page 2 says 2 great teams

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but obviously the press release is going to call both of the schools great programs. You think they're going to publicize this game as "a meeting between two mediocre programs"? What sense would that make?

not really, I'm just pointing out that they weren't going to saying anything but positive stuff about the programs when they are announcing the game. Since the point of putting out a press release about the game is to build up hype/anticipation, why would you try to degrade or diminish either of the schools who are participating?

i don't know squat about the history of the chic-fil-a bowl, but why would they choose two "un-great" teams?

My point is, they see potential in our program to be able to compete with a team like Tenessee in the spotlight. That to me is a great sign of advancement in our program.

I don't think you can seriously consider us a "great" program by any stretch of the imagination. Great programs have won at least 1 National Championship. I think we're on our way to becoming a consistently good program, but we're a long way from being great. But to answer your question, they would choose at least 1 "un-great" team because there are only a few programs you could seriously consider great in the ACC (and this game is an ACC-SEC matchup) and they can't have just those schools play every year. They're having UNC play in it in a year or two, and I don't think you could consider them great either.

I'll tell you what would be a great sign of advancement in our program: winning 9+ games in a season. I think looking at media attention as a sign of advancing a program is extremely problematic, do I even have to name all the preseason top 25 teams who have ended up being terrible the past couple of seasons?

I don't consider ourselves a great program right now, but i feel that at the pace we're going, by the time 2012 rolls around we'll be able to put up a good fight against any team (with the exception of USC and Florida i guess).

also, thanks for pointing out the background behind the matchup, i didn't know it was SEC vs ACC. that clears things up and sobers the mood a touch.

while i hate to jinx ourselves, i think this is within reach this season.

EDIT: when i say great, i don't necessarily mean champions or anything of the sort. I use that term to describe a team that has the respect of it's opponents, is consistently in the top 25, and has a reputation around the nation.
