oh well if Troy did it then clearly ANY school can do it Alabama generally has a lot more football talent than NC does with less FBS teams chasing after them than in NC. And are you really trying to compare UCONN to App State? UCONN's basketball coach probably makes more in a year than App's entire athletics budget.

i dont care if a half drunk retard was at QB that game. That state team was horrific, and app lost 23-10

NC and Tennessee has plenty of football talent. And FBS schools recruit regionally and nationally.

What does UConn's basketball coach have to do with football? Their football budget is like 4x that of APP, but when they came into FBS it wasn't much bigger than App's

NC has plenty of talent sure, but not as much as Alabama (where Troy is) and there are already 5 FBS schools recruiting that talent (compared to 2 in Alabama) , not to mention schools that recruit nationally like Notre Dame or Penn State coming here. The point is, that NC's football talent is already picked over so there aren't many FBS caliber players left for App to get, and App obviously isn't going to be recruiting much beyond our borders.

are you really that obtuse? UCONN's Athletics Department has resources that dwarf App's, regardless of whatever made up statistics you're trying to provide. They have the resources to pump money into their football program because they are a huge university and App isn't so it doesn't.

Besides Troy (since we're talking about entering the league) Alabama has 3 FBS Schools, Auburn, Alabama, and UAB.

Not sure why you assume Alabama has so much more talent than us, but it seems pretty equal to me. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/draft-history-graphic.htm

NC Also has double the population.
FBS Schools per capita: http://biged561.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/10321370/10967653

App already recruits heavily in East Tennessee, so I don't know why you think they won't be "recruiting much beyond our borders" teams like Notre Dame and Penn State recruit every state, so that would have no effect.

I got Uconn's budgets from here http://web.uconn.edu/paac/ar0506.html, in 2001 the football budget was 4.1 million, that was the year after they joined the FBS. It was probably smaller before.

App's athletics budget is 11 million, Can't find the football budget but I'm going to assume it's a fair chunk.

because i've read numerous articles on Rivals and Scout about how Alabama is one of the most talent rich states for football behind Texas, Florida and California.

oh so you're telling me that UCONN's football budget 8 years ago was more than a 1/3 of App's entire athletics budget LAST YEAR and that means App would be successful in FBS? Sounds solid to me

8 years ago compared to last year isn't a major difference in dollar value, the growth is a result of moving to FBS. This growth would happen to any school moving to FBS.

App would be successful in FBS because they are right now a fairly good team.

I don't see how they're that much better than when we beat them a couple years ago. They might do OK in a shitty conference like the MEAC, but you put them in any BCS conference or the WAC, Mountain West or CUSA even and they'd have a losing record for sure.

armorfrsleep, how many ASU games have you watched in the last 3 years since the NC State game? My guess is not many. I therefore understand how you cant see how they're that much better than when NCSU beat them a couple years ago.

the answer is not many, since very few are televised and I have no reason to go to Boone to see a team I don't really care about. But I do know that the year we beat them they won a National Championship and last year they did not. They don't suck, but a lot of you don't seem to realize that a huge talent gap exists between FCS and FBS, and while a BCS conference team may occasionally lose to a FCS team that DOES NOT mean that they could compete regularly with FBS teams.

Corey Lynch also went pro, to the Bengals. He was the guy who blocked the kick against Michigan to win it. He had a big game against the Jets this past year when he picked off Brett Farve but eventually got hurt a few games later I think.

LOL sarah I had no idea you posted on here.

It's Justin btw, congrats on graduating and all that fun stuff.

I dunno how this game will turn out, living in Greenville for the past years I can say ECU generally shows up for home games. And I'm sure that they will be pumped up for a big in-state game, it will be a big deal for them. We'll see how it pans out. I've got season tickets so if you make it down here for the game which I'm sure you will you should stop by the fams tailgate. Glad to see you've been doing good!

Haha sorry I had to do research since you have no pics. I'll be there for sure... and you remember ECU was my first college so I know how it rolls down there. The semester I was there was rowdy in the stands but I am pretty sure they won like 3 games that year.

^I don't really think so. He's the only one that said anything about BCS. They said App could do fine in FBS, then he switched it to BCS, but nobody said that.

We all know (I think?) they wouldn't win more than a game or two if they were in a BCS conference (which would be the 1-AA team they schedule, and maybe they get lucky against a Duke or Washington). But, if they were in FBS, and in one of the non-BCS conferences, they could probably pull out a few more. And they might not be great, but they would be ok for that conference.

