Because when you get the cancer, you're gonna come out of those hookah bars and clog up Obama's shiny new gov't health system. You.. Will.. Stay.. Healthy..-for the benefit of the State.
You should be on your knees thanking the beneficent politicians who are selflessly looking out for everyone else's best interests.4/24/2009 10:30:09 PM |

"It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences." -- C. This worries me about universal healthcare. Since they would be the ones 'paying' for it, that gives the government a leg to stand on for making such statements.
I believe NC is already looking to impose BMI requirements on state employees in the name of cost savings.4/27/2009 5:32:19 PM |

^ not likely.....
BMI is thrown off by men (or women) who tend to have a lot more lean mass for their size frame. This can be from a regular disciplined weigh lifting routine or just natural. Nonetheless a person with a lot of muscle will weigh more and appear to be "overweight" according to their BMI.
The only thing the state could feasibly do is take body fat % measurements of employees.
BMI is truly useless beyond just slapping a label onto the sedentary population. 4/27/2009 6:54:30 PM |

ORLY?
A proposed SC bill:
Quote : | "The Budget and Control Board shall charge state employees who participate in the State Health Plan an additional twenty-five dollars a month if the employee is obese. For purposes of this section, a person is obese if the person's body weight in kilograms divided by the square of the body's height in meters exceeds thirty. The Budget and Control Board shall promulgate regulations necessary to administer the additional fee. The Budget and Control Board must publish the effects of this section in the annual Insurance Benefits Guide prior to any calendar year in which the additional fee is charged." |

And in NC:
Quote : | "State employees, teachers and retirees: They will see their benefits reduced through higher co-payments and deductibles. They will also have to pay higher premiums of 8.9 percent annually for their dependents. They no longer will receive free routine eye exams. Those who smoke will be moved into the most expensive plan by July 1, 2010, while those who are seriously overweight will be moved into the most expensive plan by July 1, 2011. A proposal to move the plan to a calendar year to make it easier to use health savings accounts and other services was scuttled." |

Did they seriously draft this legislation without taking into account those that body build and may have a higher muscle lean mass than the average or those that our taller 6'2" and above.
For a given weight the BMI gets skewed as your start drifting height to far by the mean. Some experts think that in order to accurately scale with height the formula should be changed to
weight/ (height^2.4) 4/30/2009 8:14:21 PM |
