Durbin cashed out during big stock collapse WASHINGTON | Asset sales came after meeting with Fed, Treasury chiefs
Quote : | "As U.S. stock markets plummeted last September, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin, sold more than $115,000 worth of stocks and mutual-fund shares and used much of the money to invest in Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
The Illinois senator's 2008 financial disclosure statement shows he sold mutual-fund shares worth $42,696 on Sept. 19, the day after then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke urged congressional leaders in a closed meeting to craft legislation to help financially troubled banks. The same day, he bought $43,562 worth of Berkshire Hathaway's Class B stock, the disclosure shows.
Altogether, Durbin sold investments worth $116,000 in September. By Oct. 2, he had invested $98,046 in Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway, the form shows." |

^ Yep. And that's the point of this thread--investigations of corrupt Democrats are being held up in Congress.
Republicans may gain ethics issue
Quote : | "The revelation that Democratic appropriations kingpins may face an ethics investigation of their campaign donations moves Republicans closer to gaining a corruption issue in 2010.
Republicans know well how lapses in ethical standards can sink a political party. They lost control of the House in the 2006 midterm election, succumbing in part to accusations from Democrats that the GOP had produced a 'culture of corruption' in which lobbyists showered gifts on lawmakers in exchange for government contracts and other legislative favors.
The Democratic chairman and senior Republican on the House ethics committee dropped their political bomb Thursday night, announcing that the panel is reviewing the practice of lawmakers steering money and contracts to favored companies, and then receiving campaign contributions in return for the 'earmarks.'
The announcement came months after the Justice Department began a criminal investigation of the matter and a repetition of House votes on Republican motions — all of them defeated — calling for an ethics probe of lawmakers who engage in what is often called a 'pay-to-play' system for funneling federal dollars to select companies and projects.
The review could turn into a full-blown ethics investigation later, with the potential for scathing reports that could become campaign fodder." |

republicans probably ought to be careful how hard they push, though. I'm sure there are plenty of pay-to-play congressmen with R's beside their name... 6/16/2009 7:33:38 PM |

^ Maybe so, but according to The Center for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington, of the elected Washington representatives being examined, 12 are Democrats and four are Republicans.
These numbers don't look good for either party. But they look worse for Democrats--particularly if it is shown that investigations are being unnecessarily delayed or otherwise obstructed. 6/17/2009 1:00:42 AM |

Latest departure renews retirement worries 1/25/10

Democrats Risk Losing Obama's Old Senate Seat Jan. 25, 2010
Quote : | "What could be worse for the White House and the Democrats than losing Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in Massachusetts? How about losing President Obama's old Senate seat in Illinois?
Many observers say that could happen next November, especially with Republicans likely to nominate five-term Congressman Mark Kirk, a moderate, in next Tuesday's Illinois primary." |
Quote : | "'The Democratic field is, to say the least, unimpressive,' said DePaul political scientist Michael Mezey, who contends all three would have a tough time beating Republican Kirk." |

Immigration Debate Worries Democratic Governors July 12, 2010
Quote : | "The Democratic governors expressed deep concern to the White House over the weekend about the political impact of the Justice Department's lawsuit, the New York Times reports. They did so at a meeting in Boston, where governors were convened for the National Governors Association's annual summer meeting.
'Universally the governors are saying, "We've got to talk about jobs," Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, told the Times. 'And all of a sudden we have immigration going on.'
He added: 'It is such a toxic subject, such an important time for Democrats.'" |
