"Look, I'm a 24-year old chain-smoking alcoholic grad student, and I should be too old for such things, but when I found out that there was such a thing as a LEGO store -- and that such a thing existed in Raleigh -- I pretty much came in my pants.

It's the only time in my life (other than special events) that I've had to wait in line to get into a retail store because it was so crowded. Economic recession be damned, people were buying some fucking LEGO's.

I blew a month's entertainment budget (fortunately separate from the booze budget) while there. Lesser men would be ashamed, but I walked around that place grinning like it was the first time I got to buy something from an ABC store.

Commence with mocking me, but I know that some of you just got your minds blown by this news."

i wish the store was bigger. they don't have the build-your-own lego man thing either. they said they were getting that later this year though. i wish they had a bigger technic section.

but still, i am not ungrateful for our new lego store and will cherish it always. lego

I have hundreds of thousands of Lego's in my parent's attic. My son is too young to appreciate them, so I have not gotten them out in probably 15 years.

I actually got a postcard about the store opening.

Depends....
I'm sure many lego fans simply make whatever is in the assembly instructions and keep it assembled for years to collect dust. I personally find that boring -- if I want to build a model, I'll buy a real (non-lego) model kit. I could generally care less about some lego design that came with the box, and instead prefer to make complex unique lego creations. From a relatively young age, I was making knight-rider cars, "transformers", magic tricks, and other functional things for which there were no instructions or specially-designed pieces.

I tend to dislike the trend that lego has suffered over the last couple decades -- that they make a specific shaped piece that has no relation to regular legos, then they slap a couple bumps on it and call it a lego. That takes the creativity right out of it.

Quote :
"lego's were too expensive for me"
They have always been too expensive. That's their only flaw.
I remember hearing stories of grown men getting busting upon repeatedly shoplifting legos....

the lego creator thing you can download, build on the computer, then order the pieces is pretty cool. the last couple i've bought have been ones that fans made.

Do they get paid? If I made designs and people bought them, could I get paid?

not sure. they might have won some prize money or something.

one day when i have gobs of time i'm gonna make one of the house i grew up in then order the parts. i have the floor plans (dad is an architect). i'll also start playing the sims again. i saw a preview thing for sims 3 in target and a little part of me died inside. i haven't played in forever. i love that game. you can't just sit down and play for 30 mins - hour though. you need like 5hrs at a time. i don't have that anymore.

stupid work/adulthood

I still have my huge plastic box full of Legos. Every once in a while, I'll break it out and make huge cities out of legos.

I may stop by the Lego store this weekend

^I played Sims 2: Apartment Life for 3 hours last night. Can't wait for Sims 3

Hah yeah I got twins taken away once... It's also fun to just stick them in a room and let them starve. Or a pool with no ladder!

So buying the new Sims.

Oh the fireplace also works especially well with paintings near it. Once I covered the entire room with rugs and paintings.. and thus made a ridiculous inferno for my Sim. muahaha

I liked dressing them up, too Did you guys design what your Sims looked like? After making about 10+ characters I realized all of my girls looked the same, just with different hair colors. Same with the guys

Goddamnit Legos are awesome. I still have the gas station (with car wash), the Black Knights Castle, the fire department, the police station, the Technics motorcycle/dirtbike (with moving pistons)... other shit that I'm forgetting, and a few giant rubbermaid containers full of misc. pieces.

At least I hope they are still in my closet back at home.

Yup, and they swim and swim and swim until their little diamonds are deep red. Then they die. Then you get the gravestone and can have ghosts!

Yeah, for the most part I'm the same way. I'll build the thing according to instructions first, it'll sit around for a bout a week, then I'll disassemble it and put it together with the other cannibalized parts to see what I can do.

I was complaining about this to my roommate on the way into the store. When a kit is 30% one piece, I'm not really getting my money's worth in terms of building pleasure. If I wanted to buy a solid plastic toy, I'd do that.

I really liked the exploriens set growing up, but I never got one

http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?qc=lego/system/space/exploriens

I have the very first train set they came out with as well as the entire most of the UFO set. There are a few that I realize that I'm missing now that I've searched the database:

http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?qc=lego/system/space/ufo

I am pretty much missing 2847,3012, 6901/6902, and 6800/6816. Now I've got to find them and get them

I wanted the Space Robo Series... But only got 1 of them before they discontinued Oh god, not another money pit
