I won't claim to have never pirated a tv show, but Futurama is one I refuse to steal.

I kinda wish people would actually tune in to Comedy Central tonight, this show deserves good ratings.

Hell, when the DVD movies came out on tv I watched them again just to show support.

Second was better simply for the inclusion of Zapp Branagan.

Nice callback on the map of the solar system by including "Urectum".

I was expecting Bender to be a robot copy at the end of the first episode.

Ending of the second episode was disappointing, but I still liked both eps.

It makes me happy to think that there's another episode coming next week. I guess I got used to having to wait months and months between the new DVD movies.

The 30-minute format helps the stories work so much better than the movie-that-can-be-cut-into-episodes format.

Considering that episode was written, recorded, and animated many months ago it was surprisingly topical.

"You mean it's a phone too?"

I think I'm with scm011 on this one.

I'll admit that I thought it was hilarious. I'll admit that Apple had every one of those jokes coming.
However, it didn't really feel like a Futurama episode. It was like someone took their own joke and wrapped the Futurama characters around it, sort of like when web-comics play a joke and switch comics for a day.

Futurama does enjoy poking at the cultural references of our time, but its typically religated to a one-liner that's quick and poignent. This time, they spent an entire episode harping on a joke that would have been over in the first 5 minutes in a retro episode. Then the plug with Susan Boyle just seemed too obscure for Futurama. It was more of a South Park thing, though would have been handled the week-of in that show.

-------

In short, it was funny and utilized the Futurama characters properly, but it really didn't feel like a Futurama episode.

See:
-Titanic episode (A Flight to Remember)
-Beck episode (Bendin in the Wind)
-Star Trek episode (Where No Fan Has Gone Before)
-Iron Chef episode (The 30% Iron Chef)

I can understand why you'd consider the iPhone and Apple to be a current-events cultural reference, but the gadget-hungry mobs and social media themes (that the episode was really about) will be around for a long time.

That said, I wasn't crazy about the Susan Boyle reference, but it fit into the plot well enough to not be a Family Guy joke.

^I understand your point. I guess the difference for me was that the episodes that you listed are more like allegories. This episode was more like harping on the same joke for the entire episode.

Its definitely a thin line. I'll still maintain that it felt more like bending the Futurama cast around a concept than an actual Futurama episode.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I see your point.

Last night's episode could have easily been a Simpsons episode. There were some nice future tweaks to it, but for the most part it could have been "Homer and Bart compete for Twitter followers." In fact, the whole iPod fanboyism has already been covered before in the subplot of Mypods and Boomsticks... (Simpsons did it!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mypods_and_Boomsticks
Still, I enjoyed last night's ep.

Looks like next week's episode (Proposition Infinity) will be better. It's covering the current events story of Prop 8, but should be adding enough future stuff to it that it won't feel like it could be a reskinned Simpsons episode.

Not to mention it looks to be a Bender-heavy episode.

Isn't that enough to get you completely ostracized in the artistic type community?

My wife was able to see the new episode because she was someplace that had cable. She didn't like it and her synopsis did make the episode sound weak. Used to be our favorite show, but we both feel like the series completely lost its way starting with the first movie.

I may get around to seeing this episode so I can make my own call. Not planning on seeing the last 3 movies though.

I've liked them so far.

They don't have a lot of the spark that the older ones did, but I was entertained perhaps moreso than usual, but that could be because [new].

Plenty of episodes seem to focus mainly on a single joke or issue, "Fry and the Slurm Factory" for example.

That's not a single joke. That's an 'allegory' of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Look up the definition if you are confused.

For example, "Fry and the Slurm Factory" is more like "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Its an allegory.
This last episode was more like listening to Jeff Foxworthy doing a "You might be a redneck" routine. Its just a bunch of jokes on a similar topic without much direction.

But whatever. Even if the quality degrades a bit from the previous seasons, I'm hoping it doesn't swan-dive like the travesty that Family Guy has become.

Yeah I'm certainly aware of what an allegory is, but I still don't think the slurm episode was any better executed than the latest one.
