I move back to Raleigh in July... but I'd play, as long as I get to play some pickup first.

Also, I know in some leagues they provide the goalie with the equipment. I could play if that is the case. That is all I ever played when I did the inline tourneys in the summers and I imagine I could adapt to ice pretty easily.

Count me in, if you people are for real. I played for about 6 years between middle and high school. I can skate decent, but my stick skills and shot suck hahha. If you're serious, I say try to get everyone together for one stick and puck session, then move it to pickup.

I might have to look into that beginner stuff. I can skate, but I've never played hockey (on ice anyway, or at any sort of competitive level).

okay join if you're interested in playing ice hockey in raleigh. i don't mean you think it sounds cool even though you've never played hockey. i mean you own or are legitimately willing to buy a full set of pads and play some fucking adult league hockey.

I don't know any of you guys but I joined as well. I'm already on 2 teams at the iceplex so it'll depend on what rink and league ya'll plan on playing in and if there are any conflicts. Otherwise, I can always play more hockey!

^^ i didn't mean it like that. as far as i'm concerned people who have never played are welcome, i just want to get a real idea of how many people are interested, and that doesn't include people who read the thread and think "oh yeah hey sounds fun lol".

I'd prefer Upper C or B/C but I'll do as low as Intermediate C. Anything lower than that probably wouldn't be enjoyable. It's like $245 per person apparently at IcePlex...

so for those that currently play in raleigh: where's the best pickup to get back into it? preferably w/ an average age over 16.

Here is the schedule for RecZone (good location because its just inside the beltine off Wake Forest Rd.)
http://www.reczone.net/servlets/lcalendar?League=RecZone&Team=579&Team=580&DisplayList=24

The IcePlex has the Thursday night C-league pick-up session but it fills very fast because of the class before it.

IceHouse in Cary is closed for May (repairs and crap)
IceHouse in Garner schedule is here:
http://www.icehouserinks.com/images/CALENDAR%20MAY.pdf

My league has no games this weekend so I am definitely up for a session.

We should all do a stick and puck.

I might not be able to join right away, got to see how school goes first, but I will in a season or two. I freakin' miss ice hockey.

It's open nets and all you need is a stick, helmet, and skates.

It's not a game or anything, but just skatin' around on your own.

Keep in mind that most stick and puck sessions become pick-up games about halfway through. I usually just where all my gear (except maybe no elbow & shoulder pads) just because I've taken far too many errant shots or collisions with others not paying attention.

You also have to wear gloves for S&P, and I'd recommend shins and elbows.

The best pickups I've been to over the past few years are Friday lunchtime at Cary or RecZone. Cary is closed right now, though, so RZ is probably pretty crowded. I've generally stopped going to pickups because they create bad habits for goalies, but if everyone is going to show up for one I'll go.

Anyway, if I can fit it in my schedule I'd be glad to play, but like I said I'm already playing Monday/Tuesday/Thursday and you'd practically have to pay me to play in an IcePlex league because of the headaches with Russ and then the headaches with the hugeass rink.

cary ice house is always packed for stick and puck, especially with little kids who always get in your way... do iceplex or rec zone for anyone going out for their first time

1) Stick and puck blows. All ages are allowed and they sometimes don't like it when you get a scrimmage going.

2) Cary Icehouse is out of commission until the end of the month because they are replacing their boards and ice. They have pickup from 11:15 AM -12:45 PM every Friday and 10:15 to 11:45 on Saturday nights. I usually go every Friday. Both sessions would get too packed for all of you guys to show up. The skill level is anywhere from A to C but you have a lot of A/B players.

3) Garner Icehouse has pickups every Friday night. I've never been but I imagine they would be decent pickups. I think they also have pickups every other Sunday night but I've never been.

3) RecZone has lots of pickups, however, the Friday afternoon, Friday night and Saturday night are usually too packed for all of us to show up. Good competition too. They also have pickups on Monday nights (9:30-11:00), Wednesday nights (9:30-11:00) and Thursday afternoons (~11:45-1:15). Those pickups are spotty and you probably won't have a goalie.

4) Iceplex sucks for pickups. They have a pickup from ~4:30 am to 6:30 am on Friday mornings. Apparently it's a good pickup but it's at a shit time.

5) The Factory at Wake Forest has pickups every Sunday night at 9:00 - 10:30. They always have a decent showing but not too crowded. You won't see many 'A' guys because we have games during that time on Sunday night. I plan on going up there this weekend because we don't have a game this Sunday.

6) Cary/Garner Icehouse, Factory and Reczone leagues (not sure about Iceplex) all just started. You probably won't be able to join a league until September. Now is the perfect time to get on the ice and practice for the upcoming season.

Sorry if this is repeat info. That is all folks.

So I went and played pick-up out here right after work for an hour yesterday. A little rough at first with the stick handling and my skates need sharpening BAD, but after about 10 minutes it felt like I never stopped playing...

Question... what level do you guys feel you are? Like, beginner, intermediate, advanced? Also what positions do we have? I always played as a wing but I wouldn't be opposed to playing defense if we don't have guys who feel as comfortable skating backwards/transitioning...

i guess i would say that i'm advanced, i'm not sure. i played from 4th grade through 11th grade, but just in house leagues and for my hs team. i wasn't particularly good, but i wasn't bad either. i would describe my proficiency as "fluid", and by that i mean i don't have to focus on staying up on my skates or look down to handle a puck (although i expect stickhandling to be very rusty).

i played defense until hs, when i decided i wasn't big enough to play there anymore. i'd rather pick back up at defense though, especially, like you said, if people aren't comfortable skating backwards.

When I was 17 I would have said I was advanced, fwiw, but now its more like the middle of intermediate/advanced. I literally hadn't skated in 7 years before yesterday...

I'm going to do this in the fall/winter with or without you people but I'd rather do it, obviously, with people I at least am acquaintances with... even if just online.

ditto.

and yeah, i don't really consider myself an "advanced" hockey player, but from what i remember of catching adult league games before practice and playing adult pickup, "advanced" is a pretty kind assessment as far as that hierarchy goes.

I'm definitely down to start a team but it would depend on what level of team we started. I don't think the people in charge would want me to play 'C'.

Who can go to pickup on Sunday night at the Factory?

You get A LOT of 17-18 year old kids who just want to hog and play with their friends. It can blow sometimes.
