Damn, what are the chances that when we're trying to upgrade it, lightning strikes. Did it damage the carillon/speakers, or just the structure, clock, and lights?Presumably it's insured...

yes, it is insured, meetings are going on right now to decide what to do about that teetering stone up top. If we have a repeat of storms, it could fall and possibly hurt someone. Then we'd have to get 2 specially carved Mt. Airy Granite carved blocks to replace the damaged ones. The speakers are fine and the clock was reset this morning. Much more yellow tape, though. They will have to get a crane to retrieve it, though. But the cost of doing that might outweigh letting it just fall and break, then getting a new one made and replaced. Well, if they need a crane to put the stone back in its place, they're going to need a crane to put a new stone in its place. They just need to bite the bullet and fix the thing, and probably install a couple lightning rods for good measure to keep it from screwing up/directly striking the tower.

yeah, but they'll have a crane up there anyway to install the new one that's gone. i guess it depends on whether those folks will install the new one and fix the damaged one all at the same time or if they'll only install new stuff. if the latter is the case, then it might be cheaper to let them just install 2 new ones.
