Eh, scares is a strong word. It looks a little rough south of NCCU though... If you say I don't know what a real ghetto looks like, you're probably right.

"I've been going to the ABSOLUTE SHITTIEST areas of Durham from an early age and have yet to have a problem my son. Detroit is absolutely no joke though and it makes Durham look like a little girl's tea party.

Also note that after having lived in Durham and Raleigh at one time or another for most of my life, I can safely say that Durham is a FAR better place to live. It's a much nicer place and I can't figure out where it is that these shit talking idiots are going in Durham. Is it that they only go to the "ghetto" parts of Durham when they go there?

Why in the hell would you go to the shittiest parts of Durham when you go there? I'm just not understanding why all you're seeing in Durham is ghetto, especially when the "ghetto" (And if you think Durham's a ghetto, you've never actually seen one) isn't really near any of the major attractions in Durham. The majority of Durham is extremely nice and there's nothing to do in the shitty parts really besides purchasing crack cocaine, so why are you idiots even venturing out into those areas?

hahahahaha. he raises some good points. and someone was comparing detroit with durham? wow.

I certainly wouldn't put Durham in a "best places to live" list but it's not the shithole some of you ignorant fucks make it out to be. Sure it has some less than desirable areas in it (what city doesn't?) but it's also got plenty of nice areas, some great restaurants/bars and tons of stuff to do. I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people talking shit about Durham have either never been there or only been once or twice.

i think based on the definition the article used:

Quote :
"thrift-conscious approach: We looked for affordable communities that have strong economies and plenty of fun things to do."

i think it fits. i mean is it one of the best places overall to live? no, but it isn't horrible and i think it fits with the article.

Clearly comparing Detroit with Durham my sons. I can add about 38 other cities to that list if it appeases the sons.

...and it only took you two pages to catch on. My point is those criteria are garbage. You must be one of those artsy types that goes on feeling and what not. I can't exactly determine what "lots of fun things to do means"...and what qualifies as affordable? See my point? nope, well then go straight to racism because that's always the easy thing to do.

Raleigh sucks. I lived in durham for 8 years and chapel hill for 9. Prefer CH but Durham kicks ass compared to raleigh. You guys can go back to your culdesacs in cary.

this STILL probably isn't good enough, but i'm just saying. it was in the article. and mentions crime, schools, etc. at least a LITTLE bit.

but whatev. oh and no i'm not artsy and don't live in durham. but i am a crackhead, so that helps.

Durham might be the 5th best city in the Triangle.

If there are only 4 other cities that are better to live in the entire US then our country is an absolute shithole.

I used to be a hater too, but durham ain't so bad. Most of y'all talking shit have never been anywhere in durham that wasn't I-40 or very close to it.

After living here a year, there are some things that are worse than raleigh, and some things that are better. All in all, it's a wash.

i like durham, i think it has character
only parts of the city are "unsafe" and it is pretty easy to just stay away from those areas.

i also realize that a lot of what i like about durham (food, music, community, local shops) is not everyone's cup of tea.

Durham's new slogan:

Durham: There's a good chance you won't get stabbed in the neck with scissors the way that one lady did.

i've been to durham only a few times and it really wasn't that bad. of course i continue to sign on to the anti-durham rhetoric that takes place.

i can safely say that 90% of the people who talk about how bad durham is these days and how dangerous it is haven't actually been and just know that a lot of black people live there. sadly, to a lot of middle class whites any place blacks live is the ghetto.

there are some nice areas past brentwood off capital and some nice areas near the walnut creek area that are black dominated neighborhoods but passerbys feel unsafe and refer to it as the ghetto.

The thing I hated about Durham is that it was almost impossible to get to a lot of places without cutting through some sketchy areas or going way out of your way. I dunno...Try cutting across the heart of Durham to get from I-40 to I-85 without going all the way to Miami Blvd sometime. I mean, I love when people yell "WTF YOU WANT" every time I pull up to a stop sign as much as anyone, but eventually it gets old. You just don't have that problem in Raleigh.

One summer about a decade ago I took a delivery job for a drug company. I used to deliver the drugs to some clinic in the neighborhood just south of 147 at Alston Ave. Shit was sketchy as hell back then. I know things can change, but I can't say that I really care to revisit the neighborhood to see how it has developed. Sure there are pockets in Raleigh that aren't too friendly, but it's pretty unlikely that you're going to take an exit off I-40 or 440 and get dropped off into a neighborhood run by gangs who just hang out on the street all day.

I'm off Crooked Creek, in between Woodcroft and 40. Seems like a nice enough little neighborhood so far; we're actually renting but I wanted a detached house, not a townhouse or apartment. Close to 40 is a plus since I work in Raleigh.

^3 sounds like behind the taco bell on western.

also if you're on i-40 why not just take the exit to i-85 off of i-40 instead of taking i-40 to 281 (miami) to 70 to I-85? to me this seems the only way you'd reach miami; regardless, miami isn't bad at all.

The projects behind Taco Bell today are docile compared to 5-6 years ago. I drive through there a couple of times a week to avoid the stoplight at Kent Rd./Western. The police cracked down hard on all the dealers who were selling all day and all night. Still, the neighborhoods off Alston Ave were much worse than that area has ever been back when I used to go through there.
