So I just hit level 8 with my human fighter yesterday. He wields a longsword and a heavy shield, and he wears scale armor. I need recommendations for a feat.

I've taken Action Surge and Human Perseverance, natch. Also Weapon Focus (heavy blades), Shield Push, and Untamed Berserker Style. That last one is from an issue of Dragon and lets me gain temporary HP equal to my Constitution modifier instead of damaging a second target with Cleave.

Anyway, feat suggestions? Here's what I'm thinking:

Long Jumper: We actually do a lot of jumping in our game, so this could be worthwhile with my huge Athletics bonus.

Shield Defense: An untyped +1 to AC and Reflex until the end of my next turn when I use a power requiring a shield (TIDE OF IRON!).

Timely Respite: A saving throw whenever you take your second wind or total defense? Yes, please!

does that still allow you to chain your cleaves? with like multiple targets, so you can keep hopping to the next one if your cleave kills?

Nah, it's basically just automatic damage to another target adjacent to you. It's great for dropping minions.

What happened here? Some people get confused or just spamming. This is about music bands.

You can't formulate an opinion on a band off of one song. Unless you have listened to several songs by said artist, you can't judge that artist. Many people don't like for strangers, radio or tv to discover their music for them so they will immediately say any of that is trash. How could I watch one episode of LOST and say ABC is an awful network?

If you want to have an opinion listen to these songs first. All of which can be found on youtube.

For Paramore

crush crush crush
thats what you get (radio play)
misery business (radio play-hockey video game)
i can feel the pressure (was used in the nba playoffs)
decode (twilight soundtrack)
fences

For Flyleaf

all around me (huge radio 2008)
so sick (i judged them negatively after hearing this song)
fully alive
sorrow
breathe today
cassie

More of flyleafs music is directly about God while Paramore has religious references in some of their songs.

i dont know who the heck paramore is but i've heard that one terrible flyleaf song that was played ad nauseum on the radios. Would I be correct in assuming that they both belong in the shitheap of pop-punk with the likes of linkin park and other terrible post-emo bands that i hear in the intros to GomTV starcraft tournaments?

After talking it over with my DM this evening, I think I'm going to take Mounted Combat. We both agree that our campaign needs more mounted combat, and my character is at a point in his career where riding a griffon is a pretty good lateral move. With Mounted Combat, I can take advantage of its at-will power: two claw attacks at the end of a charge in addition to the attack my character makes!

Checked out the griffon's stats again this morning. The power I mentioned--Rabid Charger--sounds dope, but the claw attacks are only +10 vs. AC. Yeah, they do 2d6+7 damage, which is respectable, but the attacks are a full -5 behind most of my fighter's attacks.

Still, brutes and artillery tend to have the lowest AC defenses. At this level, they should have AC 20. The griffon would only need to roll a 10 or better, though I assume it'd get the +1 to its attack roll from charging, so maybe 9 or better? Good odds, especially for two attacks.

I like the idea of that, too. You've got the big, beefy, slow monster lumbering in--say an ogre savage or zombie hulk--and here comes the fighter charging in from the sky, harrying that big bastard as his griffon's claws rake through its flesh.

Or, imagine you've got some a sahuagin priest channeling its divine might to hurl massive columns of water at the party from afar. Here comes the fighter on his griffon, soaring over the heads of the sahuagin raiders to pounce on that troublesome sea devil! Dopeness defined.

Could we please stop talking about your dumb, dubiously Christian bands? The thread's focus has obviously shifted to a new topic.

I bit the bullet and took Mounted Combat even though I don't have a mount. I was redoing my magic item wishlist yesterday and found impenetrable barding, which is armor for your mount, on my old list. Clearly, I wanted a mount, so why fight it?

I did retrain from Untamed Berserker Style into Long Jumper. You can't fuck with making a standing jump as if you had a running start, and that +1 bonus to Athletics checks will help offset my armor penalty.

How long before you think you'll get a mount? Also, how do attack rolls work when mounted? Does the mounted skill offset any penalties, or are there still things you have to deal with?

Well, we're about to hit some downtime, and I've got a bit of pocket money, so I could buy a riding horse or maybe a warhorse as soon next session (Sunday).

You share a single set of actions with your mount, which usually means the mount takes the move action and you attack with the standard action, even if you get separated during the encounter and aren't riding.

If you don't have a saddle, you take a -2 penalty to attack rolls, AC, and Reflex defense while mounted. Anyone can ride a mount, even in combat. Mounted Combat only does three things. First and foremost, it lets a qualifying rider (e.g. a friendly rider of at least 7th level in the griffon's case) make use of any powers the creature has with the Mount keyword. Second, it lets the mount use your Acrobatics, Athletics, Endurance, or Stealth check bonuses if yours are better. Last--and this is kinda minor--your mount takes a -2 penalty to its attacks if you don't have Mounted Combat.

hah. I imagine the 2nd edition rules were if you have mounted combat you take a -2 to all attacks and if you dont have mounted combat you explode if you touch a mount.

4th edition is pretty much easy mode. Not that thats a bad thing, the skills system is 1000x better.

the last star wars rpg i played was wizzards d20 (pretty much the same as dnd 3rd edition w/ star wars sounding feats/skils/etc..). Haven't seen the rules for whatever new stuff is out there. Did they fix the imbalance with jedi/sith? It used to be pretty much your campaign was either all force users or all non-force users if you wanted it playable.

The thing i like about the universe is that theres enough established canon that almost any player is going to know a little history, but theres enough timeline span that you can do a story thats really your own.

Yeah, Saga is also by Wizards. It came out before 4E and featured some of the same types of changes to the rules that have made 4E so much fun. Jedi are always going to be powerful characters, but there are a lot more options for all character types. Just reading it, it looks a lot more balanced than the old d20 game.

We finished up a storyline today that had granted my fighter an Artifact as his primary weapon. Now, I can choose for it to permanently take the form of any magic weapon up to level 11. I've had a +2 defensive longsword and a +2 pinning longsword on my wishlist, but level 11 is +3 territory. I want to stick with a longsword, but I'm not sure which way to go with the enchantment.

Finally got to play with my griffon at yesterday's session! I named him Artaxerxes and made up a cool little custom marker for him.

The extra movement is very nice, as is being able to fly. Artaxerxes has a much lower AC than Brynn (my fighter)--18 vs. 25--so I expected he'll be targeted fairly often. The extra attacks from charging were quite useful against two brutes we encountered, but we only had one actual combat encounter. And in that encounter, we were without our cleric, so it was just my fighter and three strikers: a deva avenger, a half-orc rogue, and a gnome sorcerer. Between three effects requiring saves (a charm, a dominate, and ongoing damage), we were pretty well challenged even with the griffon's presence.

I'm really looking forward to spending some of our cash on impenetrable barding, which will make Artaxerxes a less appealing target. Although honestly, if I've already marked the opponent and he goes after my mount, I get to make a badass opportunity attack anyway.

I'll admit I like Flyleaf

But back to the real topic, how long until there's a 4th edition video game? I'm looking forward to trying out the new system, but I've never actually played the PnP game, it's always computer RPGs.

Does anyone here play Evony (formerly known as Civony?) It's a free browser-based MMORTS where you build up cities and train armies and go conquer other dudes. You can join an alliance for more coordinated plundering or just go solo and fuck everyone around you.

So i got a new campaign comin up and im gonna be rollin a bard. The bard dailies are op as hell. Gonna be cool cause i've never played a bard.

SOOOO BACK TO THE OP!!!

I have to choose whether or not to go with ritual casting or alchemy. Its a generic fantasy world and the bad guy is some evil wizzard guy. So what should i choose?