^did you even bother to read my posts man? what you're saying is pretty much a carbon copy of what I've been saying. I think they MIGHT do OK in a terrible FBS conference (like the MEAC), but assuming they would be successful in the FBS is a bit of stretch. I'm not really sure what exactly you're taking issue with.

i mean yeah, but it was yesterday, i didn't feel like re-reading them. i was just pointing out that if anybody said they'd be ok in 1A and you disagreed, you were the only one that brought BCS conferences up. I seriously doubt they would be going into a BCS conference (if they do go 1A ever) so they'd probably do ok.

so yeah, i mean i agree, but nobody really said anything about BCS conferences for you to disagree about. but whatever, like i said, women or idiots, and ECU should still win, even though i don't want them to.

Wait didnt they back out of playing us b/c douchebag Fowler pissed off the Terry Holland at ECU?? It was something about, and im paraphrasing here-that Fowler was not living up to a verbal agreement him and Holland made on teh home/away series between State/ECU.

The past few times Ive gone to that game in Greenville against ECU, I always had a good time and I was mad as hell the last time we lost there, b/c my buds rubbed it in atleast until we beat them on national tv in Carter Finley last season, HAHA.

GO PACK!

As an App grad, I agree that we would suffer in any real conference. In fact, we will struggle to get into the championship game this season. But didn't ECU lose most of their starters? I don't keep up with them, but as a Pack fan, I hate them almost as much as UNC.

again, you didn't read my posts very carefully, I made one comment about how they would be terrible in a BCS conference or the other good conferences in the FBS (like the WAC, MWC and CUSA) and you're making it out to be my whole argument.

the other thing is that APP won't ever be able to "sneak up" on anyone for at least another 50 years (until all the people who saw the michigan game are dead). EZU will be pump'd for this game and will not overlook the hillbillies.

they should call this "The Moonshine Bowl"

yeah, if VT doesn't have a great year we'll never hear the end of "the ACC is garbage" talk, which will begin pretty early in the season if they don't put up a respectable showing against Bama (not that our conference wouldn't deserve it). But that just means we have to pick up the slack and kick ass to salvage our conference's reputation.

I like this rationale:

Quote :
"while I like App more than ECU in general, the only football smack talk I've had to hear from ECU in the last few years was for like 2 games last year after they beat VT and WVU...then once they lost, they kind of shut up

on the other hand, App fans all across AM radio have been calling them definitively the best football team in North Carolina (some even claiming to be the best team in both the Carolinas) for years...apparently winning D2 titles means you're the best, despite losing to one of NC State's worst teams in years

I wouldn't mind ECU winning so YET ANOTHER D1-A school from North Carolina beats the Mountaineers"

So, I don't know who I will pull for, likely App.

^^Are you serious? ECU fans never cease to brag about an upset win, and are never without an excuse for a loss. It seems like every year they make grand predictions of busting into the BCS, not to mention moving up to a major conference. Most App fans thought they would be competitive but didn't predict a solid win over NC State, and it takes little more than a reminder of that game to put them in their place.

Even though I pulled for App against the pups from Michigan, its NOT even going to be close in this one, ECU by four touchdowns. THe fans in Dowdy Ficklen are so ready for football especially after having so many pieces of the puzzle back this season, and after getting up as high as 15th in teh country last season...I think ECU, State, TCU and Boise are all going to be sleepers this season.

No. the Cliff's notes are that Holland wanted to move the game without anyone thinking he wanted to move the game because that would cheese off all the ECU fans.

One week from today!

Still a little worried about Armanti Edwards. His 30 stitches were removed last week but he still hasn't practiced. Good thing is, back up QB Travaris Cadet, a junior transfer from Toledo, has been looking good as well as ASU's defense. AppSt is definitely going to have to play at 100% to pull this win off, looking forward to it!

UConn was always able to pump money in to the football program at any time (post 1990 or so) they wanted. It was never a question of fitting it in to the budget. It was trying to get the state to pay for a downtown Hartford stadium or pay for infrastructure to build it closer to campus.

Comparing the resources of UConn to App State is absurd in any sense. One is an afterthought in its own state and one if one of the Top 25-30 public universities in the country and the top in its region. UConn's total endowment is nearly six times that of App State. They have a worldwide brand name (thanks to bball) and the state is continuously pumping money in to the school.

Quote :
"This growth would happen to any school moving to FBS."

That isn't close to true. UConn would have never gone 1-A (FBS) without assurances it would join a BCS conference. App would have NO chance at that. Not only that, but the resources that were available guaranteed a state-of-the-art stadium and ability to pay top dollar for the head coach and coaching staff.

I don't see where you're going with this. Do you have the revenue data from UofB, who would be a more similar comparison for a school like App...

I can't believe no one corrected armorfrsleep on calling the MEAC an FBS conference. They are in the FCS with App and the Southern Conference. The Sun Belt Conference is the terrible FBS conference that he should have used as an example.

^^^^ Where I was going is that App could be competitive in the FBS, at least right now.

It's not like it will ever happen, since Boone doesn't have the infrastructure required to meet current FBS standards, and the geography means they probably never will.
