It isn't trolling at all, you motherfuckers have had the right to poison the air for how long now? Guess what...YOU CAN STILL DO THAT...you just have to do it in a way that you and all your health care cost raising buddies can't do it in a way that it infringes on everyone that likes to keep the shit out of their lungs.

I applaud this legislation whole heartedly, about fucking time.

if you honestly think smokers have an effect on insurance rates that comes anywhere close to the effect of bonuses and cornercutting in the industry itself, then you should BLAST YOURSELF FOOL

Sure, please show some stats, I'd love to see your detailed research on the matter

And I'm guessing you're hiding behind private property rights because you rather enjoy killing yourself slowly with your cancer stick.

Why should I have to do anything? I made the reasonable assertion, its basically common sense, that smoking (like fatties) causes insurance rates to rise for everyone. I don't think it is common knowledge what he stated, much less the fact that it might swap any rise in rates due to smoking.

It's like 190 for my wife and I. Before that, I had some killer insurance (like 100 free massages a year type shit) that is 480 or something for both of us.

are these from the cancer (etc) caused by second hand smoke? or from the smokers themselves?

Ummm, the rant you're drawing that from wasn't really specifically about second hand smoke, though there are plenty of studies showing it does have an effect on people.

From a purely, 100% selfish point of view... I'm fucking thrilled.

This was one of the few things I was NOT looking forward to about moving back to NC after living in a place where I can go out and not smell like a chimney.

Again, being purely selfish...

^^at least you admit this

i have no problem that people admit having their own personal reasons for this, on either side of the issue

i also don't like smokers who are against this just because they want to smoke, and then use the business owner's rights being taken away as their reasoning. As a guy who smokes when he drinks, I would have no problem going outside to have a smoke- I just think it should be the bar owners decision to run their bar this way

I'm actually trying to quit, so this will probably help me in the end. But that doesn't change the fact that I think it is wrong to take away the owners right to run his business as he/she sees fit

^^^my hair still smells like smoke from yesterday

but yea i get what everyone is saying i'm not a smoking fan. though there are a lot of bars i go to that are smoking, but have designated sides, and i don't end up smelling like smoke

other places make me reek but i mean, i choose to go there, i'll accept the consequences. if i cared enough i'd just not go out (to those places, assuming i had a choice which i realize some of you don't but if you live in a place where you don't have a choice to go out to a different bar i can only assume that if you and other nonsmokers boycotted the ONE bar in your town, the bar owner would probably feel the effects...but maybe you did and maybe they didnt), i wouldn't cry to the government to do my dirty work for me. but that is just me.

in other questions, were there like tax incentives for business owners to go nonsmoking prior to this?

^yea i'm more interested in the government involvement in it. i don't care either way because it doesn't affect me. well except for the not smelling like smoke part. i wasn't that worried about lung cancer from second hand smoke (though i guess it is a risk, but you can get lung cancer from normal air pollutants and liver disease from drinking. if i'm at a bar i'm not exactly the pinnacle of morality i suppose).

Pretty much every new establishment that opens now is non smoking.

I wanna know who is responsible for enforcing the non smoking rule. Is it gonna be the bar staff or the cops??

The establishments will get a fine... nothing but getting asked to leave the establishment will happen to the smokers themselves.

I don't care if smokers raise your insurance rates, that doesn't have shit to do with the underlying issue. Insurance is optional. Rights are not. If its my business I should be able to do what ever the fuck I want to in it (within some reason of course). If the establishment allows smoking and that bothers you, then GTFO. I don't see what is so hard to understand about that. Hell, I hate cigarette smoke in bars, but this law is trampling on business owner's rights at the behest of the majority. I wish the liberals getting all this shit pushed through would go ruin another state.

As an occassional smoker I'm actually kind of ambivalent to this. On the one hand I don't really care for government regulation of markets or liberties. On the other hand, it's nice being able to drink without the choice of whether or not to smoke being effectivey made for you. It's quite hard to resist the urge after a few beers when surrounded in a rich and delicious cloud of oh-so-tempting tobacco smoke...

No sir. Smoking continues to be a legal activity. And now private individuals who own private businesses are being told that they're not to allow that legal activity to continue.
"

With all due respect I have been stopped, bitched at and/or ticketed for open containers in the following places.

- one foot 3 inches on to a sidewalk next to a house on a corner lot
- inside a "private" convenience store
- on brent road
- walking across a "private" yard in greenville nc
- on hillsborough street when the beer was not even open and the fucker made me pour out teh three i had anyway

So the whole "omg they are telling me what to do with my legal stuff" is not really a relevant argument. The guy making that argument to WRAL must not understand that laws can change at anytime......back in the day it was legal to drive with no license, now its not, even though you can legally drive......I bet back then people were like "THE GOVERNMENT IS TELLING ME WHAT TO DO WITH MY CAR THAT I CAN LEGALLY DRIVE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE WHEREVER I WANT TO"

The State can and did tell you what the fuck are your rights. This isn't the Fed we're talking about here, if the bar/rest owners don't like it, they can get the fuck out. Somehow, our founding fathers didn't see States right to do this as being so oppressive that they left it out.
