^ You are correct. This thread will do absolutely no good. These are just pet peeves. We can't expect all people to learn something so simple, I guess.

It's also funny you would come in here and say these things don't matter and people who are bothered by ignorance are simply "taking this stuff too seriously." After seeing a couple bad posts, including one of YOURs yesterday morning, I was motivated to make this thread.

the meanings behind symbols can change over time even if the originator of the symbol is dead or no longer exists, other than that you're argument is good.

but whatever. symbols lose meaning when folks stop knee-jerk reacting to them...

i've been wondering what's the ruling on adding the suffix -al to words that end in -ic. for example: symmetrical, acoustical

it seems redundant and is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

another thing that is more of a pet peeve than anything is when people use pressure and force interchangeably. I realize that unless you have an engineering background you wouldn't really understand the difference, but it still sounds retarded, especially when they do it on modern marvels or some other "science" show.

^oooh. now this i don't know. what is the difference?

(my guess is that force is more action oriented, ie-you apply force, pressure is just there....but that is a guess )

Pressure is force per unit area.

p = F/A

You have pressure when you apply a force to an area.

one that i made an error saying all the time, but am now actively trying to correct it (thanks mom! haha i'm getting better...)

error: Her/Him and I are going to the movies.
correct: She/He and I are going to the movies.

I've gotten better at saying "she/he and I" now to the point I notice when others say it incorrectly.

i hate it when people say

Quote :
"if you have issues let Bob or myself know about it"

fuck, that's so not right
it doesn't sound proper
it sounds like you're trying to sound more intelligent than you really are
whats wrong with saying "me"?
no one would ever say "let myself know"
they would say "let me know"
so should they also if adding another person to the list....GAH

One of my bigger peeves these days is that more and more people seem to be using "whom" incorrectly in speech. Even most sticklers probably aren't going to freak out if you say "who" when "whom" would be proper in daily conversation, and if you flip that and say "whomever" when it's not necessary you just kinda sound like a pretentious douchebag.

Also, does anyone still know how to correctly use semicolons? I'm thinking no. Sad.

just a friendly reminder

LOSE = fail to keep or to maintain; cease to have, either physically or in an abstract sense
LOOSE = not compact or dense in structure or arrangement

there have been way too many offenders on TWW lately

Their was a lot more people there last night versus last year. I parked at some tire service place off of hillsborough st. It was across from shopping center. I can't remember the name of it.

I saw a few residences that were charging $10 to park in there yard. If lived around Franklin St., I would be doing the same thing.

I wonder what the Chapel Hill Town Council will thing about the attendance increase. I bet they will try and check IDs next year.

People who rant about grammar in forums are just trying to feel smart because they don't have anything clever or interesting to say.

I'm certainly trying to make up for the fact that I have nothing clever or interesting to say. I don't have any friends either. I also think I'm better than everyone else because I have a basic knowledge of the English language.

This isn't 4chan, this is a college message board. There is a difference. (although most times you really can't tell)

really though, unless it's very consistently (as in they miss-use it all the time) in error
it's not a big deal

You sound like a massively condescending fuckface, unless you have never made that grammar error yourself. which i extremely doubt.

though it is endlessly amusing to watch you get so uptight about it that not only do you feel the need to make a thread about it but you also feel the urge to keep it updated to let all of us know every time someone makes a minor grammar error. (if you weren't uptight about it you would have never made this thread)

with the 30 minute window for editing often users will post and leave and come back finding their error later (30 minute timer expired) and will be unable to correct the mistake.

but by all means do continue

you entertain me so
