of their albums are really solid. ATLiens was my favorite from them. possibly Aquemini is equal to ATLiens.

There really seemed to be a break at some point during the gangsta rap area when rappers referred to their trade as rap and the folks that werent rapping about killing cops referred to their art as hip hop.

Could you honestly see yourself calling The Chronic or Doggystyle or anything from Ice Cube hip hop? Or something from Diggable Planets as rap?

I guess it goes back to the lifestyle comment, I just can't call the style of music coming out of those that don't really live the hip hop lifestyle hip hop.

Nonetheless, there just doesn't seem to be a real consensus on what the terms mean. If you don't think they have evolved, you haven't paid attention.

Just do a search in google of hip hop vs rap and see what I am talking about.

Or just look at the wikipedia entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music
and notice how for the 1990s all the "rappers" keep getting referred to as rappers and the music as rap, then in the next paragraph they refer to De La Soul and Gang Starr as hip hop artists.

I was on 64 between Plymouth and Columbia today, and one of the random stations that I could pick up played Fresh Prince's "Summertime".

It's still good.

most good rap sold the fuck out. wu-tang won't even put anything good out anymore

it definitely started going downhill in the late 90s and didn't really die till about the time jay-z decided to "retire"

2 falsities with that. I love Meth, he's a very good rapper, but 4:21 wasn't a great album. It was good, but no where near tical or judgement day (which made references to the genre dying)

I disagree. You all can have your opinions, and I respect that, but Meth's stuff is not being played much because he is old school.

When it stopped being about the message and started being about the image. Mind you, that this does not only apply to rap.

I think the problem with rap is that at first it was the voice of culture that didn't have access to musical theory. It was primitive by any measure, very basic, almost guttural, in musical structure; but, that wasn't the point.

It had a message to convey and the artists and songwriters voice is paramount in any mid 80s-early 90s rap. While not easy to listen to, most of the "beats" in background were an afterthought, again, not a bad thing.

------------------------------------

Fast forward to today. We have nonsensical lyrics that are more in line with African call and response -- one of the most primitive. They focus more on objectifying woman with clever euphemisms or describing how badass the "singer" is. The "beats" are either sampled and/or consciencely reject 500 years of classical music theory.

The image of the new hip hop culture is being sold to people, en mass. The songwriters are pushed aside to sell the catchy beat, that rarely is original.

Hip-hop made rap transition from art to entertainment in all the worst ways.

This is not to say that there is no good hip-hop, or that rap is the voice of a degenerative culture, or even that its not entertaining. I just personally believe that it no longer has any actual purpose other to entertain, which is contradictory to its origins.

there were these things called poems before rap... all rap/hiphop/whatever is, is a fucking poem (a really really bad one most of the time) set to a sample of someone elses music...

shit they use vocoders and auto-pitch now so much any fat slob can do it...

freestyling takes some talent. the majority of everything else in that entire genere does not really
