I've been thinking about that, there are like hardly any good will smith movies(imo), despite the everyone's love affair with him.

Men In Black.
I, Robot i guess.

Will Smith was great in I, Robot and I am Legend, despite the rest of the movie being crap on both occasions. But he has been reason enough to see a movie, and I thought that's what we've been talking about. Not if the movie was good or not. Having Will Smith in a movie gives it a pretty strong potential of being good.

In comparison, Nicholas Cage never makes a movie good, he only has the potential to break it. The first National Treasure could have been amazing, but he ruined it. NT2 never had a chance.

In that case, his movies don't live up to that potential very often at all, lol.

I understand he's a really likeable actor, but I don't get why people(america in general) keep classifying him as must see. Hancock, Seven Pounds, MIB 2, Shark Tale, I Am Legend, etc. etc. etc. are all complete shit. I contend his only REALLY good movie is Men In Black. Role choices have to come in somewhere in the must-see/must-avoid topic. Which is where Nic Cage suffers as well. He's proven to be good at times, but he takes every role ever now, ugh.

^^I liked Hancock, thought I am Legend was ok, but didn't like either MIB movie.

I don't have any actor whose movies I absolutely must see, but there are some who raise the likelihood I'll see it. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp for instance. Certain directors and screenwriters are more effective though.

Have there even been movies since the 90s began without at least one of those 3? I think Jackson has the #1 spot on the list of most movie appearances int he last 20 years. And that's no joke.

Rumor has it Walken goes crazy when he's not working on a project, so he constantly has a movie in production...which is how we end up with crap like Balls of Fury.

See now here's where I think we need a distinction. There is a difference between a movie which has [said actor] and in it and a [said actor] movie.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a movie that features Nicholas Cage, Knowing is a Nick Cage movie.

Must Avoid:
Will Ferrell or any directly supporting actors in any of his comedies
John Travolta
anyone who isn't Janes Franco who was in Pineapple Express
Janeane Garofalo

I don't straight hate many actors but I hate terrible retarded comedies and the actors that basically get typecast by them

Must see:
Tommy Lee Jones
Jack Nicholson
Robert De Niro
Sean Connery
Daniel Day Lewis
Christopher Walken

Jack Black
Liam Neeson
Morgan Freeman

Actors I don't think are that great but somehow usually end up in good movies:
Will Smith
Christian Bale
Keanu Reeves
Ben Stiller

Hit-and-miss:
Tom Cruise
Tom Hanks
Jim Carrey
Nicholas Cage
Vin Diesel
Will Ferrel
Adam Sandler (everything recent has been a miss)

Must avoid:
Dane Cook (except for Waiting)
Ashton Kutcher
Sandra Bullock
Some other romantic-comedy-only actors/actresses that I know I'm forgetting

yeah it's kind of mindblowing that it's actually good.

Oh I forgot, He's good in Adaptation., despite how annoyingly masturbatory of Charlie Kaufman that film is. Con Air and The Rock are fun.

are you counting Paul Rudd as directly supporting Ferrell? Come now, Rudd is in a league of his own apart from those guys.

Danny McBride is great as well.

I think that should be categorized more as:

Tom Hanks

1992-2002: 95% lean towards "Absolutely Don't Miss"
pre 1992 and 2003-present: hit-and-miss with unfortunately more "miss" in the mix in the latter years.

You could probably do that with several actors, but within a 10 year period, I haven't seen many other actors put out more quality movies.

An actor that hasn't been mentioned yet that is usually a must-see for me: Russel Crowe.

A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man are two of my favs of all time.

Too bad he's a douche irl

The ONLY one on that list that I would reconsider is A Few Good Men; and he had a hell of a lot of help in that movie.
