Anyone else have all the enamel pins from Fast Fare?

Muggsy, Zo, LJ, Gill, & Curry. Still got mine.

Also, there's that episode of My Brother & Me with Kendall Gill.

I was there for the inaugural season too, my brother and I had on Hornets tees and some reporter took a pic of us front and back. I remember going to "fan appreciation days' or something at the coliseum, and getting my Dell Curry card signed. He was my fave.

executive summary of this thread:

1) good times when the hornets were in the QC and our mascot had some relevance to the city
2) Fuck George Shin(n?)
3) Fuck Bob Johnson and the Bobcats

i know it will never happen, but lets change the Bobcats to the Polygamists, then get a three way name change trade between New Orleans, Charlotte, and Utah to set things right

I remember going to the fan appreciation days in like 97 and 98 and doing the jousting down on the arena floor. A lot of fun.

When Gattison's opened in the shopping center off Carmel Rd and Quail Hollow, i used to ride my bicycle over and hope to meet Hornets players.

Clearly I thought they were all at the bar after school during the week drinking at Kenny Gattison's new place.

It closed up pretty quickly but I still remember that.

Did the Hornets have their games on HTS, or was that just the Bullets?

Yeah, but Fox Sports didn't exist until the late 90s or so. Until then, the only cable sports channels were HTS and ESPN (at least in Eastern NC and Virginia).

Still blows my mind that we traded Muggsy & Tony Delk to the Warriors for BJ Armstrong.

(people forget about that trade)

i watched most of the games in 1988 in my room on a 20" black/white tv while playing Nerf basketball.

I have the 3some of Dell Curry, Kelly Tripucka, and Rex Chapman Starting Lineups.

And i think the complete team set of NBA hoops cards featuring studs like Robert Reid, Dave Hoppen, Sidney Lowe haha.

God I wish the Bobcats weren't so low rent. They just suck in every way compared to the Hornets.

I remember the last home game in Hornets History. Its an NBA on NBA deal, Sunday afternoon, Roundball Rock, The Hive was fucking jacked. We're down 2-1 to Jersey, but we dominated the last game and have the momentum. We had fantastic tickets, 5 rows back and level with the foul line. We're behind the Nets bench, talking shit to Van Horn and Kittles, Ric Flair comes in on a motorcycle pregame. Most pumped I've ever been for a game in my life.

Of course, the game itself was a bit of a letdown. We started off strong, but Baron and Wesley shot a combined like 10-35 and Jason Kidd drops a triple double, sending us down 3-1 in the series. Best part of the game was Lee Nailon going toe to toe with Kenyon Martin, and then kinda headbutts him before Elden Campbell breaks it up. Even then, Martin was psychotic.

After the game, we're at Jock n' Jills, too young to drink, but sipping on ginger ale, reminiscing about the team, realizing we'd probably never see them play another game in Charlotte. And we were right. They packed up that summer, and sure, we got the Bobcats a few years later, but its just not the same. Professional basketball in Charlotte died that day, and it really has yet to come back.

^ that was a tough series.

Remember when we absolutely DRILLED the Heat in that series one year. Won every game by like 30 haha.

The lowest moment for me was Michael Jordan getting all those foul calls against us in '95 and then he commits a blatant foul at the buzzer and it goes uncalled and we lose the series. That just pissed me off to no end. Never trusted NBA refs since.

Ugh just remembered the home game loss to the bucks where glenn robinson hit that three... jesus that sucked

For some reason I liked the Hornets growing up. I had a charlotte hornets pencil.

And then they moved to New Orleans.

And I was all "aaawwww shiiiite".

And then I went to many basketball games and volunteered to help out before a game once and got to sit in a suite and watch the game fo free and got a free shirt.

no kidding- if you were a kid growing up in Charlotte in the 90s, the Charlotte Hornets were golden gods. I cant even describe how amazing they were to me. Just thinking about it makes me feel like I'm 10 years old again shooting hoops in my driveway with my Starter jacket on.

I think its a combination of being young and being nostalgic that makes the Charlotte Hornets such an amazing part of our lives.

Basketball, and sports, were pure. There were no social networking sites where players became humans and you realized they weren't superheroes.

I remember trick or treating in Ballantyne when it was just being developed, and Bobby Phills had just bought a house there down the street from my best friend right after being traded from the Cavs. He wasn't there, but his wife let me and my friend come inside the house and check out all his framed jerseys. She gave us FULL SIZE candy bars. It wasn't too long afterwards (2 years maybe) that he was killed. He remained a favorite of mine for a long time.

FOREVER HORNETS

Sucks that Kobe made it well known he wasn't going to play in Charlotte, you usually have to wait until you've accomplished something to become a cocksucker.

man this thread keeps getting better and better and the state of basketball in charlotte keeps getting sadder and sadder.

I feel like I took the Hornets for granted a lot of the time. I went to a lot of games, not that I was ever really into NBA basketball growing up (definitely a lot more then than i am now) but we went to a handful of games each season in the 90s. By the time 2002 came I had moved on, was preparing to graduate and move on to college and I guess the team move never really had an effect on me emotionally until a few years later.

the funny part of that 88-89 poster is with the lighting (or lack of) and the dark background, Bryan Rowsom's hair blends perfectly into the background, so it makes it look like he has a weird shaped head

i dunno how many Hornets games I went to, I'd imagine 200+
